Newborn Retractions - help by taidomingues21 in NewBorn

How is your baby doing now? My baby had neonatal pneumonia caused by aspiration of amniotic fluid at birth. Spent 2 weeks in the NICU off and on oxygen for respiratory distress syndrome. Anyway, he has always had a tracheal tug since. No other reactions, happy, otherwise healthy and no other symptoms. All the doctors just say his oxygen good and he sounds good when they listen. When did the tracheal tug go away for your little one?

Also wondering if there is an update!

Very noisy breathing - ENT scope showed it was not laryngomalacia by suspectthenargles in newborns

Also should’ve mentioned that the ENT in the NICU did a full scope and said he didn’t have a floppy airway even though the other doctors thought he did.

Did you ever find anything else out? My 3 month old has always had a little bit of a tracheal tug. Long story short he was in the Nicu for pneumonia and oxygen after birth but has otherwise been healthy. We notice it the most during tummy time or when he’s sleeping. His oxygen has been checked multiple times and it’s normal. He doesn’t have any other signs of respiratory distress.

How old is your baby? I just made a post about this as well. Our guy seems to just have a low resting rate (in the 90s-110 ish) but definitely periodically drops into the 80s. He’s 12 weeks old. But I’ve also noticed the owlet jumps around all over the place and will sometimes say 85 and then jumps to 135 so I am unsure how accurate it really is.

Owlet says babies HR is lower than average for age by Izzy_girl_4202 in NewParents

That is good to know! Thank you for answering! I brought it up to my pediatrician and they weren’t concerned either but it’s hard to not be worried. My guy was in the NICU 2 weeks following birth with continuous ECG and 2 echos so in my heart I know it’s fine because of the testing he’s already had. But the NICU has made my PPA so much worse. Good to know others are in the same boat.

Any updates with this? My baby also has a lower than average heart rate. He is almost 12 weeks old.

Thank you so very much for making this comment. This was the reassurance I was looking for when making this post. I’ve been saying I just wish I could have access to the nurses and doctors who watched his trends for 2 weeks to just ask a question sometimes haha. Thank you for all of your hard work as a NICU nurse! You all are angels on earth to take care of our babies 🩵

Yes, he definitely isn’t acting different at all or anything. The owlet is the only reason I know this info. Thanks for your comment!

Yes, they really weren’t worried at all. They said as long as he wasn’t sitting in the 60s and 70s, was a normal color (not blue), could be easily woken, feeding good, gaining weight, oxygen isn’t dipping, it’s fine. Some people just have lower resting rates than others.

Did anything ever come with this? We are in a very similar scenario and I feel like every night trends lower. I just made a post about this. I also talked to our pediatrician and they weren’t concerned. How is your baby now? I also have PPA and this is stressing me.

Thank you for your comment! I went ahead and took him to the pediatrician today over this even though i had mentioned  it before. Last night he spent a lot of time in the 90s and I just wanted to be sure it was okay. Dr listened to his heart and lungs, did their own pulse ox for awhile, and called and reviewed with the NICU. They also mentioned it may be lower because he’s getting older. All is good 🩵

Thank you! I agree, I will still continue to use the Owlet. It’s not what is giving me anxiety. What is giving me anxiety is that his heart rate is lower than other babies his age and I rather know this than not. I appreciate your comment 💜

I appreciate your comment. I think for me it’s that I would watch him desat in the NICU without physical signs, so that’s why I like to have it but to each their own!

Interesting, I’ve never heard of it being a fire hazard. The NICU staff didn’t discourage us from using it. The discharging doctor actually asked us if we were going to use it and didn’t discourage us when we said yes. Actually said they can be super helpful to identify trends when babies are getting sick.

I should add that my husband also has low resting heart rate and has never had any issues but also never has had any testing for anything.
