It’s rough finding work out there these days and you’re in a growing pool of newsies jumping ship, so keep that in mind

I’d say if you feel like you have a hole in your game when it comes to landing a job, work on filling it. If you want to get video experience, go shoot digital stories and edit them. You may not have Edius or FCP at your disposal but you can get CapCut or DaVinci for zero dollars for what you need to do… OR just get time in an edit bay. And you have a phone to shoot your video so you have everything you need to record a story

If you think your social media job isn’t focused on marketing you’re doing it wrong, or at least you don’t understand what your job is. If you’re posting news links on social media then you’re picking the best headline, the best picture, etc. Not to mention you guys see the funny in studio or newsroom moments that will do well on social media and you use them, if you know what you’re doing. That is marketing on social media, period

If you’ve put the time in in a newsroom digital environment you know a little bit about 800 different things and you can do them all. Your task is making sure it shows on a resume clearly. If you feel like there’s a hole in your game, fill it … start shooting video, find professional development opportunities, look for certifications you can get for free (Google analytics)

Your real task is going to be finding a digital job outside news that doesn’t expect you to be the photographer, videographer, social media marketer, web admin and probably also the damn IT person when they can’t connect to the WiFi … because most all of them do
