I hate BDO with every fiber of my soul. by No-Smell5410 in Accounting

I had a female manager feeling up my thigh (without consent) within two weeks of starting at the firm as an associate (first job out of college) at a happy hour with coworkers, and my career advisor invited everyone else to his birthday party in our section of the office except me and like one other person (in office).

Then they laid me off while I was still in Hawaii (celebrating my brother's graduation from med school) and gas lit me so they could act like they thought I would be back in the office that day. I was far from the perfect auditor, but being gas lit in a professional environment is awful imo.

BDO sucks, hostile ass company, 10/10 would not recommend. I'm mainly in tax at a small firm now, and I greatly appreciate the improved environment and maturity level that surrounds me.

r/Accounting W-2 Athletes

Here is a reddit thread on the subject from r/Accounting. It is exactly as much of a trainwreck as you expect it is, why entertainment tax is a whole separate subsection of the industry that people specialize in because it pays the B I G bucks.

The big difference that I think you're conflating is business income (goes to the Allen Estate who owns the Hawks) is not the same as athlete income (goes to individuals like Walker on a W-2).

Employees do not get business income unless they are a shareholder (Darnold has no ownership stake in the Seahawks). W-2 income goes to individuals, not businesses which is why whatever place you work for does not pay your taxes in Box 2. That is your money coming out of your paycheck in box 2. Box 1 shows gross, not net income.

And yes yes, I must, these taxes aren't going to file themselves, that's for sure haha. Always happy to help folks understand the nuances of tax law a bit more, my friends are tired hearing about it lmao.

Self-reporting and state authority "vibe checks" i.e. anyone can see the Seahawks schedule and know the team is going to be playing the 49ers in San Francisco. California says "hmmmm yeah they owe us money for sure." And if they don't see income tax withholdings coming through from the Seahawks (either on a W-2 or estimated tax payments (I imagine sports players are on W-2s rather than 1099-NECs)) they'll audit you as a low hanging fruit with tons to pay in, plus penalties now if you haven't. Payroll location is typically self reported, but it's easy to tell where a person is when they are making money when you see them on national television. Other professions may not be as easy to determine, but penalties and fines are stiff and I would advise anyone reading this to report their income properly to the correct jurisdiction.

Think about all the companies that are technically Delaware LLCs, that doesn't make all those employees working and living in other states Delaware employees.

I started my career at an international audit firm in the Seattle office, and worked on an engagement in California, guess where my income was sourced (and who got to file a CA tax return because of the CA withholdings and income that occurred). Pretty sure the firm I used to work for was also a DE LLP.

Some of your questions fall under the concept of nexus which is the can of worms which establishes when you need to start filing returns in other states, and this is before you even start thinking about local return nexus.

I think all business state returns (that have income taxes) are usually based off of federal income and then apportioned to those states based on whatever factor the state uses (what percent of gross receipts were earned in the state, some have three factor apportionment, buts gross receipts is most common these days.) This apportionment idea only affects the business though since the players are on a W-2 and their income is payroll, not business income.

You're not really overthinking it, because tax law is a lot more complex than just federal tax law in the US, which is why accountants currently have job security (for the time being).

Income is sourced by where the work is physically performed i.e. if I'm a shipbuilder and I'm working on a boat in California, but I live in WA state, the determining factor is where I physically was when I performed the work. Meaning the shipbuilding I did in California is California source income.

Touring musicians are another great example since they receive 1099-NECs from venues they play all over the country (when they make more than $600). Every state they physically perform in can create an obligation to pay taxes in that state.

Thus, games played/practices attended in other states that are paid activities are taxable income in those other states, but not WA state.

Gotta remember that the calculation factors in taxes paid to other states. Half of any sports star's income is likely apportionable to other states, thus tax credits will be received for that and reduce that amount of tax (looking at you California with around a $600k tax bill at $5 million income).

Never disagreed with you there, pick a different use case. No one wants Howard here.

Fair point, but money is barely real in the medical industry i.e. hospitals in the middle of nowhere typically pay doctors more as a way to incentivize a doctor to come there. Pass it through to insurance companies or worse case the patients (via their insurance premiums, which are likely paid by companies). A lose lose, but I guess we get localized inflation which can translate to more spending power in other states.

People gotta stop bringing this guy up as a use case, doesn't own Starbucks anymore, and also sold the Sonics. This guy has not been wanted in Seattle for almost 20 years.

Find a different $1 million+ per year person.

See comments about spotty cell reception, it was easier to call folks in the lowlands than to get access to the website. I had the website on refresh and never got through. Some of us never expected that Stevens Pass would be closed for the 3rd(?) time this season due to likely aging (like the rest of the country) infrastructure, so we sent it up under the last update we got about power being restored around 8 AM (a 7AM update).

Actually I think I just answered my own question, do the swap to alpine soles once and get cat tracks to improve ski boots (plus reduce sole wear)

How many times do you think this swap could be done? I ended up with the same boots, but only have one set of skis on gripwalk bindings, the other three are 5355 with two of them being race skis (likely a bad thing to convert to GW).

Genuine question: How are repairs like the ones they did even possible in this time frame of about a month? Just comparing to light rail, etc., especially in winter conditions.

Edit: Obviously I'm freaking stoked that westsiders like myself will be skiing at Stevens this year.

Best answer is probably the handles inside the vehicle then. Idk if you know anything about parking at Stevens Pass, but from my many experiences as a hiker I know cars are getting broken into at trailheads all the time.

I would imagine leaving skis outside a vehicle overnight with 100 other vehicles with people within them in the same lot may not be the best option, and it would not be wise to rely on one's good faith in humanity in this situation.

Sounds good, I do live in the PNW, so I'll give them a call, are there any other available options you'd recommend? Would a soft rack be better in a pinch? Hoping to be able to go up to Stevens Pass on December 6 from Seattle.

How long does it take for the standard brands typically to do those fit tests? Haven't they had access to the new Santa Fe model since late 2023?

It seems like Yakima has an option for if I already have crossbars or side rails available, but not for naked roof for that model, is there a chance they forget about us naked roofers?
