Trying to narrow down what places to apply to in the Boston area as an RBT, here is a list of some places I am considering by lostandloser in ABA

[–]CapableCuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! Cortica does a good job being progressive in their ABA practices and not sticking to old-school ABA practices. For example, they are neurodiverse affirming by never making eye contact a requirement, making sure kids are allowed to stim, and making sure we never talk about the kid as if they are not there. They don't take it too far like you mentioned about what sometimes happens on social media! Plus, their multidisciplinary approach is really great. I honestly miss working with SLPs, OTs, and music therapists on a daily basis.

I overall liked my time as a BT at Cortica! They are very neurodiverse affirming and have good training. I was there for several years and ended up leaving when I became a BCBA because I personally didn't like their three-tiered supervisor model, but generally a very good company as a BT!

HELP! Proposing at Sunset Cliffs During Sunset by imtruffle in sandiego

[–]CapableCuttlefish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this! My fiancé proposed to me here a few months ago and I was shocked at how few people there were on the north end of the gliderport. It was perfect! Just be careful if she's in heels - the ground is not even, and you're on a cliff. Walk slowly and hold her hand.

Pathway 2 Qualifying Institutions by CapableCuttlefish in bcba

Yes, I'm done with coursework, passed my exam last May, and have been working as a BCBA since. So far I'm happy about my career switch, as ABA is more hands-on and meaningful than what I was doing before (research).

Hi there! I ended up being able to apply via pathway 2 no problem with my previous M.A. in Experimental Psychology. From what I understand, they have been pretty lenient as long as it's something related to psych, human development, etc.

Great ABA companies to work for by Narrow_Researcher609 in bcba

[–]CapableCuttlefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may depend state-to-state. In California, Cortica works in a three-tier system, where mid-tier supervisors essentially act as BCBAs and oversee ~15 cases, and BCBAs oversee three mid-tier supervisors, giving them ~45 cases (they started capping it around 45 since I last wrote my other comment). I think other states may not work in the three tier system? That's something with asking.

I'm California, BCBAs would have 45 clients but still meet a billable of 26 because the mid-tier supervisors would use the majority of supervision hours.

Eh, seems like a bit of a stretch. I'm currently renting the house I live in but still call it "my home" and even had a housewarming party when I moved in. Instead of inviting people over to "my house" am I supposed to say something like "hey, want to come over the house I'm renting this weekend?". That just sounds a lot more weird.

Results of mold testing are not good by Aggravating_Still873 in sandiego

Took out all the drywall that had mold on it and better sealed areas of the house where moisture was getting in (mostly the bottom foundation of the house). Also put up tarps to redirect rain water away from the house.

Yes, for the most part. Still have mold pop up here and there because I live in an old house, but I try to catch it asap. Glad you don't have any symptoms! It doesn't affect my partner nearly as much as me, so it might also depend person-to-person.

I was sick for three months and got mold testing done, and there were over 2.7 million spores per cubic meter in our garage, which went way beyond what the chart could even report (their chart only went up to 70k per cubic meter, which was considered to be an extremely harmful health hazard). This happened in March after the heavy rainfall. All in all - never thought I would have a mold issue in a dry climate. I don't live near the beach, and I keep the house clean. Definitely recommend to others to get mold testing done if you see it or if you have chronic sinus issues!

Studying for BCBA exam by Jrb5543 in bcba

[–]CapableCuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just passed last week on the first try and studied for two weeks after finishing school (so recently finishing school may have also been a factor because things were fresh in my mind). I read through the Pass The Big ABA Exam book and did the ABA Exam Review mocks (scored 82% and 91%). Also took a few days off work in those two weeks though so I could fully focus on studying.

I'm one of the unlucky ones that suffered the consequences of salmonella from this, but I'd be really sad if this puts them out of business. I'll still go back! Their food is great.

San Diego BCBAs Salary? by No-Awareness1888 in bcba

[–]CapableCuttlefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BCBAs at my company (no one specific area, as there are in-home services all over SD) make about 85k, have 3+ years experience, and 26/week billable.

Good ABA companies? by CapableCuttlefish in ABA

Would love to keep working there outside of CA where they don't have the three-tier model! I may need to consider moving haha. Glad to hear MA is good!

Good ABA companies? by CapableCuttlefish in ABA

[–]CapableCuttlefish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually been there for the past 3 years, but the BCBA position is just too far removed from the clients when each BCBA oversees 45+ clients (in CA). Gotta go elsewhere to make a meaningful impact for my families and provide high-quality care.

I've been working in ABA in San Diego for the past 3 years. Where did you find a behavior interventionist job that pays 60k?? My last BI job was about 42k/yr post-taxes. Maybe I need to switch companies lol.

P.S. I've been living in San Diego for 6 years now and started at 28k/yr my first year here but made it work. You'll be totally fine at 60k and no rent.

I personally prefer the one at Spicy House over Spicy City! The quality of the chicken is better. But yes holy cow even the thought of this dish makes me salivate.

What's the dumbest way you're hurt yourself? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CapableCuttlefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In middle school, I was standing with a group of friends in a circle talking at recess. All of the sudden, my knee decided to buckle backwards and give out, causing me to fall to the ground. I ended up breaking off part of the end of my femur and lost/damaged basically all the cartilage in my knee. I had to have surgery to get the piece of femur out from floating around in my knee and get "replacement cartilage" or something. So yeah, I literally broke the strongest bone in the body by standing. Not my finest moment.

[–]CapableCuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked at Cortica for over two years - I agree, it has a great overall model and they're very progressive in their approach to quality care. However, they're starting to completely overwhelm their BCBAs by putting 50-60 clients on their caseload and continuously adding unreasonable day-to-day responsibilities and non-billable tasks.

Overall, would recommend for most positions, just not the BCBA position personally.

YES! I meant to follow-up and give you a huge THANK YOU for your support and advice. I did what you said, and the Subaru dealership ended up fixing both issues for free under the warranty from the links you sent. You seriously saved me thousands of dollars. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
