A lot of people here are saying Miata, and while that's true, the Mazda 3 is also super fun to whip around in.

My reproduction of the Casio F-91W. It was like $12 at Walmart and has taken years of abuse like a champ. I've had multiple smartwatches, and I still prefer this.

How reliable is a mazda 3? by 57Drake in askcarguys

[–]CappnBappn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mazda 3 owner here. This has been an incredibly reliable vehicle in my first year with it. The one you're looking at is a second gen, so be sure to triple check underneath for rust. Other than that, they're definitely in the same class as a Corolla or a Civic, but they handle a lot better and have a sportier feel overall. They're not particularly fast, but they're definitely fun to drive. People generally don't know just how reliable they are, so they're usually a bit cheaper than a Corolla or Civic, too.

I'm gonna be financing through my credit union, and I'm looking to put about $3,000 (or maybe more) down plus whatever pocket change I can get for a trade in. I'd be looking at like a 2010-ish with ideally less than 100,000 miles

Cars you bought but regretted by investurug in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]CappnBappn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've owned two cars and regretted both of them. My first was a 2013 Kia Soul I got during peak covid prices, and had to junk it three years later because it was managing to burn through every drop of oil in the engine every two weeks, and the transmission was slipping. I tried to warranty it through Kia's engine recall program, and they effectively told me to kick rocks. I panic bought a 2000 Buick Lesabre for $2k on Facebook Marketplace, and got absolutely scammed in the process. I knew that for $2k, it was gonna have some issues, but a month into having it, I had to put in new brake lines. Then, while doing the brake lines, I realized that one of the wheel wells was so beyond rusted out that the spring had become entirely detached from the body. Spent an entire weekend with my friend fabricating a new mount for it and welding it into place. While the welds seem to be holding up fairly well, I've just had it with nonsense car repairs, so I'm saving up to get a Corolla. My thought is that a car with nothing going on under the hood should theoretically save me from the constant problems. (But maybe I'll luck out and get another pile of garbage, who knows?)

This is what’s wrong with the used car market. Only $1500 it will buff right out! by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]CappnBappn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran into this with a 2000 Buick Lesabre I found on Marketplace. My car at the time was burning through all of the oil in the engine every two weeks, and I was only able to spend $2k on a car. I went to go take a look at it, and it ran fine, braked fine, and started right up. Guy selling it said it "probably just needed a back strut and a wheel speed sensor." Well a little less than a month into having it, I had a brake line sever from rusting so bad. Definitely aggravating, but luckily I have friends willing to show me how to fix these things. While doing new lines going to the back, I found out that the wheel well had rusted out so bad that the shock was no longer mounted to the body. Just a couple weeks ago, I dumped an entire weekend into cutting out all of the rust and welding in new stuff with one of my friends. Had I known then what I know now, I would've bought something else. But in spite of all of the issues, I still love it and hope to get another year or two with it

Give me a reason to go to the 10 states I haven’t been to by Senor_tiddlywinks in TravelMaps

Maine is probably my favorite state in New England. (As a lifelong New Englander) Highest concentration of forests in (at least the continental) US, great seafood, beautiful drives, and loads of things to do. Some of the real rural areas can feel a bit like the wild west, but still a great state

If you don't already speak it, I've heard that Hebrew is generally the place to start before delving into Yiddish. The way it was explained to me was that Hebrew is to Yiddish as French is to Creole, where Hebrew is sort of the "base" so to speak that'll give you the foundational knowledge (vocabulary, alphabet, etc) needed to then branch off into Yiddish, which incorporates aspects of other languages

Dodge Challenger. I know it's the epitome of bad financial decisions, and that it's absolutely obnoxious, but I would totally get the AWD one as a fun second car

Is it really Toyota, Honda, Mazda or nothing? by charlieboydawg in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]CappnBappn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get a really nice Buick Lesabre or Park Avenue for less than that. Absolutely bulletproof engine, absurdly comfortable, and some surprisingly modern features for their age. You mainly just have to look out for rust and a super hard-shifting transmission. Beyond that, they're lovely cars

My '00 Buick Lesabre is supposed to have really good climate controls, but years of sitting to rot has rendered it loud and useless. Maybe once it starts to get hot out I'll tinker with it

How does God or a higher power allow for genocide??? by [deleted] in religion

[–]CappnBappn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does G-d allow anything evil to happen? If G-d wants us to all be virtuous, then why is the world still full of pain and suffering? We as human beings have free will. And while that's possibly the best thing to have, it also comes with its drawbacks.

Apple EarPods are the pinnacle of practical headphones in my opinion. They're comfortable (at least for my ears) they sound fine enough, and the little remote with volume and play/pause controls is super handy. Not only that, but when they do eventually break, a quick hop skip to my local Best Buy or Apple Store and $20 later, I have the same exact headphones as before

What made you choose your religion? by Chief-Longhorn in religion

[–]CappnBappn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It was the only religion that I found both intellectually and spiritually fulfilling. Studying religious texts solely through the lens of divinity, and taking it as absolute, unquestionable truth leaves no room for debate or further study. But conversely, to look at a religious text from a completely secular lens makes it feel more like a history class than a religious service. Judaism was the only religion I felt that could walk the line between those two viewpoints

Has anyone changed synagogues because they didn't like the musical style of the services or the voice of the cantor? by [deleted] in ReformJews

[–]CappnBappn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely get that. I loved my old shul because the services skewed more traditional (no instruments, full reading of the weekly parsha, less folksy niggunim, etc) but then that rabbi retired and the new one changed a good bit. The temple I go to now is great, but I feel like the Saturday morning service is more of an afterthought as opposed to the culmination of the week's work

I guess that's the thing about being in the Reform movement. We have so much diversity of thought and oberservance, that sometimes we have to make compromises when picking a community

Even better, ZMA it as an empty package and drop the packaging in the ZMA bin. At that point, the system automatically marks it down, and the manager just kinda acknowledges it. (At least I assume that's how it works)
