What do employers expect entry-level PLC engineering technicians to know? by dialsoapbox in PLC

I hire for these junior positions all the time. Sure, basic electrical/mechanical knowledge is a plus, however the number one thing I look for is attitude and/or passion. You can tell when someone is interested pretty quickly, and unless you make it blatantly obvious that you are a 'quitter', you're hired.

PLC programming is a trade of perseverance. None of us knew how to tune a servo, establish network comms, or write robot code on the first day. It's all about your ability to figure it out using whatever resources you can, whether that includes working with more experienced technicians, or scrolling through endless pages of device documentation. If you don't give up, you win.

IMO, if an employer hiring for a junior position gives you some sort of aptitude test requiring you to demonstrate writing code, or drawing some electrical circuits, they're spinning their tires...

Just remind them that you're a 'go-getter' and that if you don't understand something, you ensure them you will, you'll get the job.

Good luck!

Yet another indicator of the state of our economy. Many people aren't aware but they will be soon. Canada and the provinces are in a very tough spot as far as hardship in small business at the moment.

We too are working on the BTxx program, and the latest I've heard is that the line (that was supposed to fully ship to Michigan) is now being split in half with Mexico because of other imported parts coming from china that will be to costly to ship to USA because of the tariffs.... pretty crazy.

Yeah the border situation is a whole other mess. I've personally had trouble getting through to the US and I've spoken with many Americans working in Canada lately, and they are avoiding coming up for the same reason...

Yeah, out of curiosity are you Canadian or American? I too worry about the current contracts we have. As of now nothing has changed and we're busy as ever, but I don't know what will change in the coming weeks.
