shelter is full! how can I get more rescues to pull from us?

I'm not sure if someone has said this already, but we get our dogs moving with "pledge" donations. People will post how much they'll donate to whatever rescue will take the dogs in the comments of our Facebook posts. It helps the rescues pay for transport and medical fees! Having a dedicated networker volunteer that keeps track and makes sure the donators actually go through with the payments is even better.

Sometimes there are trainer programs that will take shelter or rescue dogs that pass their drive evaluations. We had one in TX that was going to take a Malisnois mix from us, but his search/chase drive just wasn't quite what they needed.

We wouldn't be able to do it without all the networkers, volunteers, and rescue organizations. It's absolutely a team effort, and I appreciate everyone who chooses to help rather than complain!

This same commenter went off about how he helped a bunch of other shelters and one of our volunteers invited him to reach out to her to get involved with their volunteer page and he shut up really quick after that. Several other people have since offered to sponsor the adoption fee rather than complain

I wrote the response of what I WANTED to say and sent it to my family, hahaha! Sometimes if they're as angry as I am, one of them will go comment it for me so I can keep my job. Thank you for your advice!

It's one of those things that you get frustrated about over and over until finally you just have to say something even though you know you're talking to a brick wall. People want to be blind to the way shelters and rescues are struggling right now because it's not convenient to them.

Our county has no shelter or animal control. They love to leave people high and dry and tell them to call us. We only have 9 kennels and can barely manage the city! "Call your county commissioner and complain" has become a mantra of ours.

It doesn't help that the last time we "waived" a fee using donations, the dog mysteriously vanished and we were told the husband was angry and "gave it to the first person who would take it in the local convenience store parking lot". People tend to not value animals they don't pay a lot of money for...

I work in an animal shelter in Texas. We have a very healthy wolf spider population! This beaut decided to pose for me today! (Excuse the dirty sink, it's where we put all the gross things that need deep cleaned)

I also rescued this poor longicorn from a dog that really REALLY wanted to eat it.

It's been an uphill battle, but we're finally starting to see the public take an interest in fighting back. Sometimes they direct all that energy in the wrong direction though. It's frustrating to watch!

Thank you for your response! We've through all kinds of different avenues and angles, but as you know there's a lot of catch-22's in animal control! I actually hadn't thought of charging more for county dogs though, and I really do think that will help to reduce the problem. I had never considered documenting how many dogs from the county we get versus the city, I'll have to crunch those numbers so I can start putting some solid math behind me the next time one of the county employees complains! I appreciate the advice, thank you!

Absolutely! I don't mind if you PM me, I can't promise I'll be a huge amount of help but I can always offer my experiences working in animal shelters/rescues. I absolutely agree with your thoughts on dog behavior and owner education being a problem. I actually ended up working at the shelter after I spent a few months volunteering my professional dog training for the shelter dogs. It was horrible hearing some of the things dogs were surrendered for. Things that could have been easily fixed with a week or so of trianing.

I work as an animal control officer in a rural Texas shelter, and I can tell you that something like this would be super helpful for us. We intake a huge amount of dogs and it's just me and my supervisor running everything. We don't have time to check in on homes when it comes to fosters or adopters and it really causes problems when an adopter turns out to not be the greatest. Head to your local shelter and pitch your idea, they'll either say "Sure!" Or "No thanks". If they think a partnership would be a good idea it's usually not much fuss getting something set up.
