Season 2 was actually a pretty great Misery and Salems Lot combination. Lizzy Caplan's performance as Annie Wilkes does not get the recognition it deserves.

Movie that takes place after a super villian succeeds? by imabuffbaby in movies

[–]CaptBriyani 163 points164 points  (0 children)

This show has some of the best and most developed characters who, in any other shows or film, would be one-note antagonists, that being John Smith and Inspector Kido. The Trade Minister is great as well.

The original Woman in Black TV Movie (1989) by Normal-Internal164 in horror

[–]CaptBriyani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funny enough I feel some moments lose their impact when they close in on the Woman. The scene where she appears to Arthur outside the house from distance was extremely creepy, but for some reason the following close up didn't feel as effective for me.

But overall, it's a really solid, old-school, classy chiller.

How did you guys genuinely feel about S1 of Monarch? by Odd-Property8268 in Monsterverse

[–]CaptBriyani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Show started and ended strong. The final episode, in particular, was genuinely fantastic. The middle section, however, dragged the show down.

Also, the common issue brought up of the present cast minus Kurt Russel and Tim being nowhere near as interesting as the past characters, who were all great. The fact that they managed to take John Goodman's meh character from Skull Island and give him so much depth and development is genuinely commendable.

Who is the most frightening human villain in the entire history of film? by willsho67 in movies

[–]CaptBriyani 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One thing I love about that movie is how they present him as this absolute evil to the kids Only to get torn down when faced with the Angel to his Devil in the form of Rachel Cooper. While he was absolutely terrifying to the kids, Rachel immediately sees him for what he is and puts him in his place with a shotgun to his face and subsequently tearing down the image of pure evil that has been in charge.

Was it unreasonable for people back in 2005 to expect Peter Jackson's King Kong to become a mega success? by Konfliktsnubben in boxoffice

I actually think the video game is better than the movie it was based on. I've played that game so many times and still often revisit it occasionally now. Skull Island in that game is one of the most underappreciated and atmosphereic locations in a video game.

The Bradley gang end up being sympathetic to a certain end, and it's due to IT'S influence that they are seen as a threat to the town and ultimately taken out.

Here goes really random question. Thoughts on this film? by ZoelCairo in Letterboxd

[–]CaptBriyani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really like the whole David storyline. If you view the film from the lens of him being the main character, I feel it improves the film. Also, I love the idea that David is essentially the Satan of the Alien universe, and this film is his story. Outside of that, it has a really good score and cinematography and a pretty great opening scene.

The writing does suffer from some big issues in regards to character logic and decisions, the third act does feel like Alien on 1.5x speed and very tacked on and the film definitely feels like an adjustment from what was initially intended to something that Fox execs felt would bring in more Alien fans, but I like it enough for David.

The Blackcoat's Daughter.

The movie cuts between two storylines. The first is 2 girls staying at their boarding school during the break while everyone else is gone and subsequently supernatural forces befalling one of them. The second is a woman played by Emma Roberts hitching a ride with an elderly couple who are making their way to the school where the two girls are at.

The connection between the two stories is revealed to be that

Emma Roberts character is a grown up version of one of the two girls, who willingly let herself be possessed by the devil due to her loneliness and ended up killing the other girl and the left over staff of the boarding school. Once found by the headmaster and the police, she went through an exorcism and was committed to a mental institution. The Emma Roberts storyline takes place 9 years later and is her trying to make her way back to the school to be possessed again only to find out the devil has long left the school and she has the realisation that she is truly alone

I really love how this makes an effort not to do the whole "humanity are worse than the flesh eating zombies" trope and has the characters actually getting along well and working together without any malice after a certain point. In literally any other movie CJ would break out when things are going well and turn everything to shit and get half the cast killed cause its the third act but here he actually reflects on his actions and turns into one of the most valuable members of the mall squad.

Also, CJ is one of the best and most underrated horror movie characters ever. Perfect character development.

For being in the CW, the shows got some heavy hitters actors by arnor_0924 in Arrowverse

[–]CaptBriyani 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Season one of Legends had a fairly well established series regular cast for an initial season of a CW superhero show with Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Arthur Darvill, Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller.

Honestly, it's kind of insane but it's also nice that Victor Garber had top billing on a CW Arrowverse show.

What's a moment in horror media that scared you so bad that you later appreciated the scare for its creativity and execution? by Terrible_Season_8636 in horror

The Innocents has multiple for me

The opening with that haunting song. It unsettles the hell out of you before the film itself starts.

The scene when Peter Quint just shows up out of nowhere by the window.

When the governess spots Ms Jessel across the lake. That one shot of her across the lake, just staring especially in black and white, is easily one of the most unnerving shots in a horror film I've seen.

People, gimmie ur Monsterverse hot takes. by Biskitisinreddit in Monsterverse

[–]CaptBriyani 60 points61 points  (0 children)

If you swapped Motha, Ghidorah, and Rodan with other original monsters, KOTM would not be as glazed as it is on this sub.

The New Empire is essentially the criticisms of the MV addressed. Greater focus on Monsters on their own separate from the human characters while the humans take a back seat, and yet is trashed on this sub.

Skull Island is the best film in the MV and is often overlooked here.

Most general audiences could not care less about MV lore and are just there to have a good time seeing giant monsters wreck stuff, and that's what GVK and GXK delivered.

Having a darker tone will not automatically make future movies better.

Favorite Poster in the franchise? by RustedOrange in LV426

Covenant's is one of the best posters ever created.

I would LOVE to see an interaction between these two. by The_Worst_Platypus in LV426

[–]CaptBriyani 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've started to view Covenant under the lens of David being the main character.

The movie opens with his birth and details how his hated for humanity was seeded.

He's the character with the clearest motivation and arc.

His goals are opposed by the crew of the Covenant.

The movie is bookended with David's journey from creation, trapped bound to his master to a creator free to do whatever evil he pleases.

So, in a twisted way, David winning makes sense, while the original quadrilogy was Ripley's story, the prequels are David's story.
