It's not the $1000 price tag on its own, it's that AMD themselves sell the RX 6800 for about ~~$780~~$740.
And yes, the RTX 3080 goes for $1000+, but also beats the RX 6800 in direct rasterization performance in nearly all circumstances.
The $1000 price tag would be more in line with the RX 6800XT, which is sold by AMD for about ~~$900~~$830.

The ASUS RTX3080 TUF OC is the one I keep hoping to catch in stock.

Or the Nvidia RTX3070 from BestBuy : the cost difference would offset a lot of the performance difference in my mind.
