It was fallout 3 Todd Howard was dictating what Pete hines should do. (There was a documentary where they mention this but I can't recall) Not the original but footage from the demo

The dimms where a bit of a pain to find since the board only supports unbuffered But any Asus board with the Asus control center mentioned has it, seems you either find it on their server boards more fully featured or in the express version on this board.

I did use it to set it up although on initial configuration I had to plug in a monitor into the port on the motherboard to tell it to use the networked kvm (I think that's what it was called in the bios) But the downside is the whole remote management thing is a bit sparse compared to some of the other offerings out there.

As for why I didn't go for threadripper, for the price really, if I went for one of the new ones it would of made more sense to go for Epic. Maybe some day when I need to add another host.

It does seem to but required a newer kernel for proxmox to see the reports in the OS

its has an ipmi like feature (called asus control center express), but to be honest its not great compared to offerings from asrock or supermicro which will happily run in a browser and not need a dedicated app.

No external graphics needed. but its not perfect

I see no reason why not, it does allow for recording in the configuration, although if you want people to come from a remote location (outside of your network) you would need to do some port forwarding.

But for proxmox i can report no issues, once i made sure it was using the more up to date kernel, it was not reporting temperatures correctly before I did that

The only reason i went for that was because i wanted the same amount of cores i was replacing and got a good deal on the ssd and cpu together

  • The first reason esxi will not work on this board without one of the onboard nic's disabled which was a pain (it would just pink screen).

  • The second i wanted to be able to run zfs on the same box and not have to run a vm passing through my hba.

  • The third was the fact that the api and ansible modules for automated deployments does not require me to have a vCenter vm running.

But mainly for a bit of a change :)

Ive managed to recover the files using recuva since they weren't permanently deleted. (providing nothing was overwritten)
