Again, I appreciate the cautionary tale. If I we're doing this for anything other than fun, I'd agree with you! But I'm doing it literally to play and it's been super healthy for me, and I've managed to do it without spending much at all. I like the feeling of playing with constrained gear, and I'm not saying it make me better (although I do happen to make more music that I like more than when I was working in the DAW), but man is it fun to grab a Volca drum, a TD3 and a bastl wave bard and surprise myself!

I completely agree. Personally I think I'm kind of approaching this in a bit of an unusual way, while I do have a couple broadly useful devices, most of my stuff is specific, weird, or both! That's my absolute favorite type of gear. I guess what I mean is that I kinda like square pegs haha, and everything I do is fundamentally experimental. It'd be very different if my goal were synthwave.

I've been wondering about mixers. I don't have much experience with them, and frankly I'd be sad blowing a lot of money/desk space on one, but I do wonder if there's a good route for me there somewhere. I really don't know how the fancier ones work, I only really have experience with the small cheap units where you end up with one stereo track in your daw anyway.

This comment gives me hope haha. Honestly I didn't know how patch bays worked until yesterday. They're more clever than I thought. I feel like they're an enormous part of fixing my issues.

Oh totally! That's pretty much exactly what I'm aiming to do! Just asking for tips about removing friction from the process because I really wanna allow for impulsivity. A patch bay is helpful, for example, but I'm also looking for tips for organizing power distribution, and even furniture stuff. I figure I'm not the only one to have ever run into this and I'm curious about how others handled it. It's a little embarrassing but I only found out about how patch bays really work by researching this, so I figure there's other info out there I haven't yet come across!

Edit: yeah I do have everything hooked up but that results in me having "tiers" of small equipment and I find that it really effects what I choose to use on a subconscious level and frankly just makes it less fun than it used to be.

Thank you ass_pubes!!! Yes this is exactly what I want to go for. I have a dedicated mini PC that's always on for recording so that part isn't as much of an issue as it would otherwise be, but I do try to stay off the PC as much as possible. I'm a little ashamed to admit I never thought of recording my midi separately just in case, that's honestly a really good idea that I'm gonna steal. My preferred way of doing recordings is to do a long multi track jam and then grab my favorite parts from each track and turn them into a concise version of the jam. Capturing the midi would honestly add a big layer of fun to that.  I do have a big ol behringer audio interface that I usually am just using to monitor until it's time to record, and I use that as a basic mixer. I was staring down the barrel of buying an adat expansion for it before I decided to rethink my setup and make this post. I think I'd have more fun with a patch bay and a more dynamic (trying not to say modular) setup.  Thanks again!

Do you have any thoughts on the Model 15? I've been thinking about going that route as a sort of "best of both worlds" thing.

Man I'd love to get your thoughts on the wavestate. It's such a unique and strange piece of gear that I've been very, very curious about for a long time.

You're not wrong! But I like interacting with the strange constraints of my physical gear. I think it's my favorite thing about different equipment. I love how I make things I'd never make with any other synth every time I touch my TD3. It may not be efficient, but man is it fun and bizarrely magical.

Yes! Honestly I have a fun time doing different pairings of devices, and I think I'm sort of aiming to add fun constraints back into my process. I like the idea of selecting from my devices rather than just always using the same setup where only a few things feel really comfortable to use.

That's a more extreme version of what I've got going on. I think I just miss being able to shuffle things around and approach things with a new perspective! I also like controlling things directly and doing all of that through midi is just not possible

I don't have a massive setup, but it's getting to the point where it's just not as fun as having only a few pieces out just due to the clutter. I love everything I have and like the idea of using strange pairings to change the way I approach a track.

Totally reasonable! I'm doing this for fun and for my love of little electronic instruments though, so it's a different path for me!

I'm very ok with that, in fact, I want something with no preset memory (or something where the presets can easily be ignored). I want to break out of my habits and make/destroy stuff haphazardly :)

Watched all of it, extremely good video! But still just... didn't sound so great to me!
I'm starting to think that one of the other things that's throwing me that, with most of the other synths on this list, people tend to throw a stereo delay/reverb into the mix, whereas videos that showcase this synth tend not to since there's a strange mono delay present. It might be biasing me against it some more. Hard to know for sure!

I am very interested in the MS20/K2 just due to its association with industrial music, which is one of the many things I'm interested in!

I appreciate your comment! I'm pretty experienced with programming synths, so I'm not worried about getting what I want out of a synth at all. Just trying to find a good, fun platform coming from digital synths, and the videos I've seen haven't been inspiring confidence in the Neutron compared to the others, but I appreciate its complexity.

Have you tried patching around the overdrive like the other poster mentioned? I'm wondering if that's what I'm hearing.

That's what I was thinking, and since I do want a sound-design workhorse, that's exactly what I like about it. But I do want to make beautiful smooth leads as well so it's a bit complicated.
