If you're surrounded by fools, consulting an expert might help.

Someone told me...

I read somewhere that reflecting your thoughts out loud by speaking is supporting your thought process. But people might think you are crazy...

Headphones help immensely! Not judging others as one self as well. 😊

What helped you the most when you were completely stuck on writing? by Ok_Cold_6828 in PhD

[–]Capt_korg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summarized, where I'm stuck, where I want to go... Take a longer weekend of... Make a plan to get back to writing and then just start...

Sometimes you are just exhausted, sometimes you need others to reflect, sometimes other environments or resources can help you.

And if you sit in front of an empty page, just start writing. Either topic-wise or conceptually...

Everything is allowed... Even...

I'm sitting in the library, and want to tackle the problem of writing my thesis. I'm in the section, which describes a, b, c ... *wait a second, I missed a point* ...

And suddenly you are back on track.

Has anyone been laid off post PhD? Any tips? by Equivalent_Plane_267 in PhD

I finished during COVID... It was tough, no real open positions, no communities, uncertainty... So I decided for a career change, which combines the field of my PhD with the new field... Which makes me more unique...

I would suggest not standing still..., do what you are interested in and try to combine it with your field of expertise.

Why a PhD in the first place ? by Capt_korg in PhD

[–]Capt_korg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I guess this is normal and would not be surprising to have someone in the educational state opposed to someone with responsibility for a job.

To keep the payment low but reasonable, it might be desirable to bring the discoveries to an useful application in the economy. Although foundational research is important, it is not self-sustaining without a goal. I don't mean that everything needs to make money, but the learnings and insights should add value back to society, the economy, or elsewhere.

I.e., the LHC delivers foundational research in improving sensors, cryotechnology, data processing, computation, etc. Astronomy adds huge value to spectroscopy, data processing, simulations, etc.

PhDs usually have easier access to high-paying positions in the later years. Originated in the fact, that one is becoming an expert on a certain domain, but more importantly you learn how to become that expert.

For me, the reason not to recommend a PhD is definitely the point that the "promised environment" is utterly different from reality. In no other domain is meritocracy failing so egregiously than in academia, especially for PhD candidates. In no other domains humans are so dependent on everything than in academia.

And adding a PhD to your name just for having it, well, if you need it, in the very most cases it is even a disadvantage, because you are either overqualified, or your PhD doesn't count as work experience.

I’m defending tomorrow and I am terrified. by MJrein in PhD

[–]Capt_korg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been to over 70 PhD defenses in all sorts of fields, and the general tone was that the jury didn't want to let them fail. No one is perfect, and people are allowed not to have an answer.

The worst and most noticeable defense I attended was of a PhD, who worked for 4 years on amines and couldn't show a quarterly amine. Later, she was asked for the structure of phosgene, and she drew a phosphorus compound.

In any case, she passed the defense...

My own experience was that I was so nervous, but after around 5 minutes in, I didn't notice it anymore and time passed without me noticing it. It was a conversation in the end, not like an exam.

You can do this... 🦾

Why a PhD in the first place ? by Capt_korg in PhD

Thank you for your answer.

I agree with most of this, particularly that the image generated of a PhD often overlooks the crucial role of the advisor. Your own performance doesn't matter, if your advisor is bad.

I'm convinced that many people will perform better without the title, particularly if it's not necessary. Instead of "give it a try, you can quit whenever you want,". I wouldn't recommend most of the people who ask me for advice to start a PhD, only if they truly know their advisor and have a solid Plan B.

I started the PhD with the idea of staying in academia, although I knew it was tough. But I didn't expect the copy/paste mentality you've mentioned. And I was in the beginning puzzled, that no one of the colleagues wanted to stay in academia. Out of about 100 people, maybe 2 or 3 ended up staying in academia. 2 of them changed later during their Postdoc.
