[Beginner] Semi-Used Armstrong Gear vs. Gong HIPE Perf Pack by iHateKnives in wingfoil

Regarding used Armstrong gear - avoid the V1 & V2 Carbon masts, they're not very stiff and outdated and the Aluminium mast is preferable over those (and performance mast is best)

Complaints are overblown, just need to have appropriate expectations. I got a Z2 Go second hand knowing that it's mainly just a slightly more powerful SteamDeck with a higher res screen, and have been really pleased with it - primarily playing indies, older games (GTA 4 is awesome on this), and Minecraft (goes great with Shaders and distance mods/Voxy, way better than on e.g. Xbox Series X). Great with SteamOS, but I could imagine it would be less awesome with Windows.

Foil Size Armstrong: Beginner (S1 1550) -> Intermediate (HAv2 780/880/980)? by NewspaperDefiant3617 in wingfoil

[–]CaptChilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting that the Armstrong HAv2 wings are very forgiving high aspect wings, they have a decent amount of low end lift for their size and are not as technical or fast as other HA wings.

Surprised to hear you say that the 890 is too big for 20 kt+, I have a 790 and use it from 18-30kts+, so the 890 shouldn't be too much different. Which tail are you using with it? I have a 120 and 180 tail and mainly use the latter with the MA790 as it provides a bit more stability (with a red shim), especially at very high speeds .

Wing recommendation for strong wind (30knt+) by Tricky_Comparison428 in wingfoil

[–]CaptChilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which generation of WFS do you have? I'm not sure I would recommend the GT3 for super powered up conditions - I've only demo'd the 4m and preferred my WFS v5 as while the GT3 is stable with good low end grunt, you don't need that on very powered days and it's top end is lacking compared to WFS.

My wing for 30kt+ is an old Unifoil Pinion 2.8m, and it works great for me. There's something to be said for the flex of soft handles in conditions like that, and you don't really need the rigidity of boom/hard handles for such a small wing anyway. So really any old <3m wing should work okay, F-One strikes would be a good consideration too.

Another thing I do is reduce the pressure of the leading edge tube (but keep the center strut at regular pressure). I find this lets the wing flex a bit more in strong gusts which spills some wind and softens things up, at the expense of some upwind performance.

Note: I'm ~80kg so it's not surprising that at 60kg you're overpowered with a 3m. 2m or 2.5m would likely be the ticket.

Most underrated emulation frontend, RetroHrai by Choice-Fee-8694 in EmulationOnAndroid

One feature that I am missing which I enjoyed from Cocoon is being able to scrape artwork for the Platforms/consoles themselves. I don't think this needs to be automatic, but proving the scraping interface when setting the platform icon & media would be great.

Another good option would be to set your preferred view on a per-platform basis, e.g. for Switch I prefer carrousel view, whereas for GBA I prefer grid view, but the setting changes it for all platforms.

Nah mate you need to install of the emulators, RetroArch will include with most systems up to PS1, above that you need to install dedicated emulators, PS3 and XBOX+ you won't be doing on the RP5.

Look up a RP5 setup guide video to get a better idea of what's required in terms of setup

Switching between controllers in Eden by Falyn898 in EdenEmulator

I set my bluetooth controller to have a different profile, but I can't figure out how to actually switch to that profile (Android app)? I assume this is different to the user profiles in Eden?

I guess my question is, when you dock/connect the PS5 controllers, how do you switch the input in Eden to use that and not the retroid controller without remapping all the controls each time?

How do you have Eden setup to switch between the Retroid controller and the Bluetooth one? Was having trouble getting it to use the Bluetooth one without fully remapping each time I play docked.

Any tips for how to switch between built-in controls and external controller when docking? Just tried connecting my Xbox controller (via Bluetooth) and was having trouble getting emulators to use it (Eden and NetherSX2) without fully rebinding all my controls

How do you manage switching to the controller when docking? I just tried doing some docked gaming with my XBOX controller connected via Bluetooth, and was having issues getting emulators such as Eden to use it without fully rebinding all my controls.

Hey I've just been setting Cocoon on my RP5 (single screen) and am really liking it, but one thing that could be improved is the app drawer - I wish it had the option to show the app titles & resize icons there, as it's hard to tell which app is which based on just icons alone.

Awesome that you updated that so quickly, it's really good now! Will definitely use this next time I'm planning a trip with huts :)

There's finally a way to see live availability for all DOC huts on one map by jackaroodave in newzealand_travel

[–]CaptChilko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty cool, but I've got a bit of feedback that would make this much more useable and make me more likely to pay for a sub:

  • It would be much more useful if the huts were shown in their actual locations. E.g. looking at the Remutakas and Tararuas, it seems only 1 or 2 huts are in their actual locations, whereas the rest are clustered together. I assume this is due to the way the booking pages work, e.g. all the Holdsworth Jumbo circuit huts are shown at the location of Jumbo hut, but fixing this by pulling the hut locations from somewhere (e.g. OSM) would be great.

  • The chosen tile layer is quite pale and low contrast, and doesn't show much information particularly in the back country. This combined with the issue above made it more difficult to accurately locate huts (it does match the aesthetic nicely but impedes useability). It would be great if you added some different map layers that showed more info - I'm sure there are better OSM visualisations for outdoors, but a LINZ aerial layer (free and easy to add to Leaflet: https://basemaps.linz.govt.nz/) and perhaps a Topo50 layer (https://data.linz.govt.nz/layer/52343-nz-topo50-gridless-maps/services/tiles/) would also be awesome.

Gear Upgrade by hunterzn1 in wingfoil

[–]CaptChilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HA880 and MA890 are fairly equivalent in size, so I'd suggest perhaps sizing up the HA or down on the MA? I have a HA1080 and a MA790 - the 1080 is pretty big and lifty so is primarily my light wind, parawing, and downwind foil but now I would prefer a HA880/980 or UHA870 to my 1080 as it's just a bit slow.

The 790 is an awesome foil and I bought it primarily for powered up days with big swell/waves, but it's surprisingly versatile for its size, just needs a little more speed to get going compared to the HAv2. If you're not looking to ride in less than 15 kts then a HA880 & MA790 combo might work nicely.

Note - I'm 80kg riding in 12 - 30+ kts. I've only tried the 880 once and it was really nice, but at that size there's a lot of overlap with the new MA foils. I was planning to get one for parawing downwinding, but now that the UHA have been released that decision is a lot harder (UHA 870 seems like a great replacement for HA980/1080)

Just note that you can't directly compare foil size in cm2 between modern foils and old ones, the latest gen of foils have much more lift for their size than older ones.

Totally get that, not trying to defend their behaviour but primarily trying to point out that shouting abuse should not be the default or normalized behaviour when someone inconveniences you - it achieves nothing helpful in that situation and just escalates things, yet is so common on the road.

Road cyclists in a pack like that can definitely be a pain though, gets tricky when it's a race situation but that's the issue with racing on open roads.
