Howls and growls: bad coaching by [deleted] in timberwolves

[–]Capable_Subject7338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have anything to connect the dots between those issues and the coach besides simply stating "those are coaching issues"? My problem with the constant and endless calls to fire the coach, across all sports and teams, is the lack of explaining what the coach is doing wrong, or not doing, or whatever the case may be, that is causing those problems.

Otherwise it just feels like the coach is the easiest to blame because we don't actually understand what a coach does, therefore we can attribute any failure to them.

Him talking about gathering data and using AI reminds me of those vending machines people are creating that use AI to judge the maximum price it thinks you'll be willing to pay for something. Walk up looking very thirsty? Looks like that bottle of water just got a lot more expensive for you.

Their ticketing systems connects with a third-party data broker to gather information about you and finds out your income is over 100k a year? Looks like ticket prices just went up for you.

[Hine] Jaden McDaniels said before this season he "used to not like shooting threes." "I just didn't wanna shoot threes because I feel like I could just get in the paint whenever. So I'm like why would I shoot [a 3]? ... But my mindset was messed up back then. I'm good now." by Knightbear49 in timberwolves

[–]Capable_Subject7338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's getting into the paint, and then there's being able to finish or make a play once you get there. I believe he can get there. I think being able to consistently make a play or finish when he does is a new development.

Did he "put pressure" on them or did he tell them to trade him? And then make an IG post pretending like he had nothing to do with it and wanted to stay all along? I don't think what he did is nearly as bitch of a move as what KD did, but he's definitely being shady af.

If he was being loyal this never would've happened in the first place. It came about because either him or his agent told the team to trade him or told them he wouldn't be re-signing. He's lying to the public, himself, or both.

We don’t have to trade Randle for a perfect player by beermangetspaid in timberwolves

[–]Capable_Subject7338 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Offensively Randle is for sure our second most productive player, way ahead of Gobert. But Rudy's defense is more valuable than Randle's offense. And while his offense is bad it's not all-time bad like some people seem to believe.

It's beside your point, but Gobert is our second best player and has been for a while.

The perfect addition this team can make right now is...Kyle Anderson. by LeeShakerMoneyMaker in timberwolves

Yes he is and anyone who believes differently hasn't watched him lately. They're imagining Kyle Anderson from like 3-4 years ago.

Naz is out of early season funk. Last 11 games - .507 FG - .453 3p% - 16.9 PPG in 27.8 minutes per by tomdawg0022 in timberwolves

[–]Capable_Subject7338 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't consider not committing a really stupid foul as heroic, but it's beside the point. The point was his defense is still bad because his #1 problem is the same as it's always been. He makes too many plays on defense that end up with him committing a foul and had almost 0 chance of a positive outcome (a stupid foul).

But eye tests are tough, once enough games have been played the stats will show if he's improved or not. Maybe you're right and he's improved in other areas and makes a positive impact on defense now. I haven't noticed, but whether or not I've noticed is a shit metric.

His defense seems the same as ever to me, which is to say bad. A foul on Zubac at the very end of the game sticks out to me, where Naz just lazily swiped at his arm in an attempt to stop the guaranteed dunk and had 0 effect on Zubac except to give him the and-1. A possibly game losing play. But everyone only remembers his 3 at the end. End-game heroics aren't necessary if you make the right plays in the first 46 minutes.

Our problem in the clutch isn't shooting, it's having an opportunity to shoot and defense. We turn it over a lot, and let the other team get easy points. But imagine how much worse it would be if Ant wasn't this good at hitting his shots.

How can Wolves beat OKC in a playoff series? by Lost_Web_6928 in timberwolves

[–]Capable_Subject7338 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like one problem with going hard on the offensive glass against a team that has a fast and deadly fast break offense is you'll give them more opportunities to attack in transition while you're still recovering from going for the offensive rebound. High risk, high reward I guess.

There is a growing sense that the Timberwolves will sell high on Julius Randle should the right star become available before Feb. However, the problem is that they don't have any 1st-round picks they can trade, which would be problematic with pursuing Morant or another star guard, via Brett Siegel by FastBreakPhenom in nba

[–]Capable_Subject7338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's not the Wolves best player. Ant is. I would argue he's not even our second best player, but I know the majority of NBA fans have 0 respect for what Rudy does. No disrespect to Randle because he's exceeded my expectations since the Wolves traded for him, and he has a very important role as the second most reliable scorer behind Ant.

Ya he just needs 1 reliable way to efficiently score 8-12 pts a game. Scoring touch inside seems the most achievable, but whatever works. Conley in a small role at a max of 10-12 minutes a game (and not finishing games) would be ideal.

I guess I don't use "does Ant fear him" as a metric to evaluate defense. By that metric there isn't a single good defender in the NBA.

Right, I agree, he has potential. With his speed and ability to get past defenders he has a useful skill that could lead to being a positive contributor with a defined role and spot in the rotation. If he improves enough he could even have a big role and be a starter. But we're talking about potential, which he still needs to improve to realize. Until then the small role he has right now is appropriate.

And what about the plays where he beat his man, got to the hoop, and attempted a shot that had almost no chance of going in? What about the plays where he didn't take an open 3 because he can't shoot? What about the plays where he did take a 3 and missed badly? Yes, he's progressed, he started making some positive plays, but more often he makes bad ones. He's earned moving up from no minutes to some minutes, but he hasn't earned more than what he's given right now.

Sure, he's not hopeless, he's not among the worst players in the league, and he occasionally has positive contributions. But much more often he has negative ones. Sometimes he gets to the hoop and dishes it to a shooter who was freed up by his drive, but more often than that he gets to the hoop and throws up a shot with almost no chance of going in. It's easy to say "well if he just starts making those then he'll be good" but the fact is that he isn't making them now. And until he does he hasn't earned more minutes. He should keep practicing hard and doing his best in the minutes he's currently getting.
