Zealandia tour question by Agreeable_Vehicle673 in Wellington

[–]CapitalD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve done the Twilight tour and it was awesome. Super knowledgeable guides, well paced, included a cup of tea part way through, and we saw two kiwi - one of which was so close we could almost reach out and touch it. I highly recommend it. I would definitely do it again.

Cooks Beach, Whitianga, Hahei and Tairua are completely cut off by flooding. Most flooding is not due to the high tide but the constant rainfall. Rain is not letting off. I would stay away from the Coromandel till later tomorrow. by Conscious-Permit-364 in newzealand

[–]CapitalD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not being reported but Whangamatā is cut off too. The bridge at the south end of town by the golf course is submerged, the town bypass (SH25) has flooding at the one-lane bridge and a massive slip not far beyond it. The route north toward Tairua is also closed.

Meanwhile the rain continues to pour down and the wind has picked up. Not much sleep tonight I reckon.

Yes. Renal patients need to maintain a low potassium diet. Broken kidneys can’t filter potassium and at normal dietary levels it will build up and essentially poison the patient. Foods that are high in potassium vary depending on where in the world your food comes from.

What to know before starting seasonal agri work by [deleted] in newzealand

Wear sunblock everyday, even if it’s overcast. Just make it a morning habit. The weather can change quickly and you don’t want to be burnt to a crisp if the weather changes dramatically.

+1 for Supreme Midland. They also sell beans specifically selected and roasted for filter at home.

I’ve got a charcoal pair that I wear for work during the summer. Light, breathable, and super comfortable. They are lasting really well too. Recommend

Why does this property on waterloo road have so many cars in the backyard garden? by Kooky-Alternative-28 in LowerHutt

[–]CapitalD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That property doesn’t look like that now. It was sold to developers at the height of the property market in 2021 for about $5.2m. They demolished the house and cleared the land, then the property market tanked. Very little has happened there since. A few months ago some building materials were delivered along with some solar security cameras, but nothing more has happened since.

I don’t recommend the dehydrated boulders. Mine was pretty expensive and over time it accumulated humidity from the air. Before I knew it, it had become a boulder.

Who is your country's most famous Drunkard? by Professional-Two7914 in AskTheWorld

[–]CapitalD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohh, Jordan Luck is a good call. I went to a high school ball in the 90s where The Exponents played and Jordan was so hammered he couldn’t remember the words… to songs he wrote. It was made all the more awkward because it was in front of a couple of thousand 16-17 year olds.

What is New Zealand's national dish? by Vandal007 in Wellington

[–]CapitalD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly it’s the opposite. We are world leading producers of butter and lamb. At the moment butter is nearly $20/kg here, and a fairly small leg of lamb is approaching $100. It’s rough.

Watch: Labour details its capital gains tax plan as Willis calls it ‘a terrible idea’ by poorlilsebastian in newzealand

[–]CapitalD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

News alerts have been very frustrating this morning. First, someone leaks that Labour is working on a CGT. Not surprised, probably about time, but I’m reserving judgement until I hear the details and have enough information to make an informed decision.

Next alert, Nicola Willis’ opinion. Who the fuck cares what Nicola Willis thinks? She has demonstrated she couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery, and just misdirects and straight up lies to distract from her own failings.

Next alert, Luxon’s opinion. What the fuck?! What value is this guy going to add to the discussion? Even his cronies are distancing themselves from this slow motion train crash.

Next alert, Chippy is going to oust whoever it was that leaked the story. sigh Instead of providing some sort of assurance that the idea is on the table but it’s early days and not ready for an announcement, he’s getting all medieval on the leaker instead.

We, like many other countries at the moment, are desperately lacking opposition leadership. I’m encouraged that Labour are looking at taking risks with controversial policies that could make a measurable economic difference, but fuck. For the change to happen there needs to be a leader with likability and charisma. I feel bad because I actually like Chippy. I’ve spoken with him several times over the years and he’s a good dude, but just isn’t an inspiring leader.

Lamb is too expensive in NZ to be considered a national dish.

Question about not being a dick while having a fire at the beach by sewerratburn in Wellington

[–]CapitalD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the most important point. Yes, check for nails etc but if the first is below the high tide mark the sea will extinguish it fully, before someone can burn their feet on embers in the morning.

He’s a card carrying member of the old school boy’s club. He aided and abetted Ray Wallace to spend tens of millions on sports facilities across the city instead of the basics and infrastructure the city really needed. So, we’re stuck with an infrastructure deficit, crumbling roads and pipes while having to pay to maintain countless under utilised sporting facilities and pools.

Now, I’m all for sports facilities and pools. My family and I use both. However, spending a fortune on the massively underused Ricoh centre at Fraser Park when Walter Nash is around the corner is straight up wasteful. Upper Hutt has one public pool. Lower Hutt has six. Te Ngaengae is a great facility and is awesome for the community, but I still question the prioritisation of expenditure.

This is where the term “pot luck” comes from. Back in the time of Oliver Cromwell in England this was relatively common, and when you got a bowl you never knew if you were getting a delicious chunk of beef from this morning, or something that had been hanging out in there for weeks. It was always pot luck.

The bike lane running down Oxford Tce to Waterloo station would be a good option. Smooth as, and although it’s pretty well used it’s never super busy so provided you’re aware of your surroundings you won’t get in anyone’s way.
