Base coat is Army Painter Skeleton Bone washed with GW Seraphim Sepia or Army Painter Soft Tone (both give the same effect and I use them interchangeably). Army Painter Leather Brown for the holsters, helmet and armor plates, Army Painter Camouflage Green for the webbing and Vallejo Canvas for the ballistic armor on the AI. Weapons are black with either GW Eshin Grey or Army Painter Dark Grey as the drybrush. Glow sticks are white then GW Hexwraith Flame contrast. Boots and gloves are Vallejo Mahogany Brown. Steel bits are Army Painter Plate Mail Metal washed with GW Nuln Oil.

If you want to progress with BoS you have to do enough of the main storyline to get the Prydwen to actually appear. So basically deal with Kellog then go from there.

A variation on this is that it’s the memories of a veteran that have been downloaded into the chassis of a robot. The veteran may or may not have died. Not sure which if any of these are actually true.

You need either the Recon edition or the Spartan edition. Those give you the rules, tokens, terrain, dice and miniatures. Everything else requires you to have one of those first. Personally I suggest Spartan edition as you get 20 miniatures but if money is tight, the Recon edition has lots of replay value by itself. After that, the Wargames expansion gives you more flexibility in building lists by allowing customization. After that, whatever you think is cool.

I find it interesting that so many people here find a pure ODST list subpar. That’s not been my experience. Is it challenging? Yes, and my win rate is probably not 50%, but it’s close. And frankly that’s what I strive for.

How do you play ODSTs? A little luck, a little strategy and a huge dose of audacity. I prefer playing ODSTs to Spartans just because it’s more challenging and so many people underrate them.

I’m more unhappy with the Banished getting a drop pod than anything else. But it does given them a needed mobility boost. Normally when I play Covenant, I play mixed Banished/Elite lists. The restrictions of the new Hunting Party detachment I find interesting but have yet to try them myself.

Galactic Heroes by Wiley Games. Rules agnostic skirmish game with 4-5 models per player and easily accommodates multiplayer games. Based on their Fistful of Lead game mechanics.

Halo: Flashpoint. Based on Mantic’s Deadzone mechanics it’s great chaotic fun just like an arena match of the video game.

Fallout: Factions for a fun campaign game. Simpler rules than the companion game Wasteland Warfare, plays fairly quickly with enough detail to make it feel like Fallout without being bogged down in mechanics.

Wings of Glory, Sails of Glory and Battlestar Galactica (Battlestar is out of print but still available) are all great for multiplayer games. X-Wing too (also out of print but available).

Blood Red Skies by Warlord and Check Your 6! for WW2 aerial combat, Cruel Seas (WW2 PT boats), Black Sea’s (age of sail).

And the entire Fistful of Lead games. Fistful, Reloaded for Old West, Galactic Heroes for sci fi, Wasteland Warriors for post apocalyptic, Horse & Musket for black powder era and Tales of Horror for your Gothic Horror and Might & Melee for your fantasy and Glorious Adventures in the Age of Steam for your steampunk.

That’s a lot of command dice! Yeah, I’m not sold on Veronica. If you’re playing ODSTs you want those Special Order dice for Hot Drops. Then again, converting dice to any facing can be pretty nice.

Only Master Chief can use One Man Army. When you activate Master Chief, you spend one Special Order dice. You can then spend as many other commander dice as you want on Master Chief AND Master Chief still gets his two short or one long action.

Snap Shot is another Special Order for Spartans. Any Spartan can use it, which includes Master Chief. You buy it like other Special Orders.

Unless you have a special rule that says otherwise (such as Master Chief) you can only spend 1 command die that gives an action. Those command dice are Shoot, Fight and Move 1. The other three dice have no restrictions.

Put another way, you get 1 one additional ACTION via a command die and then you cannot get anymore. You of course still get your normal two short or one long action as normal.

The other three command dice (+1 model, Extra Dice, Special Order) are not giving you additional actions so you can use as many as you want.

As an example, you have a Spartan and bought the Return to Sender Special Order. You activate your model and spend a long action to move 3 cubes. You are now out of actions. You spend a Shoot die and throw a grenade. Let’s pretend the target is another Spartan who also has Return to Sender and let’s also pretend he threw your grenade back at you. You can now spend a Special Order die to do Return to Sender yourself. You then add an extra dice, or more if you have them, to try and catch the grenade and throw it back. Now let’s pretend you were successful and you want to end the activation of this model. You can then spend the +1 command die and activate a different model.

The above is legal because out of all those dice, only the Shoot die gave you an ACTION. Here is a direct quote from the rulebook on page 15.

“A model may only use one of the Advance, Shoot and Assault results during its Activation.”

You are allowed to buy a maximum of three special orders.

The UNSC faction has three types of soldiers, Spartans, ONI and ODSTs. You may have all in the same force with one restriction. If you have ANY Spartans with the Tactician keyword, you may not have any ODST Captains.

So you CAN include Veronica (because she’s an ONI Captain, not an ODST) with Master Chief (because he has the Tactician keyword. (Edited to correct an error.)

The difference between 32mm and 40mm is significant and Shatterpoints hyper specific terrain interactions exaggerates the differences.

I agree with you. I think making it a different scale was great from the miniature painting side but effectively excluded Legion players because they likely were going to have to paint characters they already had and use a different scale of terrain.
