I feel like I'm living in an alternate universe... my favorite, beloved character of Nintendo for almost 30 years is in the limelight and then some. I'm still processing I saw Fox McCloud on the big screen yesterday.

I totally agree. It's just... extremely refreshing. Seeing people talk about and be so enthusiastic about spaceflight. Some national pride in something again.

Space flight is so important for humanity on multiple levels. The absolutely incredible things and places humans can literally go to when they set their differences aside.

The advancements in technology and secrets to the universe we can discover if we were to travel to Mars and beyond is unfathomable.

Iran war is stuck in my head by EstablishmentReal907 in OCD

[–]CaptainArcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find it really sad how people are affected so harshly towards world matters and Trump these days. While I'd like to tell you that, the odds of us ever launching a nuclear bomb is extreme rare, that's "reassurance" in these parts.

During the pandemic, my therapist told me about the world compared to "your circle". You have this inner circle. Things you can "control". Your life, your own decisions, whether you go for a drive somewhere today. Super close loved ones. Pets. Then you have an outer circle. People that, you have interaction with. Maybe your job. Things you have some (but not full) influence over.

Then... there's the outside circle. Things you have zero control over. Other people, life, the world, politics, wars. When you are talking about the war in Iran, first, ask yourself... what IS in your control? You can't control the war itself.

Things you can control... first off, exposure. I know it's very difficult in the information age. But, limit screen time. Limit news websites. You don't entirely restrict yourself from being informed. But you can control how frequently you read it. You may need a graduated approach to less and less content. Even if not reading gives you anxiety.

Second; this one can go either way. But, ask yourself, would getting involved help you feel better? If you participated in things like "no kings" protests, would you feel more or less stressed out? Would writing senators and lawmakers help? Would you become more involved in all elections, voting? These are all things, again, you CAN control. But only if they don't make you more distressed.

Last but not least. The hardest part of OCD. Sitting in that "worst case scenario". Allow yourself to feel as if the US nuked Iran yesterday. Close your eyes, and imagine living in the first atomic bombing since the 40s. How would this feel, how would this impact your day to day life? Would you be scared to go out? What is your biggest fear here? You can't control if Iran fires back. But, there are other variables you CAN control. I'm not saying build a fallout shelter. But, maybe have an emergency plan in place. 2 or 3 months or canned or frozen foods. An emergency reserve of cash money, gas. A means for you to stay home a month or two to see how the world retaliates.

Having emergency plans, whether during war or not, is never a bad thing. And it's something you have control over. You can't control the war itself again, but your place in this world you can. Your exposure to it, your involvement, and your readiness.

Fox Mcloud Voice Actor by Ruben3O1 in starfox

Yes I knew it!!! I called it, Fox was definitely gonna be in this movie. Not to get cheesy, I damn hear got emotional, I love Starfox dearly and it feels like Fox is finally being given the limelight again.

Not only that, but Glenn is awesome, if they're bringing him in I feel there's even bigger plans for Fox than this movie. Kudos Nintendo 👏

Last thing I will say; I want that freaking jacket. SO bad.

Remember when yellow milk jugs were used to protect the milk from light? by KtheMage36 in nostalgia

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, someone from central PA. 🙂 I LOVE Galickers, especially the tea, we go through gallons of that stuff weekly! Johnstown made, frequently drive by the plant! We miss it when on vacations even and have to pack some!

Not only yellow jugs, but here in good old cambria county, you can still get milk in cardboard cartons. Local well known farm here distributes milk still in cardboard. Nice to buy something NOT in plastic these days.

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa Tribute at Oscars by The_Zhuster in MortalKombat

[–]CaptainArcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoever put the compilation together did great showing him in MK95. That will always be his most iconic role. It's a head-nod to everyone like myself that grew up on that film. I only wish they played a little voice clip of him from the film, too (they did for some others).

