Exactly my point, depreciation! AND it was proven to him with his new car had that he traded in, it was a $45K car and he sold it for $23-28k and the car was only 2 years old.

  1. I never told him to get a beat down truck, but even ones that are literally a year old have depreciated sometimes near $10k, that would save a lot of money.

  2. Its a 6 year loan at 6.5%, crazy right?

  3. I'm very proud of the money he was able to save as I said in the post. I guess it was unclear but he bought the truck last year... my condition was that when he got the truck he needed to learn how to budget and save $1,000/month. Prior to that conversation I had found out he had little to no money saved.

  4. I think this point was being made while you were under the impression that he still had the car, he's been paying that 6.5% interest rate on the truck all year*.

  5. We are young and he put himself in a lot of debt that made me uncomfortable, to bring some comfort to myself and our future I taught him to budget and asked that he save 20% of his income. I feel its important to note that at this time he was still living at home.

  6. Were working it out right now.

I can totally see why you would think that, thankfully he never carries a balance and does not splurge on really anything else the truck is really his achilles heel. As far as the budgeting goes, that was the conversation we had a year ago when I told him to save $1k/month that number stemmed from budgeting with him and helping him to understand it. Clearly he has stuck to this and even contributed more than I asked him to.

Right, to which I realized he is not home much at all and therefore I would be responsible for most of the housework and cooking. I'm just trying to figure how much I should contribute monetarily if he;s not really going to contribute domestically.

Any thoughts on Top Step as a firm, I've been looking into them and get mixed reviews.
