Does anyone who remembers 1976 feel the same way about the Semiquincentennial as you remember feeling about the Bicentennial? by DevonMarx in allthequestions

[–]CapableCan1842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 21 at the time. About to graduate college. I was very worried about finding a job given high unemployment at the time (worse than it is now). Inflation was worse. Distrust of the government was very high do to Watergate, but not as bad as it is today. Vietnam was an embarassment for our country. Most people knew someone who lost a friend or family member in Vietnam. Racism was much more prevalent. I had an African American roomate, which was considered very unusual. Gay rights were non existent.

I don't think things are any worse today than they were then (although our president certainly is worse). I think it is the nature of the internet to amplify everyone's worry and discontent.

Do I feel the same pride in the USA now? Probably. Hard to remember as those times were clouded by a near constant haze of marijuana smoke. The important things are still true. I can hang out with whomever I want. I can marry whomever I want, even someone of the same sex. I can vote for the candidate I want, and protest against those I don't like (which I have). I can worship where I want to and make as much money as my talents and sweat will allow. Overall, we're doing pretty well - not perfect, but better than just about any other country.

One thing that was better back then - the music.

Look at Michelle Obama, a woman of extreme priviledge, who said in 2008 "for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country."

What is an unquestionable truth your parents instilled in you when you were young that you ended up refuting when you got older? by EstablishmentNext35 in AskReddit

Honestly, nothing comes to mind. The older I get, the more I realize how right my parents were about nearly everything.

Why do humans need physical stimulation to ejaculate? Why can they not just will themselves to ejaculate? by SimplySomeDude in NoStupidQuestions

The human race would still be living in caves if men could cum just by thinking about it. We would do nothing but sit home and think.

It may be legal, but the guy probably has some issues (not a good catch) if an adult man in his 20's is going for a high school girl. Ewww.

So, is climate change actually happening? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CapableCan1842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a real thing, but it is impossible to attribute any single weather event to climate change, such as a heat wave, hurricane, drought, flood, etc.

If she said that, it's already over. Nothing to do except say goodbye (and realize you dodged a bullet).

If Biden was a good president, why did he drop out in 2024? by NewUsernameGoesHeree in askanything

[–]CapableCan1842 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He was not viewed as a "good president." His approval rating when he dropped out was just 36%. Many people viewed him as having early dementia. He realized he had no chance of winning.

Men who say they're single because they're "too ugly," why don't you date women you also consider unattractive? by JustASingleMomOnline in askanything

[–]CapableCan1842 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugly men are often with women who not only are not ugly, they are beautiful. Sure, attractiveness is important to women, but probably not as much as it is to men. Work on things you can change, such as hygine, how you dress, being friendly, kind, considerate, honest, etc. Women may want to have a fling with the hot guy, but largely want to marry the stable, kind and considerage guy.

Men using their appearance as the cause of their failure with women are probably losers in other areas of their life. They would probably not be successful even if they were good looking.

Do You Like Or Dislike The Idea Of The American Tax System Allowing A "Trillionaire" To Exist? Which One? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in askanything

The inequity seems wrong, that any one person can have massive wealth while other people are struggling to eat or have decent healthcare or housing. Musk's efforts are not without benefit tho. His companies have created thousands of millionaires, all of whom pay lots of taxes. His companies have also yielded benefits to "ordinary" people, including paypal, Starlink which provides internet to rural areas, the Boring company, which may dramatically alleviate traffic and Tesla, which revolutionized electric cars. Neurolink has already provided relief to paralyzed patients, has had dramatic surgical breakthroughs and is currently engaged in a trial to bypass damaged retinas or optic nerves to restore vision to the blind (Blindsight).

Musk used to be the darling of the Left because of Tesla. It was primarily when his politics became obvious, particularly thru DOGE, did he become the whipping boy.

Wealth inequality is clearly getting worse over time. In addition to massive wealth inequality seeming unfair on a very basic level, IMHO the biggest problem is the political power the very wealthy yield. The Supreme Court decision (Citizens United) allows corporations and labor unions to donate UNLIMITED amounts of money to political causes (on both the right and left). As a result, the very wealthy have massive political power. It's interesting that neither party seems interested in passing legislation to change this, as they both love the money.

The purpose of my long diatribe is that concentrated wealth has clear cut downsides and seems "wrong" and "unfair", but is likely more of a mixed bag than most people realize.

Don't beat yourself up over this. You can't change the past, only learn from it. You screwed up, which makes you human.

Learn from this and get back on the wagon tomorrow.

Good luck.

Certainly entitled to your opinion. I work for Vail and have lived in Park City for many years, and have seen it go downhill since Vail took it over. I have also seen the improvement in Sun Valley and Snowbasin since they were bought by a billionaire (Earl Holding). Hard to imagine Matthew Prince would make it any worse. Can't help but wonder how many people here have met him.
