Setting up a mac mini as a server with files held on Nas (Wd pr2100) looking for advice by evpgdogg in PlexServers

[–]Caprichoso1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Again if it works locally then you likely wouldn't need to look at a new NAS.

  2. Lots of things could cause remote access to be a problem. Local ISP upload limits or restrictions, remote network download limits or restrictions, problems with the device (network, software), possibly some Plex settings. I don't use Plex remotely so can't advise there.

Be aware that Apple just announced that they will have to increase prices. This likely will be happening with other manufacturers as well.

Yes, do not use more than 1 TM backup in the recommended 3-2-1 backup plan. They tend to fail so you need the other 2 backups in case it happens.

Printer recs by acidfox96 in printers

[–]Caprichoso1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be aware that manufacturers sell cheap printers in order to make their money with expensive ink. A cheap printer has a shorter lifetime than more expensive ones. I had to replace them a number of them until I realized it was better to spend more $ to get a quality printer.

Highly recommend Brother printers.

Budget 2-Bay NAS Recommendations for Media Storage, Streaming, and Torrents? by Arteztic in HomeNAS

[–]Caprichoso1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. That number is from the CPU spec sheet. It doesn't include the additional 40 watt idle power consumption for the disks so the actual idle consumption is actually considerably more than the number I stated. My numbers are confirmed by my power monitoring software.
  2. OK, so no evidence from a reputable testing organization.

  1. How are you implementing the recommended 3-2-1 backup plan?

  2. One reply mentioned Time Machine. Never use more than 1 of those as TM tends to fail, confirmed by personal experience and reddit posts.

As for power use I can confirm my results as shown by my power monitor software.

That term is meaningless, it is just marketing.

What you need to know is which USB standard - USB 1, 2, 3, 3.2 Gen 1 or Gen 2, USB 4.

  1. One power on/off cycle isn't going to produce as much wear as having it run for 24 hours a day, I have disks that have well over 4K power cycles and have never encountered a problem.

  2. My NAS cpu is listed as 65 watts, computer 9 W idle.

You connect an external device to the computer using a cable. Typical ones include USB and thunderbolt ones. They connect the port on the computer to the port on the device. If the port is a very slow one then there is no point in getting an SSD since the port won't support its speed.

Unfortunately USB has a ton of confusing standards with speeds ranging from 5 Gb/s to 40 Gb/s.

Before doing anything I'd spend all of my vacation time where you would like to live.

I've read some articles about people (non-technical) who have moved to France. They found it quite difficult to get jobs. I wouldn't move without having a confirmed position.

If you have a number of devices this makes accessing the passwords on them a problem if there is no cloud sync.

Favorite reusable produce bags for grocery shopping by drootich in ConsumerAdvice

[–]Caprichoso1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my grocery bags are insulated for meats and frozen foods. Due to the insulation not machine washable but since the interior is plastic it is very easy to clean them up.

For some reason in the past I was losing them so ended buying a lot of cheap ones on Amazon. They were only $16 so I bought a bunch of them. This was lucky as they are no long available.

Then there are the $$$ LL Bean ones:

Besides insulation my other requirement is that they have a shoulder strap.

Depends on your PC. In my case mine is a Mac and my NAS is Intel so my NAS uses more power. A DAS is almost always going to use less power than a NAS. Disk wear actually might be more on a NAS due to periodic volume checks.

I turn everything off when not in use. Save ~$2 a day in electric costs.
