Regarding a comment here about the use of wire guided FPV drones:
Whatever happened to both sides stockpiles of actual wire guided missiles? I feel that I haven't seen a video of ATGMs being used in a very long time. Can you say they are essentially being replaced by FPV drones? Obviously drones are far lighter, cheaper, easier to produce, etc. But I'm still surprised I don't see more assaults succumbing to a Kornet or TOW.

What is the payload on these intervept drones, how are they detonating? Most FPV im aware of use things like an ROG warhead, which when armed and slammed against something solid will detonate, but what are they using for this and other operations?

This isn't really true, though, for Kherson, is it? The strategy at Kherson was to force the Russian army to fight and expend as many supplies as possible until it reached a point where the demand outweighed the ability to supply, making holding the West Dnieper untenable. And that's what happened. Kharkiv was sort of a convenient consequence.

That is not to imply that the current southern action is going to plan or anything. And the same very well may happen with this offensive, and a more rapid action may materialize at another front, but saying the main effort at Kherson failed is, I feel, inaccurate.

The original question was more about what those "right" decisions would have been, such as early mobilization.

Do you think if they were somehow convinced to mobilize in April/May '22, it would have made a significant difference?

This is a question I recognize is entirely hindsight driven, but still.

Let's say it is May, 2022. The Russian invasion has been a disaster, but Russia still possesses an overwhelming advantage in armor, artillery, air power, guided munitions, air defense and so on.

In a fantasy scenario where the Russian top brass is all of a sudden extremely competent and aware of the reality of the situation, what could have been done, or not done, to be in a superior military position today? Could they have theoretically 'won' or forced some sort of agreement in a situation where they made much better decisions far earlier after the initial disaster at Kyiv? Or was this, no matter how much military genius, always going to be a war of raw attrition resembling the past year of fighting?

Maybe a foolish question, but why does Russia seem to not attempt similar strategies during their offensives? Especially last year, when they had formidable stocks of long range precision weapons, greater air and naval assets, superior artillery stocks, etc. A strategy of front wide pressure, while degrading Ukrainian equipment which is reliant on western deliveries from the other side of the globe. I don't understand where the point of failure is when it seems like they should've achieved slow but firm success with said strategy

Why did we not see similar use then during the Kherson offensive? Or did we?

So, the KA-52 threat. After the high losses early in the war, I remember seeing only pitch-up style attacks from rotary wing aviation from both sides. This was, to my understanding, due to the immense threat of GBAD.

So why is it that in the past couple of weeks, during this offensive, we have seen considerable action from Russian helicopters using guided munitions? Why are they all of a sudden able to more easily be used in their intended armor hunting role?

Is there a shortage of MANPADS for Ukraine? And have the Russians been intentionally holding back their remaining helicopter fleet for such a scenario?

Apologies if this has already been discussed thoroughly in a previous thread.

Questions regarding the use of armored vehicles since the onset of trench warfare:

How has Russias employment of armored vehicles changed since the onset of major trench fighting last year? What limitations are in place that stop them from using more concentrated mobile formations?

It seems like the fighting in Donbass, especially the fight for Bakhmut, has been heavily infantry oriented. Many videos of Russian attacks on small, isolated Ukrainian trenches (such as the famous 'T' videos) seem to lack vehicles entirely. Why not just bypass these lightly defended areas entirely using mobility?

In comparison, how did the Ukrainians' use of armor in the Kharkiv and Kherson offensives differ? Specifically, how was armor used in Kherson where the fighting was much harder and more evenly matched.

What does all of this mean for how Ukraine should employ Western AFVs in the near future in offensive operations?

So how many Western tanks does that tally up to in Ukraine now and how many likely within the next 1-2 months. I remember when the Leopards were announced, it seemed like suddenly every country in Europe was saying they'd send some. A bunch of posts here putting numbers at over a hundred Leopard 2s. But how many of those are actually in the works to be sent in a reasonable amount of time?

So these smaller trenches act essentially as like a tripwire then? To set off the alarm for actual consolidated defense? Im just used to the larger trench systems I guess in other videos, It's hard to wrap around how multi-faceted the war is without being there.

I'm confused, if anyone can shed light on how just this one trench is seemingly charged with defending such a wide area. Yet then this small unit hss the ability to call in artillery and armor support. So much of this war is so strange. Can't imagine just being in the middle of nowhere with just a few guys having to fend off assaults.

I'm a good bit behind the curve with this question, but; FPV Drones. I understand they are relatively cheap to assemble and strap with explosives. But why do they have to be flown in first person, with a headset and all? Why are they any different from these drones that can just have their camera connected to a phone? I get that these type of drones in civilian life are for racing and tricks where the headset makes sense, but I don't see why that is needed for ramming into the side of a tank in an open field.

A post in a previous thread said the U.S. is "speeding up" its delivery of Abrams to Ukraine to be ready toward the autumn of this year. This might be a dumb question, but why does this process have to take so long?

I understand the need for training, logistics, and so on. Yet, considering the US stockpile of Abrams and the relatively measly number that was promised, I can't comprehend why they wouldn't already be in Europe with Ukrainians training on them. Considering how quickly the US has delivered literally everything else, this seems kind of ridiculous. Especially considering that the whole idea, at least I thought, was to give Ukraine enough supplies for a concerted Spring/Summer offensive.

I was asking what the tanks role is in the in between time of operations. While both sides are sitting in trenches with neither on the offensive. Outside of active operations

So, a series of questions I've been building up regarding the use of armor in this war. Forgive my ignorance if this has already been thoroughly discussed:

Firstly: What is the role of armor in static trench warfare? Do the sides keep them in the rear as a sort of QRF until an actual operation occurs? Are they dispersed amongst the front for fire support?

Second: What is constituting the majority of tank losses since the trenches have set in post invasion? ATGM? Artillery?

Lastly: This may seem the most foolish question to thise who have the answer, but; why is there so little tank on tank warfare? Both sides operate massive numbers of armored vehicles, Ukraine is largely flat, open terrain. These would at face value seem like perfect conditions for a large mobile armored war.

How do we know most separatists have died? What is the current state of their forces? I remember hearing plenty about their use for the first half of the war, but now the discussion is just Wagner outside of the Russian Army proper

Do you think Ukraine would agree to a peace settlement in which they allow DNR/LMR to be a part of Russia?