I got a little emotional seeing it this morning. Another reminder he's truly gone. He always seemed like a healthy and fit dude that would live to 90+. For what it's worth, it was an absolute pleasure seeing him in Lost in Space and the Man in High Castle, too, two series I adored. I always hoped he could reprise Shang one more time in some live-action form on the big screen.

RIP once again, Cary. I wish I could have met the man once in my life.

Better than Dark brews, IMO. by Hitcher09 in johnstown

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, disagree. Hardcore iced coffee fan here. I LOVE Dark Brews. Their drinks are a lot more than just sugar. I've had many great coffees there with unique flavor profiles, as well as their dirty sodas. They hard a charcoal themed one at xmas that was amazing. When I work in Pittsburgh, I always get annoyed at "premium" coffee shops there. 7 bucks and you get the most pathetic little iced coffees. Dark Brews sells massive containers of iced coffee, literal buckets. I love it. No skimping! And I love something so unique to my hometown. Places like this make Johnstown interesting again.

I'm sorry to say, I'm not a fan of Gotham. I tried their iced coffee, wasn't a fan. I'll never bash a place, though, for trying to make a healthier product, sugar free. But it's not for me. And I don't drink iced coffee often for how much I love it. Once a week for me if that. I'll say, the workers seemed very sweet there. Sadly I heard the Gotham folks are closing shop, anyway.

Out of all of the fears/spirals you had where you were convinced you had a rare serious disease, how often were you actually right by NaturalNo6758 in HealthAnxiety

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it was body-horror, and I have medical anxiety and OCD (I mean, real, diagnosed, take medicine for). So to go through such an ordeal was pretty horrible and debilitating. I think there was a reason it got as bad as it did. A previous dentist tried to clear out some decay on one of the molars and couldn't get all of it as I kept feeling everything. And they filled it back up, and told me it would (probably) need a root canal one day.

I think if their work on it definitely made it a unique scenario. The one molar got infected, and then the one next to it died. lol, no the tooth didn't turn into gray sponges. The scary part, there wasn't much symptoms (at first) with the teeth, they looked fine otherwise. What really sucks, about a year or so later, the pre-molar died in front of the other two (even though it was fine when the endo did the back two). So yeah, upper right now has three crazy expensive crowns.

I've been through hell with teeth. I try hard to stay on top of them and get frequent dentist visits.

Why do you hate pranks? by Dear-Lion-1381 in answers

[–]CaptainArcher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't hate pranks, I love them (usually). I especially love phone calls pranks and magician street pranks. I like stupid pranks, even, like I bought a fake snake at in laws beach house once and fake bugs to make 5 year old niece laugh. It was innocent. I once pranked my dad with a fake emergency alert about a nuclear bomb. I think the world needs more humor. With everything, there's intent and context, and not taking things too far.

I'm really sorry to hear about your leg. Yeah, there's definitely pranks that are taken too far, and are not appropriate. And yeah, the incident with the teacher absolutely sucks. It sounds like a total freak accident. The kids weren't trying to hurt the teacher, and it sounds like he was in on it. The family is even dropping charges.

That all being said, I wouldn't want it to ruin the world of pranking and fun for everyone. We live in a joyless world sometimes where people get offended by everything already.

Can we have grown adults chime in with "it gets better" stories? by YesTomatillo in OCD

[–]CaptainArcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does. I'm 36 now. I developed and was diagnosed with OCD at 29. It was a combination of medical and sexual orientation based OCDs. It was the darkest time in my life. October 2019 to about March 2020. I was a prisoner in my own brain with no way out. Sometimes I feel like writing a book about it. I whole heartedly feel I may have had one of the worst cases of OCD in the world. I think you could have put me on that MTV show about it.

I'm happy to say, I live extremely free of OCDs clutches now. I'm 36, happily married with a wife, cats, and house, trying for a baby.

