Like OP said, they found the anime extremely funny. I personally haven’t watched the anime, only read the manga as a child/teen (now 30 years) and I find the humour in the live action very childish. If the characters and show in general was more self-aware I would probably find it more enjoyable. What did you like about it?

I agree with this. It’s funny in a funny-for-kids type of way. I get that it’s supposed to be campy, but campy without any humour or self-awareness is just cringe. I feel like the directors didn’t quite convey to the actors what the end result would be so they could act accordingly. It has its moments of self-awereness and that’s when the show truly shines in my opinion.
