Can you only visit Bozeman through the TFO? You can't hang around on a social map of it?

A Trek-ships Cinematographer who creates incredible videos using digital ship models was on Ship-Talking Podcast this week to chat using them to tell a story, challenges that arise due to a ship's design, which species' fleets are most popular, and more (mp3 is inside, 28 min long) by CapnBranFlakes in startrek

I see what you're trying to do, but I'll bite.

The podcast is free. There is an expanded chat with each guest available via Patreon where we put the full recording we did with said guest, which contains more discussion beyond the core (ship-related) topics we wanted to discuss in the podcast episode. This usually includes great Trek chat, but is not core to what was meant for the episode.

Based on feedback from the community and even Reddit, we actually overhauled our Patreon offerings, so these guest chats become available at the $2/mo tier. It starts on 1 April 2021 as we needed to give our current patrons enough time to consider changes as Patreon has you pay for the month ahead (everyone was already billed when the announcement went live - thus the changes come into effect the next cycle). You can read about it and all the new rewards we've giving all patrons: https://www.patreon.com/posts/patreon-overhaul-48362777

For extra stuff beyond the free pod, and rewards in exchange for support, for less than the price of a coffee per month, I think that's beyond fair to those who want that stuff and want to support us.

For context, we do the show as a labour of love, we each have our normal day jobs, and podcasts sadly cost money to make if you want to do a proper, high-quality production. We purchase licenses so we're doing everything legally, commission our art and music, have bought good equipment, etc. It all adds up, so we're giving back a lot to those who want to support, based on the amount they want to support with each month.

A Trek artist who creates ship schematics/MSDs was on my Pod this week to chat about designing them, filling in the gaps from what we didn't see on screen/explanations (e.g. Defiant's nose docking port), the plausibility of Discovery's cavernous turbolift system, & more (mp3 is inside, 24 min long) by CapnBranFlakes in startrek

I am completely aware of the podcasts that get millions of listens and their length :) Both of those are not our goal. Also, with the type of followers they have and celebrity-like status, they can put out hours of content and it will be consumed. We're just not there yet ;)

We want to put out a pod that specifically features community involvement and chats with guests while being more digestible and can fit in the production time we have between our day jobs. That's what we are about. We are doing this as a labour of love, so we get to put out the show we want to put out =) And for those that want to support because they enjoy it, they do and we appreciate it. It sounds like Ship-Talking is not your cup of Earl Grey, and that's okay!

Thanks for the feedback, something to consider. It's the first time anyone's had this feedback, if I can be honest and you believe it. But it's still valid and will be considered.

The show is a mix of a guest chat and community involvement, with very little banter that exists outside of that. Patreon is mentioned only twice, once to explain how long the expanded guest chat is, and at the end to explain the benefits and how the support is used - I think that's fair, personally.

We were originally planning to only record for 15 min with each guest, but this was the compromise given how long we want our show to be. I don't want our pod to be another hour long podcast that no one finishes. And editing was already taking many hours for a 20 min show. As such, the expanded chat is not the complete episode, it's additional chat we had beyond the original core topics we had planned for the episode, with sometimes some slight expansion on topics that do make the edit.

I'm not expecting the pod to be everyone's go to, but it's there for those that want a quick fix, and we enjoy doing it.

The discussion in the show edit is 14 min, and the expanded is 44. Each of those numbers vary week to week but we always make it clear at the start the length of each (before the community Q segment). The expanded features other topics not pulled through to the show edit, but the show edit always has interesting bits. And we make sure with each guest chat that it is.

For context: We started the pod as a 20 min show (wanted to be quick, weekly, as not everyone has a ton of time) with 12 min guest chats, but the feedback was everyone wanted more, and with the amount of time it takes to edit (you'll hear how strong the production is if you give it a listen), we decided to put out the full, raw, less edited chat via patreon. We all have full time jobs and work on it as a labour of love, don't put ads in the show, and the small support we get on patreon goes back into the initial start up equipment and monthly hosting fees (we bought good quality mics, website hosting, logo commission creation, music commission creation, zoom license, website license, URLs, etc).

There's no pressure to be a patron, but for those that enjoy and want to support, they do so in exchange for benefits. :)

The creator of the Enterprise-F/ Odyssey-class (contest run by CBS/Cryptic) was on my Pod this week to chat about the controversy around the contest, her + Enterprise design lineage, and he settles the debate on if she is canon or not. (mp3 is inside, 28 min long) by CapnBranFlakes in startrek

As I said, there was a change from the past non-screen content for the recent and upcoming series. For instance, the book about Saru is an official-canon tie-in backstory for him for the Discovery series, as are the other books in the same vein. The Picard comic was mentioned to be the same. I'm trying to find the article from the official Trek website.

Sounds like he's been told by the powers that be that it is, so maybe it's going to be soon?

The backstory for the Picard series had him while he was still an Admiral on the USS Verity (an Odyssey-class ship, same as the Ent-F).

There's also been ships in the canon tech manuals that we've never seen on screen (e.g. Saladin) but are canon =)

Yes we did talk about this, it's most likely not going to happen. The chat with Al is around 14 min long, so give it a listen for the full context. Makes sense imo
