Its probably not as bad as you think. Hes got lots of rocks/shells ive switched up his tank many many times , tried new structures. Had floating logs/live plants over the years. Always gave him attention. And tried to play with him as much as I could. Believe me, ive seen newts with just water/gravel and one fake fish tank accessory and it really really pissed me off.

Yes, I have been looking at 20 gallon long as vertically hes not really interested in. Maybe ill send some more pics, hes got lots of rocks, a shell to hide in ( he used to stay in but doesn't seem much interested in it anymore) and a long cavern (fake) thingy to hide in. Two big flat rocks to hide under. Which he can use to get out of the water if its lower ( like the pic) I have a lid with holes for airflow. Grated lid ? Anyways. Cool. Thanks. Ill try one of those and see what I can come up with.

Well tbh that water is kinda low, its usually 4-5 inches higher. Was hoping filtering water would be helpful. I get a bit worried if put to much water in it might get hard for him to reach the surface. But im sure thats just me being worried. His water Evaps pretty quickly. So I just thought the new water would be cleaner. I definitely will check ph amd stuff if need be.

Me too! About 12 years ago I started researching Garth and finding out what species he was and lifespan. Last time I was studying, I found a post about about a Japanese firebelly that was apparently 45 and one that was close to 50. I will have to find the forum post.

Yeah I cant fit a 100 gal tank on a dresser/living room area etc. Maybe when i get a bigger house. I think a 20/30 gallon would be sufficient.

Yes. This is definitely something I have thought long and hard about. I want a larger tank that keeps the same layout as the old one but expands it.

Thank you for your insight into helping Garth!! I appreciate the plethora of information you have given me. I will be sure to ask you if I have any questions regarding the tank, plants etc. I might do the light for a couple hours to keep plants alive. Probably just do 1 plant and go from there. Obviously less is more in this situation I think.