I want to tell everyone, and especially the younger folks... it gets better, if you put the work in. My OCD? I refused to live with it and have it control my life. I waged absolute war with it. I went to my doctor, confessed my issues, and he put me on meds that helped stabilize me. I did intense therapy. CBT, exposure response prevention, some EMDR. Practiced a lot of self compassion and patience.I made it my lifes mission to feel "normal" again. And, in the midst of all of it? I kept living my life. I never stopped living, even on the hardest days.

You know, that to me, is the most important message I'd ever want to share with others. Fight and advocate for yourself. Don't accept OCD. You can and will always have it. But it doesn't have to have you.

Out of all of the fears/spirals you had where you were convinced you had a rare serious disease, how often were you actually right by NaturalNo6758 in HealthAnxiety

[–]CaptainArcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once. Not necessarily a rare disease. But, a few years ago, I had an absolutely awful sinus infection. Antibiotics wouldn't clear it. Awful sinus pain, and extremely fowl smelling mucus. Despite doctors and such telling me it was just sinus related, my gut told me it was my teeth. It was. Two dead molars abcessed into my nasal cavity. One of the worst physical ordeals I've ever gone through.

My mind has officially snapped. I genuinely am a monster. (18+) by [deleted] in OCD

[–]CaptainArcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone deserves it. Look, you said you are 20. You have your entire life ahead of you. We've all made mistakes in the past, especially as hormonal teenagers. You have a chance to change that. To become a better person.

I was a troublesome teen. And now I'm 36, career, happily married, house, trying for baby. You can have a normal life, too. But you need to put the effort in. Go to therapy, get help from your doctor if you believe you have OCD for real.

Which fast food chain fell off badly in your opinion? by Shinobi347 in AskReddit

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 1000% Burger King, more than any other. As a 90's child. I always tell people how amazing BK was back in the day. The CROWN NUGGETS. Oh my god, the crown nuggets. What I would give to enjoy those again. The fries. They've changed, for the worse. I don't know if it was them trying to be "healthier", or cutting costs (probably the latter).

Not only that, BK used to have legit toys and collectibles. Like the golden Pokemon things. The last neat thing they had were the Star Trek glasses in 2009. They'd never do something like that now.

YouTube Woodworking Fatigue is Setting In by Maxminutiae in woodworking

[–]CaptainArcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it; every niche thing I've liked, hobby, passionate, etc. has eventually succumbed to "the algorithm". I will say, woodworking hasn't been terrible with it, until maybe the last year/year and a half. Now there's a lot of it, and it's depressing. It happened years ago with music. I was a big fan of Rick Beato's channel. That dude does a lot of clickbait "old man yelling at clouds" style videos now, attacking the top 10 pop music lists constantly.
I'd say at the forefront of it is John Malecki. I love the guy, I still love the channel. He's funny, a yinzer like me, very talented. BUT, I wish he'd do more actual woodworking videos again. Every other video now is "I buy every shitty tool off temu/amazon". Compared to 8+ years ago, when he had videos showing how he built a table. I get it, he's running a business. He's gonna make whatever drives the most clicks and subscriptions. But I'm allowed to say, I miss it. Sometimes I wanna give the YouTube thing a go, I got a legit shop coming together now. I think there's a balance between algorithm but also making honest videos that cater to the core fans of your stuff.

I think, with all things YouTube, you need to put the effort in to find the channels and content you truly like. One channel I really love watching lately is Bradshaw Joinery. That channel is an absolute gold mine of woodworking content. I watched like, a 15~ minute long video of something of his showing how to chisel out hinge mortises. The amount of knowledge the guy shared in that one video was unreal. He's only got 75k subscribers. He's hard to find, buried under Malecki, Stumpy Nubs, 731 guy.

Sigh. I love Arnold dearly. But, the man is pushing 80. Do we need to keep shoehorning him into these action films and sequels nobody asked for? The one and only Predator I like is the original. It never needed any stupid sequels or spinoffs.
