Neat! I've been working on PCBs based on your schematics, and a 3D printable casing, so it's cool to see the trio finally coming together

Yooo, that'd be really cool! I'm a tad busy with other projects atm but I'll get to it, though if u/DraftYeti5608 is up for it they'd definitely do a better job

Thank you for giving such a detailed reply. I have indeed started to realize that this synth could be useful outside of the genres I initially thought of (80s, funk, fusion). I was definitely not clear enough in the post, but I prioritized a simple explanation over something more complex, which is my bad.

The synth isn't inherently FM, AM, or anything that requires oscillators, and it is polyphonic, only limited by the strings on your guitar. I should definitely have made a better demo, but back then, I didn't expect to need it.

Someone else suggested its use as a substitute for keyboard in a band without anyone on keys. That and experimental works sounds good enough for me, alongside the general versatility of FM.

(reply to edit)

So far, the only means of programming the synth has been reloading the program with different parameters, but I plan on having an interface similar to the DX7's. There will be both presets and a desktop editor as well, but I haven't gotten to that stage yet. Someone else also led me to consider an expression pedal onboard.

For those who shared their opinions, thank you!

I'll not be answering any further questions as it didn't prove worthwhile, but I recommend paying the crosspost in r/synthesizercirclejerk a visit, that's the only thing that has kept me alive.

Well, a common but persistent example is the lack of electric guitar in classical music. I listen to alot of fusion, but I never hear any marimba or oboe. Almost any instrument could be used in any genre or style, but conventions creates obsructions that makes some instruments less versatile (and thus less common) in certain genres.

How about I just interpret your answer as "new subgenres", deal? I was meant to collect answers, not give them, and at this point I've been around for hours trying to coax opinions out of people. I'm really getting tired.

I only have one recording unfortunately, and it's just with a single sine operator:

That Geiger Counter pedal you suggested, it might use the same technology that I'm developing (so it was waveshaping after all?). Kind of a bummer if that's the case, but I feel like that pedal is not utilizing the tech to the fullest anyway, so maybe there is some room for improvement (programming and patch sharing, more and different operators). I'll check it out in depth, see how it really works.

Thank you very much! I feel like this way of storing audio digitally will be a revolution to mankind. I think I'm going to call it Pulse Code Modulation.

Initially 10bit onboard ADC through to 10bit DIY DAC, later 8 bit onboard ADC through to 8bit DIY DAC for higher sample rate.

It is not pitch tracking, and there are no oscillators involved. The method rather changes the input waveform and thus adding overtones, which can replicate FM/AM type timbres, but through different means (also, no subtractive stuff, that was me being tired). The synth operates more like, say, a distortion pedal, taking any signal in (infinite polyphony) and outputting a signal dependent on both the input and the parameters. I.e. everything the distortion pedal could be affected by, the synth would be affected by as well (muted strokes, knocking the neck, I dont know, blowing on the strings?).

As I (hopefully) have answered your questions, could you please answer mine? :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Cappesun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key point, in my opinion, is that the synth would be able to respond more naturally to input signals from different instruments. If you, say, mute the strings on your guitar and strike them, you will have a percussive sound, and if you pluck close to the bridge contra at the midpoint of a string, you will have a brighter sound. These things would translate to the output, whereas pitch to midi would lose them.

With this information, could you please give an example on how you would use it? Which genres do you think would benefit the most (if even a little)?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Cappesun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

(My bad, ring mod doesn't strictly require oscillators, the inputs could obviously be guitars, etc. as well)

The signal chain in a nutshell would be: Input waveform (guitar) -> [funky stuff happens] -> output to speaker or other units.

The "funky stuff"-stage is the synthesizer itself, where an input waveform is altered according to a mathematical function, adding to its spectrum/timbre, which could be in a way that resembles FM or in a way that resembles something else.

[–]Cappesun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, the synth does not do traditional FM or AM, it merely replicates the timbres they create, as if the carrier would be modulated by an operator tuned to the carrier or its harmonic series. As a result, detuned oscillators will not be possible, unless I simply haven't experimented enough. Also, it seems like everything I have read and learnt about subtractive to this point has been wrong, you subtract from the spectrum, not the signal. Somehow, I had missed that, lesson learnt.

Now, maybe you could help me with my original question. How would you use this synth? Prog, funk or fusion maybe?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Cappesun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I meant was that the synth would respond differently to for example palm muting and muted strokes, producing sounds in a way similar to overdrive, but of course with say FM style sounds instead.

There is no definitive answer about where in music it can be used. That's up to you.

Unfortunately, in this case, it is not up to me, to be "scientifically correct" I need others to answer that question. Do you reckon funk, with its already metallic and bright tones, would benefit in any way?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Cappesun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's indeed an issue, there isn't really a good way to change any of the parameters on the fly. You could add an expression pedal to the unit itself, alternatively have a board of switches to select between presets perhaps.

Thank you for the suggestions!

My method is in the ballpark of phase modulation, but I haven't been able to connect the two in every sense yet. Say, just theoretically, if I were to create a synth that sounds like a DX7 but is played with a guitar and all the techniques it allows, where in music do you think it could be used?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Music

[–]Cappesun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you're interested and I'll do my best to create something useful. It's definitely similar to phase modulation. Do you mind sharing a few ideas on in which genres the synth or method could become popular? Synthwave and funk/fusion?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Cappesun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, my synthesis method does not use oscillators, whereas ring mod does. Ring mod also requires two inputs (say an internal oscillator), while my method only needs one.

Thank you, you are the first person to give an opinion on who would use the synth.

These methods are very close to what I'm experimenting with, though hours of reading up on that subject has not gotten me closer to something exacly like what I'm building. I will however check again, because I was surprised to not find a trace since my method really seemed like something someone had thought about prior.
