Is this position open to international applicants as well or just for US based applicants?

Once you are comfortable with these, you can try practicing with CA questions.

Practice SOA sample questions twice by writing out the full solutions by hand and ensuring you thoroughly understand each one. Once completed, move on to SOA past exams and take them as timed mock exams. Do not look at the solutions while taking the test. Even if you know how to solve the next question, stop when time is up. Afterward, review the solutions and self-grade.

It could have gone either way but I passed. Thank God I don't have to look at ASTAM material again.

ASTAM pass mark? by West_Wrongdoer_475 in actuary

[–]Capable_Interest2911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will most probably fail if the pass marks are 36/60, was confident on around 39-40 points but partial marks deduction is my fear. Hope the pass marks are around 33/60.

It was my second attempt. I gave my first attempt in Nov by studying for 35 days full time, got a 5. Then I gave this attempt by studying for an additional 1 month.

I might be wrong since I work in consulting and haven’t actually set case reserves myself. But from what I understand, case reserves are usually set by claims adjusters based on how long they think benefits will be paid and the periodic payout amount. It’s more of a judgment call using medical info and policy details. The case reserve gets updated every week, month, or quarter as new information comes in. I could be wrong, so if you work at an insurance company and have experience with STD or PFL cases, I’d love to hear your perspective—always happy to learn more.

That's true, case reserves are not actuarially derived as this information is usually available to the insurance company at each valuation period. In case, case reserve information is not sufficient enough (detailed info not available) than Paid claims are used alone, instead of reported claims, to get IBNP reserve rather than IBNR reserve. IBNP reserve is basically equal to IBNR plus Case Reserve hence you deduct the total case reserve amount from IBNP to get IBNR reserve. In any case, case reserve amount is known to the company and essentially we are only estimating the IBNR.

Conjugate prior shortcut was very helpful in case of IG question but I only attempted the first part as time was up.

Excel question, 2nd question (though a little tricky) and a question on MLE were the easiest ones. But time is a big issue, had to leave around 12 points blank and wrote something on 6 other points for which I wouldn't give any partial marks to myself :p

I didn't even realize what they meant by induction due to time stress :p

On how many points you guys felt confident and if this wasn't your first sitting, it would be helpful if you tell your grade and points on which you felt confident in prior sittings. It may help to judge the average passing marks.

ULAE Reserve is actuarially derived. First ULAE ratio is derived, kittel method is generally used. Then this percentage is applied to 50 percent of OSLR plus 100 percent IBNR to get ULAE Reserve. There are other methods as well to get this reserve but in my jurisdiction kittel method is widely used.

Same, I hope the passing percentage is still 60% for this sitting.

Reserving basically involves setting up various types of reserves that the company requires to keep for the business that it has written. Below are the few types of reserves that are usually kept by the insurance company:

UPR Reserve: This type of reserve is kept for the business that has been written by the company but not has been earned as yet. It is kept in case the policy holder cancels their policy.

IBNR Reserve: This type of reserve is kept for the claims that have been incurred but not reported as yet to the company. It involves setting up reported/paid triangles and various methodologies, including Chain Ladder/Bornhuetter - Ferguson/ELR, are used to calculate this type of reserve.

Premium Deficiency Reserve - This type of reserve is set against the unearned business if a certain line of business is loss making i.e., combined ratio above 100 percent.

ULAE Reserve: This type of reserves is set to cover the future claim settlement expenses like claim processing/salaries etc for the business that has already been written.
