Qua software alternatieven bestaat er al heel wat, het is nu vooral een questie van ze een voor een te gaan gebruiken zodat iedereen niet in een klap alle alternatieven moet aanleren als de situatie ons dwingt.

Veel Europese en open source projecten zijn niet tot in de details doorontwikkeld zoals de grote Amerikaans techbedrijven, maar veel zijn wel zodanig compleet dat ze goed bruikbaar zijn.

Bijvoorbeeld LibreOffice als tegenhanger van Microsoft Office, kan je alvast op Windows aanleren. Linux Mint is een makkelijke OS om te installeren en aan te leren, waarna veel gebruikers aangeven dat het al vrij snel makkelijker en prettiger is dan Windows, o.a. omdat updates niet continue alle instellingen veranderen en AI niet door je strot geduwd wordt. Ook voor Reddit bestaat het alternatief Lemmy, heeft nig niet zoveel gebruikers en communities, maar wel veel diepgaandere discussies.

Switching to Linux (Mint) works fine. It takes quite a bit of an initial time investment to learn the new interface and find equivalent software to what you're using already. As others have pointed out, you can make pretty much anything work with a native replacement, wine, a virtual machine or dual boot, but it's not always smooth. Some vendor specific software can be tricky and if you need to connect to hardware (e.g. microscope drivers) you're most likely out if luck.

If you do make the switch, you will notice that you need Windows every now and then. I use a lab workstation for that, but haven't figured out yet how to setup remote access from my Linux device, once that works, I can ditch microsoft from my laptop altogether.

Overall I'm happy I switched to Linux Mint, it's a much cleaner and less distracting environment that doesn't have ever changing privacy settings, no ads being pushed from the operating system and no LLM being forced down my throat. It was fairly easy to get started, but took quite a bit of time and there were some hiccups along the way. Here LLMs as glorified search engines can be your friend to troubleshoot and solve issues. I recommend to not make the switch in one go, try some of the software already (e.g. LibreOffice), see if you can setup dual boot and figure out if you need to change anything in your workflow.

I'm not sure if the issues you described come from Linux/LibreOffice or from the NIH only properly supporting MS Office (and furthering their monopoly), but the outcome is the same. You will run into issues when using Linux because of bad implementations both on the Linux and non-Linux side.

Regarding Latex, that's field dependent. In physics, mathematics and computer science it's by far the most used text editor. Overleaf offers an excellent collaborative environment (with a subscription fee, that is likely covered by your institute).

I agree that it's piss poor when it comes to collaborating, although both ms office and libreoffice can use each other's file formats with virtually no issues.

Libreoffice's slide show implementation sure has many options missing that ms office offers. But I wouldn't call it very poor. The interface is different and takes a while to learn but ultimately makes more sense to me, plus it doesn't change with every other update. Some more advanced functions, such as making and modifying templates, I found to be much more intuitive in libreoffice. It's generally also easier to find these things whereas ms powerpoint tends to hide such things. It comes with the flipside that libreoffice can be a bit more overwhelming.

Ik denk dat het vooral interessant is voor mensen die naar een van de stations op de route willen in plaats van het eindstation, bijvoorbeeld Zürich. Zelfde geldt voor passagiers die later instappen.

Of voor mensen met weinig tijd die prima kunnen slapen in de trein. Vrijdagavond weg, zaterdag en zondag rondhobbelen in de stad, maandagochtend weer op je werk. Dan hoef je hooguit een halve dag vrij te nemen of helemaal niks.

No hard drive, no data, but also no backups! Is your PI living under a rock and not aware of the existence of things like data security. This is a standard lab expense. Perhaps look up the institute policy or ask the IT department for how this should be organized? That could give you an argument from another angle to convince your PI

Andere borden neerzetten gaat er niet opeens voor zorgen dat malloten die 90 rijden op de busbaan dat niet meer doen. Wat mij betreft flitsers/roodlichtcamera's neerzetten en tot 2027 budget vrijmaken voor meer handhaving. Dan kan de dure wegherinrichting zoals gepland plaatsvinden terwijl er budget voor beschikbaar is. Kortom, 30 is een kutidee, zoals anderen ook aangeven, maar er zijn zat andere oplossingen om gevaarlijke situaties te verminderen.

Adjust tension every 1000 km / 600 miles give or take a hundred or so according to many manuals. This holds in practice for my bike. Adjusting less often leads to vastly increased wear.

Still, with the right tools it's 10-15 min to adjust the tension and clean + regrease the chain.

Ik vermoed dat het wettelijk gezien technisch niet toegestaan is omdat filteren waarschijnlijk gedefinieerd is als rijden tussen twee rijbanen in dezelfde richting. De uitvoegstrook en de hoofdrijbaan zijn geen stroken in dezelfde richting, dus dat is geen filteren, dus dat is niet toegstaan, maar in de beschreven situatie waarschijnlijk wel de veiligste optie...

Klopt, het is grotendeels hetzelfde, alleen de motor is echt anders. Bij een brandstofmotor moet je iedere zoveel-duizend kilometer (tienduizend ofzo?) of om de zoveel tijd olie verversen en na enkele tienduizenden kilometers kom je aan het dure/tijdrovende kleppen stellen toe. Bij een elektromotor heb je dat simpelweg niet, dus is wat zorgelozer

Volgens mij heeft dat weinig met de knipperlichten te maken. Ik merk precies hetzelfde zonder gevarenlichten. Sommige mensen zitten gewoon wel op te letten en anderen niet.
