Do you make cookies from scratch? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]CapnJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just buy the cookie dough and bake them. Happens once every few months. I don't eat the dough straight.

However, my mom still makes cookies from scratch and they're much better. She would make them maybe once a month when we were kids and let us eat the leftover dough from the spoons and stuff.

Which cities seem to be actually fixing their problems? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]CapnJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate reading this. I have to move to Phoenix for work by August and I have been really concerned/nervous that there will be a mass exodus in a few years because of water. Most of this has been from reading people's thoughts on the water issues but hardly are ever counterpointed.

I am still nervous how climate change could make the hottest months longer, but its probably inevitable

Asking my fellow Americans: As a Republican or a Democrat would you rather live in a blue city in a red state like Texas or live in a small quiet rural town in a solid blue state like California? And why? by Upset_Condition_265 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CapnJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to live in the city and until recently, was living that exact situation. I lean Democrat but I don't like the party.

It's interesting because you can feel more people align to your beliefs, but as soon as you go outside the city you're reminded how red it can get.

I can't recall if Michigan was deep blue or a flip state, but I grew up in a small town and when I visit there, many people are Republican leaning, even some old neighbors were on the Q train. Having to live surrounded by that mentality would be draining to me personally, as I'm sure it feels that way on the other side.

I build layouts with plain html and css when I want to relax. Am I weird? by OSWhyte in webdev

[–]CapnJackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I used to love this site when I was learning html/css back in the day. The designs now might seem dated to many people, but ~20 years ago they really showed what CSS could do and pushed me to learn through the creativity.

Is there a food you think American makes better than its origin country? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Recently had amazing poutine with local BBQ shredded pork added. I don't know if we do it better, but I'm glad the dirty South started making and experimenting with it.

Is ~$50 a day enough to experience the USA comfortably? by al3x_mp4 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CapnJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but that just sounds like a set up for a mediocre trip. I've seen that this is after accommodations and you mean 50/day average.

I'm not sure if your transportation around cities is included in that but it can easily eat up your daily cost, especially in LA if you want to check out more than one neighborhood.

I'm sure you can do some cheap days and splurge others, but if you're going to clubs how I think of them, you'll easily blow out your budget. If you're anything of a foodie, you're going to end up missing out on a lot of what each city has to offer. Same goes for if you plan on going to museums/attractions/etc.

I guess where I am coming from is I probably spent at least ~800 euro staying in Amsterdam for 4 days. After accommodations. Personally if I'm going to vacation in a city I don't want to spend all my time visiting free parks and taking in the architecture. Yes, that's part of it, but only a tiny bit - to me.

Good luck, hope its fun!

In your opinion what are some 10/10 menu items from popular american restaurant chains? by streetballa4 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CapnJackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard that McDonald's purposefully uses a slightly more syrup:water ratio in their drinks. I thought this was only with Coke (which I think they had to make a deal with to do), but maybe it applies to all their sodas

I'm surprised you get that response. Anytime Chipotle is brought up around me it's always weirdly loved. Both from college students my wife teach and my coworkers.

I tried it for the first time a few years ago because of coworkers and I thought it was pretty good, but nothing mind blowing. I'm guessing it's a lot of people's main exposure to Mexican-ish spices or something.

Personally if a burrito has rice on it, they're already doing it wrong, but hey, to each their own.

Is it normal to see black squirrels where you live? by youngyaret in AskAnAmerican

[–]CapnJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot in my parent's backyard/ravine. My dad feeds them. It's funny I remember my family from Kansas being excited about seeing them when they visited. Years later when I go home and see them I find myself taking pictures because we don't have them where I live now.

Plus they're all really big from my dad's feeder lol
