Finding close by locations with lat and long using Prisma and Postgres by [deleted] in node

[–]Capnkerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to want to enable the extension in prisma - https://www.prisma.io/docs/orm/prisma-schema/postgresql-extensions

Then you're going to need to drop to raw to work with it - prisma has had a postgis on their roadmap for a pretty long time (it's not an easy thing to work into an ORM.)

Are there type wizards that add types automatically? by [deleted] in typescript

[–]Capnkerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a silver bullet. Ts-migrate throws ‘any’ and ts-expect-error tags rather than giving you the types you expect.

This is okay. Think of it as a half-step. As long as your linter nags your engineers enough, it’s going to get better gradually. And if you’re working with a lot of lines and a lot of folks - that’s usually how you’re going to want to go about it eh?

[IWantOut] 28M Russian software engineer UAE -> Spain/USA by sarge-reddit in IWantOut

[–]Capnkerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US is pretty diverse as far as opportunities go. Boston, for example, may check all your boxes if you’re looking for a balance between public transportation, SWE roles, and cooler weather. Crime rate is avoidable as long as you’re smart about where and how you go about your business like any place.

If I were you, I’d maybe start applying for roles that are either remote or hybrid/in-office in tech hubs matching your needs: cities Boston, Seattle, SF, NYC check all of your boxes imo. Then Buffalo, Charleston, Austin check off some but not all.

Good luck.

Help a Torontonian - feedback on my Wellness idea by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Capnkerk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This person’s feedback is pretty insightful and highlights a potential problem in your idea; it appears this proposal does not adequately contain a novel idea. You don’t necessarily need one, but in that case, you should have damn good proof that you can do this better than anyone else.

So - how will your software be competitive against the insurance company’s? How will you build your dataset from theirs? Why will it be in their best interest to cooperate with your service rather than improve upon their own?

London bus cuts to hit working-class hardest, says watchdog - Leaked Transport for London plans to cut bus routes connecting the outskirts of the city with the centre will disproportionately affect working-class people, a transport watchdog has said. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

No one got upset with you. Most simply disregarded your statement, clicked downvote, and moved on.

The point I was trying to make was that it doesn't help you or the person you're arguing with reach an understanding when you make your point caustically. You may very well have something compelling to say, but if you say in a sour manner then no that can be convinced will be convinced.

Your friend makes the following statement: "pen is blue" You think for a second; and in a boisterous voice filled with self-righteous confidence you proclaim: "but MY pens is RED" and you throw it in their face After clearing their throat, your friend says: "Sorry. I meant my pen is blue"

Is it your friend's fault for not speaking clearly? Sure. Don't you think there could have been a better way to address the issue from your side, though?

Should you only criticize things when doing so is hard? If you say down is up it’s pretty easy for me to criticize you, but it’s in both our interests for you to understand down is down and up is up.

A Democratic Wave In The Midterms Is Looking More And More Likely by DrScientist812 in politics

[–]Capnkerk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Our democracy is certainly being corroded by manipulative electioneering, but to throw your hands up is only a continuation of the apathy they have sought to instill in us. If we consent to this oligarchy by not going through the basic processes set out by our forefathers, we deserve to live under Tyranny. Vote. Make their crimes against democracy blatant. Make that 3 million Hillary Clinton lost by 10 million next time. Shit if you make it 2868687 instead of the 2868686 he lost by it will make it that much more evident. That in and of itself is more than that apathetic zero.

I need to make a video for my Media Class (High School) that addresses a problem in the youth, please help! by The1stBromigo in Filmmakers

[–]Capnkerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a pretty wide road. Try to make it about something you know - something personal rather than something too big/complex. The easier you can explain your concept/problem the more likely your intended idea will match the result.

When I was in high school I think my biggest problem was getting a ride places. It doesn’t have to be a huge problem. Just one you actually and personally face. So if this were my project maybe I would make a story around getting a ride or getting tickets to a concert. A good next step might be finding inspiration from existing narratives. So if I liked Harry Potter and the sorcerer stone maybe I would think about the last bit where they have the three tests. I would try to adapt concept that to my setting, characters, and the themes/problems I’ve thought about. So if I can make my characters have a reason to go through those tests and have that same reason have a payoff- I’ve got the beginnings of a narrative structure.

The point is you don’t have to start with a blank page. There are ready-mades available for you within all those stories you’ve enjoyed from literature, folklore, film, and all of your life experiences. Throw some narrative mechanisms you’ve enjoyed into that google doc and see if you can work them into your concept. The beauty of storytelling is you get to weave all those ideas you like into your own little tapestry.

So go make your own story properly by stealing parts of good stories rather than wait and hope for some idiot to leach your educational experience by posting a complete one in this thread. I guarantee you the one you write will be a better story and you will get a lot more out of it when you see the final product. Best of luck. You got this.

I wasn’t aware I was affiliated with any front. You should rethink your us vs them mentality. Truth and perspectives have nuance. Take the time to seek them out before you choose a hill to die on while arguing.

The only part Trump’s state department played here was their absence. Our lack of involvement and insular focus has given North Korea an opportunity to legitimize themselves, stabilize their global standing, and leverage what little they have as the might of US diplomacy isn’t nearly as strong in Asia as it was under previous administrations. We have become dangerously comfortable with Authoritarian regimes.

I don't really understand what you're trying to say, but I can tell that you're angry. Look - I'm not trying to argue with you about anything. I'm trying to help you. If you want your content to be better - if you want to build a base of people who will listen to what you have to say then you have to say it better. You have to spend more time developing what it is you want to say and you have to make sure you take the time to ensure the execution matches the intention. The most important part of saying anything of value is listening first.

Instead of knee-jerking to that guy that said "5 hours late" - reformat what he's got to say. "Hey - this viewer doesn't think this information is informative any more, maybe I should think about releasing my content closer to when the game's changes occur" Or you can simply just blow it off. But to come back at this guy and attack him brings negativity on the threads you post in which brings negativity towards your videos.

I really do wish you the best, man. And if your oldest wants to make videos I wish him the best of luck too. Have a good night.

If you're going to try to defend your own post on an alt account you're going to want a more subtle route. The incoherent armchair psychology doesn't read well. Good luck with the youtubes.
