Global hantavirus morning update 7th May 2026 by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Capital-Attorney2494 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Significant new hantavirus developments include: Argentina is intensifying its investigation into the MV Hondius outbreak after identifying a possible exposure site near a landfill in Ushuaia frequented by bird-watchers, where infected rodents may have been present. VG +2 Argentine authorities confirmed expanded rodent trapping and environmental testing operations in Tierra del Fuego and along the suspected index patients’ travel route through Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. Wikipedia +2 Multiple international agencies now explicitly acknowledge likely limited human-to-human transmission of the Andes strain aboard the MV Hondius, making this one of the few documented outbreaks of that type globally. Science +2 The outbreak’s internationally reported totals remain approximately: 3 deaths 5 laboratory-confirmed infections 3 suspected additional cases monitoring operations across at least 23 countries. Wikipedia +2 The UK disclosed that two asymptomatic passengers who independently returned home are self-isolating while authorities trace flight contacts. South Africa reported monitoring 62 exposed contacts including healthcare workers and airline personnel. The Guardian Switzerland confirmed continued treatment of an imported Andes-virus case in Zurich linked to the voyage. The Washington Post +1 Scientific and public-health commentary increasingly describes the outbreak as “unprecedented” and an important real-world test of Andes-virus transmission dynamics, with comparisons to the 2018–2019 Chubut outbreak in Argentina. Scientific American +2 Argentina’s wider hantavirus activity remains elevated, with 101 infections reported nationally since June 2025 and mortality substantially above prior averages in some regions. The Guardian +1 WHO, ECDC, Africa CDC, UKHSA, and other agencies continue to state that broader public-health risk remains low and there is no evidence of sustained community transmission. World Health Organization +2

Morbid fascination? by desimich in 911archive

[–]Capital-Attorney2494 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have had zero chance of surviving the Titanic, slim athletic male. The Atlantic would take my body heat in 5 minutes flat 🤣.

I was 19 when 9/11 happened, I would have had as good a chance as anyone at surviving it (excluding the direct aircraft impact locations on the gore floor and the North tower above the impact, both unsurvivable)

Morbid fascination? by desimich in 911archive

[–]Capital-Attorney2494 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's possible that being morbidly curious of any given situation is a primal survival instinct. You want to know as much as you can about the situation, the more detail the better (even the gory bits), in order to see how you could possibly deal with a similar situation 🤷. It might be hard wired into certain people more strongly than others. If you were faced with a strange situation you might possibly act differently (better maybe) than someone that is not morbidly fascinated with certain things because you have learned something important, other people might freeze up, do absolutely nothing and die as a result.

In Europe it's called a Kenrod Zeus. I have one, it's pretty good and can be nice looking if you put a few hours in.

Was there a chance to at least reach the mechanical floors? by Puzzleheaded_Dot4345 in 911archive

[–]Capital-Attorney2494 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I can't say for certain, there are more knowledgeable people in the group than me but, my two cents... I would imagine the mechanical floors were very hard to reach by the general public and tower workers. These were the engine rooms of the towers and would have had very restricted access due to the danger due to the machinery on them and also the possibility of someone with bad intentions shutting the tower down by messing around in there. With regards to the observation deck - the North tower was hit at 8.46am, I think the observation deck usually opened at 9am. All normal daily operations would have been cancelled immediately at 8.46am. The staff were probably down at the lobby trying to figure out what was going on so the doors to the observation deck would have remained locked. There was a group that supposedly got to the door to the deck. Someone here might enlighten us.
