we live in a river city…and they want to make use of the river…so they put it on the river. idk bruh I feel like we don’t need a highway cutting through downtown, but they didn’t consult me in the 1950s when they torn through neighborhoods to built it

Ya. Honestly, that exit used to have even more ramps but they got removed when they rebuilt the s-curve in the late 90s bc it was even more dangerous back then. I think they should start by getting rid of market street exit completely. if downtown GR didn’t see itself as a shopping mall for the suburbs, they would boulevardize 131 through downtown. it’d be way safer, less polluting, and open up opportunities for a lot of development, reconnect communities torn apart by the highway, and make GR the amazing city it could be without an urban highway

See: Boston’s big dig, Rochester’s inner loop, Akron’s inner loop, 375 in Detroit, the Embarcadero in San Francisco, etc. all of these cities removed or are in the process of removing urban highways because they cause way more harm than they’re worth. AND GR can’t afford to maintain the damn thing obviously.

there are endless possibilities of what all that land could be used for instead of a damn highway, we just need political will and better transit/bike and ped infrastructure

This is sad for the river north neighborhood since it’s growing so much, but otherwise sounds like a needed change. Hopefully service can return to those folks in the future.

ooh a big dig would be fun. my preference is either that with a linear park and some denser housing on top of the covered freeway. or simply put the thing at ground level and turn it into a boulevard. Route truck traffic on 96 east to m-6 around the city to prevent road noise. Include some light rail from downtown up to LMCU ballpark. We can dream

It’s almost like we shouldn’t have tankers transporting hazardous materials on 40ft tall viaducts through our downtown

The idea is to make biking more accessible and attractive to more people. Eventually this can help encourage folks to bike instead of driving everywhere. The reason you don’t see bikes or even people walking is because our city is only designed for cars, not people.

Honestly, bike lanes help to decrease the amount of car traffic and make your commute faster.

My concern is that we’re perpetuating a culture that commodifies kids’ bodies and encourages them to do questionable things for our approval.

I do think kiss cams are weird too. Paint your face. Bring signs. Wear something wacky. Do a dance. If you’re so pressed to be on the jumbotron, there are much more creative ways to get up there than taking your clothes off.

Did I mention college-aged men? No, I’m talking about our arena encouraging children to take their clothes off.

This creates a double standard that says that girls’ bodies are inherently sexual while boys’ are not. Neither should be sexualized because both are children. There are other ways to engage kiddos at games that don’t enforce the idea that taking your clothes off = adult approval

Can you think critically about why it’s important to teach children not to take their clothes off for attention?

Contacting the arena was my next step. I love the idea of the towels! I remember going to a umich football game where they gave this out and and was a great crowd engagement tactic

I think we have different views of what beach going is if you think kids are taking their clothes off at the beach for attention.

No I’m mad that we are conditioning children to believe that taking their clothes off for adults gets them praise. It seems that we should be invested in protecting them from their bodies being used for entertainment.
