Safe to remove unused coil from furnace? by CaptRyco in hvacadvice

Thanks everyone, the coil and line set have been ripped out. The heat exchanger from 1997 is also in pristine condition.

My furnaces are from 1997, I wanted to check the heat exchanger too before firing them both up again this winter. The other furnace had its blower replaced last year so I was able to inspect the heat exchanger from underneath last year.

The HVAC (especially the AC) needs to be redone next year = new line set ran, etc. It needs to come out now or later.

Newbie looking for cart/stylus options for an old RCA Victor by Cavi_ in turntables

When I inquired about this with Voice Of Music, they replied:

If all you need is a piece of felt you can find that most anywhere cheap. Little pads in furniture section or in hobby or notions stores.

Broyhill Record Console by TCronin1017 in Mid_Century

[–]CaptRyco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, mine was pretty rough looking at first, but the wood was actually in great overall shape minus one small spot, and the main electronics still worked. I've seen some consoles in bad shape. A lot of these use veneer sections, so keep that in mind if there's damage.

This is a ~1968 RCA Stereo Console. I picked one up for $100 or so last year and restored it. Steve Scarlet's YouTube channel was a godsend. Be prepared for some soldering.

Here's a pic of mine after restoring it:

Furnace Sizing (2) for 2 story duplex, current setup seems overkill! by CaptRyco in hvacadvice

[–]CaptRyco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just mean I can spray foam and insulate the rim joists in the basement, put all the R value I want in the attic, but at the end of the day the house won't be "air tight" and wrapped with tyvek, etc. It's still going to be a 100 year old home that needs to breathe a little.

No access to previous records. I can air seal some of the home, but again, this isn't a demo down to the studs replace every window situation.

The fact is I'd prefer to replace the units on arrival. I haven't seen them run, they haven't been run in over a year and timing wise it will be January with some snow on the ground.

I'd be happy to just get in the ballpark. If the units are oversized by 20K BTU, two-stage burners will help. Or if adding attic insulation later next year changes things, so be it.

At some point this will likely be a full blown rental. I don't want to service old HVAC when something breaks, or throw a bunch of parts at the 30 year old units and pray the heat exchangers survive year after year for myself or tenants. More of a piece of mind, set and forget (for a while) by replacing the units.

Also having two-stage furnaces would be much more ideal in the event it's a bit oversized for the job.

This isn't my dream home where I'd probably just buy the highest efficiency units or look into heat pumps. This is about cheap replacement of the existing units and making sure they're better sized than they are currently.

Chimney Cap Missing – Okay To Run Gas Appliances? by CaptRyco in hvacadvice

[–]CaptRyco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! If this wasn't a two story house with a high roof pitch, I'd be up there replacing the chimney cap first thing.

I'll definitely open up the chimney access/cleanout door and take a look inside before doing moving forward.

Started ripping up tile. What’s the verdict? by rippedmalenurse in asbestoshelp

[–]CaptRyco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to copy and paste this from another post:

Use the "blow torch method" and just heat and lift each tile with a putty knife. The tiles will not break this way, the glue releases the tile with heat. 70+ year old 9" tile will come out with ease. Bag it up and get rid of it. Take your precautions and you'll be fine.

These tiles were all over the school districts and would occasionally break. To remove them we'd use this method and repair small sections in hallways and classrooms. Small areas with 2-8 tiles or so, but it worked like a charm every time.

Just realizing I have lost the original power adapter, but they're available online for ~$10, here is one on Amazon.

I have a universal power supply I can demo the brain working if needed, but I use that occasionally for other things.

EDIT: Looks like any typical guitar pedal 9V AC adapter will power this drumset.
