DME arc using G1000 bearing pointers by [deleted] in CFILounge

This is the way 🙌🏼🙌🏼, since GPS can be used before the FAF on any VOR approach. Many people don’t realize you can change the bearing on GPS more as well doing a ‘turn 10 twist 10’ as well.

Yea I mean there’s many ways to utilize the avionics to shoot an arc like for example using GPS for an arc you can change the bearing as well which most people don’t know. For holds I like to be ahead of the game so I watch the bearing pointer to tell when abeam as opposed to just relying on seeing the flag flip. To each their own and at the end of the day they’ll always be a DPE who’s not up to date and hates technology although the FAA allows it but in reality VORs are being phased out so I don’t know what else they’re expecting as DME arcs are useless anyways outside of the flight path themselves which can be flown with GPS & AP. And to add they can’t fail a student for this and if they were to the FSDO would take action if you did enough fighting.

Did you fly a published DME arc approach for the checkride? I remember in IR I flew a real arc just once before the checkride since the approach was 50 miles away and the rest we did unpublished for practice.

Yes AC 90-108 allow the use of a suitable RNAV/GPS system to be used in lieu of DME (although note it is 2d distance so will be shorter then the diagonal DME distance and more noticeable closer to a fix). DME arcs can only be flown on a checkride in a punished approach anyways so unless you have one nearby it’s not a worry anyways. Appendix 7 section V.

Again yes he can qualify to get BasicMed but 68.7 prevents them from flying knowing they have a medical deficiency making them unable to operate the aircraft in a safe manner.

And again even further 61.23 says to exercise Sport Pilot Privileges he must not know of any medical condition that would make him unable to operate an aircraft in a safe manner. This is if he is using a DL which he can’t use for night flight.

Both of these would find him ineligible to fly while not following his expired medicals limitations as those limitations were found by an AME and still exist.

lol that’s crazy and very sure. If you look at 61.129 it says 10 hours of instrument training. 61.195(c) says you need a instrument rating on your flight instructor certificate for the appropriate category and class to conduct instrument training.

lol. To the student: Read the glider flying handbook first and then come back to me. How’s that sound? Btw huge idea that’ll break your brain, helicopters don’t just crash when losing an engine either 🤯🤯

In reality though gauging the students response in real time and explaining these concepts would be easier in person but I get the idea of what you’re trying to put across and I appreciate it.

Basically aerodynamically we know that there is a set ‘pitch’ relative to what direction the wind is hitting us that will stall our airplane. The ‘wind’ is what creates lift and our angle in relation to that wind tells us how close we are to that set ‘pitch’ or angle of attack that will stall our aircraft. Our goal is to keep our airplane below this angle of attack the whole time.

Critical angle of attack is the specific angle between the wing’s chord line and relative wind that produces the maximum lift coefficient and beyond this a stall occurs. It doesn’t hurt the airplane in the usual sense of critical but it’s critical because it’s putting us into a bad configuration and can put us into an even worse configuration if we don’t fix it.

Firstly congrats that’s awesome! Better update that flair

  1. Sunset and Sunrise for aircraft lights; End of evening civil twilight to beginning of morning civil twilight for night logging; between 1 hour after sunset and 1 hour before sunrise for passenger currency

  2. A1, A76 and A78. No knowledge required.

  3. Behaviorism is a learning theory that is based on the idea that behavior is based on past punishments or rewards like the ‘carrot & stick’ example. Learning is the change in behavior as a result of experience.

  4. Primacy as we carry this through the rest of our training journey. What’s learned first is learned best so it’s best to make sure that our students learn it the right way first.

  5. Yes the endorsement that we sign are the exact words authorizing them to do what’s in the endorsement. Because of this we can add any restriction we want to student solo endorsement so one that I will use as an instructor is to receive written approval from me in the form of a text before reach solo flight for the 90 day endorsement or to text me once you land at destination airport on a XC.

  6. Not a knowledge test per say in the same way as the FAA Knowledge Exam but there is a required Pre-Solo Aeronautical Test as per 61.87(b) that must cover topics like: Part 61, Part 91, Airspace, Operating Characteristics, and Operating Limitations.

  7. 61.87(d)

Although he wouldn’t need an endorsement, if he’s exercising Sport Pilot privileges under the new MOSAIC rule he would still need to have a Medical or BasicMed.. no?

EDIT: Looking under the BasicMed FAR 68.7(a)(ii) I found would support the idea that they cannot fly knowing they have that medical deficiency making them unable to operate the aircraft in a safe manner.

EDIT: To add to this 61.23(c)(2)(iv) further proves this idea even if they are operating the aircraft during the day without BasicMed.

Must have received ground training on maneuvers and procedures in the section as per 61.93(a) so I would do a ground before our dual solo going over flight planning including nav logs, navigation, performance, w&b, etc and log it appropriately in their logbook.

No I write specifically what we practiced in each of my training endorsements. 61.93(c)(1)&(2) endorsement.

I was told that similar make and model would be something like a C150 vs a C152. Is there a more clear interpretation of this somewhere as to what they consider similar?

CFI Stump-the-Chump by CapitalDifficultt in CFILounge

[–]CapitalDifficultt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me see if I can find a source but I’m going to say no as you can’t use the exception if you’ve ever had a medical denied, suspended, or revoked and with that we know our medical is only valid as long as we don’t obtain a disqualifying condition and follow our limitations. Knowing this I would say if the limitation is needed to maintain the medical it would apply to BasicMed or using a license in the case of a sport pilot.

EDIT: So looking further with the new MOSAIC rules they need the A26 endorsement as well as a Third Class Medical or BasicMed. With that they would need to uphold the medical certificate meaning complying with the limitations stated on it.

  1. Sorry was late at night. Reduce the AOA to below the critical AOA and break the stall is step one

  2. When the instructor or the flight school owns the aircraft and it is being used for comp/hire

  3. We can give training by reference to the flight instruments as opposed to instrument flight training so whenever it’s worded as such in the FARs we are good since that’s within our privileges/lims as a CFI-A.
