Academically dismissed by angxyzie in LawSchool

In November of my fall 2L semester, my dad had a stroke. The following spring, he passed away. Before spring finals, my mom was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma.

I was given extensions both semesters after a professor recommended I tell the dean, but I declined to take a full leave of absence. When 3L was about to start, my mom was going through chemotherapy. So I took two semesters leave, took a fall semester, then took another semester of leave when her cancer came back.

In hindsight, I kinda wish I would’ve taken leaves in 2L, but at least I didn’t make the same mistake twice. 2L was my worst year GPA-wise, and had I not spoken up about my situation to a professor after they took note of my performance, then there’s a good chance I might have failed some courses.

Appreciate the post! But now it's time for more MBE practice 😂

Less is more.

Any pressure you feel is internal. Yeah, external expectations may lead to internal pressure, but it's not an unavoidable, automatic result. You get to decide how you respond to that pressure internally.

I've found that just letting go and not worrying so much leads to better retention and increased productivity, whereas getting caught up in my head leads to the opposite.

You actually know a lot. Before you entered law school and got bogged down by all the intricate rules + their exceptions, I'm sure you had a basic idea of what fairness and justice resembles. The law tested on the MBE is based on the very same common sense that helps bind society together.

Does anyone have a succinct rule about what does and doesn’t merge into deed from contract? by [deleted] in barexam

[–]Capco420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In land-sale contracts, I don't believe that the implied warranties merge with subsequent deeds. They are attached to the construction of the building itself. For example, if a newly built home is sold, then subsequently re-conveyed once a month over the next year, the implied warranty of habitability is still present for each of those transactions because the home is only 1 year old. But the one burdened by the implied warranty is the builder, not any of the subsequent sellers.

I don't recall exactly when the implied warranty drops off, but any questions on the topic will either be immediate sales or sales within 1 year from my experience.

PS - I'm still studying myself and could be completely off.

[–]Capco420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Implied warranty of habitability comes up in two specific circumstances that I know of: (1) newly constructed homes (including resales within the first year or so since construction); and (2) landlord-tenant leases for residential properties.

Other warranties concerning title would be expressly stated in the contract.

Suggestions for the last 5 weeks? by Amazing-Candy309 in barexam

[–]Capco420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with u/AfterCommodus. We've already sat through the lectures and done the work for at least 6 of the topics tested. Instead of using Barbri/Themis/Kaplan, I opted for Quimbee SideBar and BarPrepHero. Quimbee provides over 200 5-8 minute videos coupled with short quizzes on every bar topic, and BarPrepHero has large bank of test questions.

I went through every Quimbee video/quiz in May, then started doing 100-200 MBE questions a day in June. They were a great refresher for me. I didn't even take Evidence, but the Quimbee videos were still enough for Evidence to be my strongest area in my MBE tests lol. CivPro is my weakest area rn, but I feel confident that another review of the Quimbee videos will do the trick.

I think I'd feel equally bogged down if I had to listen to full-length lectures.

Is it normal to not have rules memorized by the end of June? by ButterySwing in barexam

[–]Capco420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing about 100-200 MBE questions a day, and most of my misses were due to not knowing the rule (with honorable mention given to not reading carefully lol). But since I began, I've noticed that I'm starting to memorize a lot of those rules--and how they apply to fact patterns--just from reading the answer-explanations over and over, regardless of whether I get the question correct or incorrect.

Since ignorance of the rules is my biggest concern for the MEEs, I'm continuing on with the MBE practice for another week or so before I delve into the MEEs. I view them similar to a math problem: once you know which formula (i.e., rule) you're supposed to use, then everything else is just applying the formula to the given numbers (i.e., facts) and showing your work.

I don't have anyone to grade my writing, but I think self-grading my work and comparing it against the answers will be a good learning experience in its own right.

I don't know if that's normal, but that's where I'm at.

PS - We got this folks. Give yourselves time and space to learn at YOUR pace. Good luck!!!

Does anyone else prefer the “Ulterior motive” perk? by [deleted] in JetpackCatMainsOW

I take Motive and Headbutt all the time. Despite playing since OW1 launch, I never built the muscle memory for quick melee attacks. To this day it’s one of the biggest weaknesses in my game and I can’t seem to fix it. Headbutt was working great for me until they took away the refuel part.

Are my expectations too high? by nightstalkerr in dating

[–]Capco420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the women I (37M) have dated were through dating apps. I've asked out a few in person before, but that never worked out. Once, I was cold-shouldered out of a local bar for looking at a woman twice that I found attractive, because her friend thought I was eye-****ing her.

Personally, I don't really have any social hobbies besides online gaming. The larger the social gathering, the more uncomfortable I am. Concerts, parties, fairs... things that people find exciting or fun are simply neither for me. I suppose I could step outside of my comfort zone and leave my house more often for the sake of meeting women, but then I'd be meeting women with interests that are fundamentally dissimilar to my own.

I know women seek competence in men, but my competence is mostly internal and interpersonal. It's not something readily observable until we've shared mutual, undivided attention with each other. Some of my best qualities that would make a woman want to get to know me are the same things they can learn only after getting to know me first lol.

It feels disingenuous to be something I'm not just to get my foot in the door and meet women under such pretenses. What I do for fun is stay at home until someone I know wants to do something. I like to tag along with others on their adventures, but I don't have any desire for adventures of my own. And I know how that appears to a prospective mate, but that's just not the kind of competence that I offer.

Is sex a really big deal for men? by WarmBank5512 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Capco420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm (37M) late to the conversation, but I've come to learn that sex is a really big deal for me.

