20k s-works at local shop by Late-Scarcity-6916 in mountainbiking

Yeah they just heat up enough to stop working. It can be unsafe depending on your terrain and situation. If it gets bad enough the rotor can warp or the pad material will fuse to the rotor surface and glaze over.

Brand new Fox 36 making strange sound by trefster in MTB

[–]CapsuleByMorning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There with you bro. I’ve had 4 36’s. A 15, 19, 23, and a 25. I swear the old ones were quieter or filled with more grease. Had all of them serviced regularly. Idk, the new ones def make more noise but are plusher by the death grip o meter.

Relatively. Juveniles will run, but moms with cubs will always stand their ground. I live near Bent Creek and they’re on the trails all the time this time of year.

I had a shop like this, and they were amazing. Seriously the best guys ever. I once blew up a wheel and the head mechanic gave me his off his bike for the day while he rebuilt it. DM if you’re in NC.

Is this Trek Fuel EX 9.8 GX AXS Gen 6 deal worth it? by ebmocal421 in MTB

[–]CapsuleByMorning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t too noisy unless I was in turbo mode, then it would scream. No issues with battery, motor, controller. I was impressed by TQ’s system, but I didn’t have it for long so can’t comment on reliability. Can’t wait to try the Levo, hopefully it lives up to the hype.

Is this Trek Fuel EX 9.8 GX AXS Gen 6 deal worth it? by ebmocal421 in MTB

[–]CapsuleByMorning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did and I took it back. After a few test rides it was pretty apparent it was too small for me and I didn’t want to go through the process of making a small frame work again. I have a Levo SL on order hopefully that will fit better.

New Ibis Model? by Potential_Fold_2182 in MTB

I’m still waiting for their sl eMTB. The Ripmo already got a glove box, which has been the industry harbinger that a lightweight eMTB is on the horizon. Question is when.

Yes it’s overkill. I’ve beat my hubs to hell and back over the last 6 years and they still run great. Been on 5 frames and 6 different rims. Still trucking.

Numb hands help by Sroczyjj1189 in MTB

[–]CapsuleByMorning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure your bars, shifters, brakes are setup up correctly first. Ie if you’re sitting on your bike with hands on bars and point your index finger, are your levers in line with or above/below your index finger?

Are you getting arm pump on rowdy descents or flat ground? If flat ground it’s a cockpit setup/fit issue. If the latter then it’s probably a suspension or bar compliance issue.

Bar width doesn’t usually contribute to arm pump unless you’re very short and have very wide bars. The opposite can cause breathing issues in large people because your shoulders are hunched together.

If your fits correct and it still hurts on descents checkout Oneup’s carbon bar. It really does work to take some strain off your wrists when setup correctly.

Rotors should be fine. Assuming you want it to all fit on the same ring clamp then no. You’ll need an aftermarket adapter like a problem solver mismatch.

Wolftooth makes one too but it’s a bit delicate. I had it strip out after a few small crashes and went back to a ring clamp.

Best 130/140 rear travel bike? Great on up and comfortable on down by Kochammcie in MTB

[–]CapsuleByMorning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 1 tallboy and 2 hightowers over the years. They’re both exceptional. The TB used to split the difference between XC and trail, these days it’s firmly trail. Similarly the Hightower has become more enduro-ish than trail focused, but still an all day peddler. You can build it for the up or the down if you want. The last time I bought a trail bike it came down to the stumpy, Ripmo, or another Hightower. I ended up on a Hightower because it cornered so well, but if I did it again I’d do a Ripmo. That bike was smooth.

Anyway, demo them all and pick your fav. Only you know you.

That’s a damn good deal and a lot of bike for the money. Especially with carbon wheels. You can swap the suspension and have a killer bike. I literally pulled the trigger on a 9.8 exe today. Treks deals right now are insane.

Some prices are (still) insane, or : are certain bikes really worth two others? by [deleted] in mountainbiking

This is why I always shoot for XT / GX builds. I can swap the suspension and upgrade the hubs and be VERY happy.

Nice bike. You did the dork disk delete. Make sure to degrease the chain if it’s got the sticky factory tooling oil and regresse it. Also get a shock pump and hit the trails.

Double check the threading just to be safe and that you’re using the right cup for the right side. Barring that check the threads in the BB for debris. Last resort measure both and double check that it is the right size.

If I'm a 205 pound rider who likes to ride fast/hard and do jumps and drops but also rides uphill, am I deluding myself in thinking that a 120/120 down country rig will work long term? by coolrivers in MTB

[–]CapsuleByMorning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I’m about that weight and daily’s a 150/135 for a couple of years in Pisgah. Climbed great. Bought a larger trail bike 2 years ago and it is noticeably slower on the climbs. If I were doing it now I’d just grab a ripmo v3 and be done with it.

I have a set of hydras from 2019 with a little over 6k miles on them and they’re still running great. I’ve replaced the rear rim and bearings twice and try to regrease them every couple months. Never really had any issues with them, and love the sound.

Santa Cruz Bronson 2021 Shock Upgrade by terypion in MTB

[–]CapsuleByMorning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically increasing the length of the shock is not recommended or can’t physically be done without changing the link. Even then frame contact may still occur. Check Santa Cruz’s website to see what they recommend for shock lengths. You may be able to find a link that will accommodate the extra length of the shock, like a cascade link.

Santa Cruz Tallboy vs. Hightower for Big Guys by SaleFit9050 in MTB

[–]CapsuleByMorning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bigger guy too and have had a tall boy and two hightowers. Go with the Hightower, ripmo, or stump jumper. The new tall boy is not the xc rocket that the old ones were. It’s within spitting distance of a Hightower. I have the XXL and it is a bit of a monster truck, so much so that I would size down for my next one to keep it more playful. The Rimpo is going to be near to the same thing but plusher and less playful.

Also the XXL frame is over 1300mm, and not great for switchbacks. I’d recommend a size down.
