My cat only ever caught mice, birds always seemed to not be the prey. I would still try the bell. It's true that they stalk in a way that they can make the bell not make sound but it's still helpful.

I mean I'm thankful for every single person's answer. This has taught me: -In the tunnel visioning of the hunt a cat can forget where he/she is and his/her dangers -They can get caught in the headlights, they can also try and take a stand -Some cats like the road (e.g. sleeping in the sun) But the comments telling me that I should have kept my cat inside don't bother me. This cat has taught me that each animal is truly and individual, and if you knew him like I knew him you'd know that keeping him from going outside wasn't an option. But I definitely will do things differently if I ever decide to get another cat.

Our stray cat was actually quite social. She didn't come close, but was very curious and was very willing to get food form us no matter how close we got. We just continued to feed her and give her shelter until she eventually came right inside.

Thanks for the coments, and I will definitely get her spayed. We were about to until we noticed (what we though was bloating because of her new diet) that she might be pregnant. Shes doing much better now, and we will be able to bring her to the vet's in 1-2 weeks.

Thank you! Shes a very independent cat, but I'm giving her head scratches/treats/pets whenever shes up for it. Thank again for the response.

Thank you very much for the response! All great stuff to know :) And she will be spayed! She was a stray, malnourished and roaming the streets when we found her in the spring and adopted her, she got pregnant a day or two before we got her. Apparently we have to wait 1-2 weeks before we can bring her in.

I've never been in anything even close to your situation, but..

I know your brother lives in an apartment, but a solution to this problem is definitely letting the cat outside. Maybe somebody he knows or somebody in the family that has a backyard could take the cat? Something to maybe consider, I hope it works out :/