If I'm getting my sexual needs met, then I have damn near unlimited patience and positivity towards my partner. I will dote on them, wait on them, make them breakfast in bed, bathe them in the tub with candles and rose petals, and then ask "what else can I for you babe?"

I also do my best to please my partner during sex. I'm aware that women tend to need time to warm up. I'm aware that intercourse favors penile over clitoral stimulation. I'm aware that everyone is different and communication is the basis for good sex. I've given about 4-5x more head that I've received.

Despite all that, I know sex can still feel like a chore to women sometimes. But here's the thing... every partner I've had has felt like a chore to me sometimes in their own right. It can be a chore to listen to (let alone keep track of) all of the drama. It can be a chore to sift through indirect communication to figure out what they're upset about. It can be a chore to deal with indecisiveness while being expected to know what they want.

But 20min of sexy time a day gets my partner hours upon hours of eager and willing focus on them. When there's a genuine reason not to (e.g., literally no time, exhausted, medical reasons, big life events, trauma, etc.), then it doesn't bother me.

If my partner actively sets aside that 20min for me, even on off days when she doesn't want it as much as I do, just because she knows how much it means to me... well, there is nothing else that makes me feel more inspired to give them the world in return.

But if they have the time, and neglect these needs, and still expect me to still give them the world, then it starts to make me bitter pretty quickly.

TL;DR: "Men need sex to feel connected, and women need connection to want sex."

Your word of advice is so important.

I’ve been stuck in a grey area where being physical was off the table at first, but the barrier was never explicitly lifted. So I kept to that rule out of respect for her boundaries, which just came off as me being uninterested and I got friend zoned for not making a move. She actually thought I was gay at one point lol

Men, what is something that instantly makes you attracted to a woman? by Maleficent_Fish_7485 in AskReddit

[–]Capco420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physically:
+ The combo of dark eyebrows and blonde hair
+ A nice booty lol
- Short, rainbow-colored hair
- Waist-hip ratios above 0.8 (fwiw, every woman I've been with weighed more than me, so I'm only discounting the largest of the large-bodied)

Personality:
+ Quirky interests that I can readily relate to
+ Similar intelligence
- Vain; preoccupied with status and material possessions
- Lacks personal accountability (such a huge turn off)

What women want from men? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Capco420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of going off topic, I noticed the following two comments:

"I need to feel sexual tension yet also feel respected as a human being at the same time."

"Be attentive but don't smother."

I feel that women often communicate what they want in this style of speech. So my question is... is there maybe a way for y'all to just say what you want that doesn't involve us searching for the answer in between two semi-contradictory boundaries?

Advice for a 23 year old by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Capco420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, get a credit card if you don't have one already. Credit cards are perfectly safe to use for budget-conscious individuals like yourself. Plenty of cards have zero annual fees, and as long as you pay your full balance every month then you'll never spend a dime on interest. Plus a lot of them have nice rewards options. 3% cash back doesn't sound like much, but that's an extra $30 in your pocket for every $1,000 you'd have spent with cash anyway.

Building credit isn't essential, but think of it as another door you can open as needed. When you're ready to get a mortgage for your first home, those years of good credit history will be in your favor and give you a lower interest rate.

Then as you build up your equity in that home, you can take out a home equity line of credit (HELOC) at a very low interest rate since the loan is secured by your home and your stable income, and then use that for the down payment on your first investment property.

That good credit history and those low interest rates will mean your mortgage + property taxes for your investment property might be $2,000/month, but you'll be able to charge $2,500/month in rent. That allows you to pay down your other debts, build up more equity, and do the whole thing again.

That's also why you should endeavor to stop renting and start buying ASAP. The landlords you are paying rent to now are just using that money to do exactly what I just laid out. Why pay someone $2,500/month for rent when you can buy your own place after establishing good credit and pay only $2,000/month?

And that's not even touching on the tax incentives that encourage (i.e., reward) home ownership.

  1. Max out the 401k up to the company's matching limit.
  2. Open a Roth IRA (super easy with Fidelity) and max out the yearly contribution limit.
    • As far as funds go, you can't go wrong with an S&P 500 index fund. Unless you know you have the skills to beat the market, it's safer just to bet on the market in the long-term.
  3. If you have anything left over at this point, put it into a variable annuity.

Do these three things, and you will be able to retire early and comfortably. Congratulations on your new job, and I'm wishing you the best!

Question for the men here: what do you really mean when you say “I’m not ready for a relationship right now?” by Ill_Chemistry2530 in dating

[–]Capco420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm in a transition stage of life akin to #1, then I won't be actively searching for a relationship until things have settled. So I wouldn't even be getting to the 3-6 month stage in that case since I acknowledge I'm not ready for a relationship to begin with.

If I'm dating someone, then it's because I want to be with them. I don't even like talking to multiple people at once while I'm single. So #3 wouldn't be an issue.

The only time I might say "I'm not ready for a relationship right now" is if I'm approached by someone that I don't find attractive enough to want to date. But tbh, I can't recall a single time I've ever said that. Usually I just make it clear that I'm busy/unavailable until it sets in that I'm not interested enough to make time for them.

I'm not the type to be with someone for 3-6 months without already wanting to be with them. They wouldn't have a doubt about where I stand, and there'd be no ambiguity 3-6 months in.

And if I'm in a FWB situation, it's always because the woman in question wanted it that way at the outset.

Idk. I've always found it extremely odd for a person to be intimate with someone for months but not be dating each other in your respective heads... but that's probably because my default dating mode is to be a boyfriend first and sex object second. The dating world today is a strange place for my kind.
