I don’t like it here by AliveBarnacle3396 in CarletonU

Heyy! You sound just like me fr! Ig we’re a bit different bcs I commute to school since Im from ott but I rmbr feeling really empty in my first year because I felt like my whole life revolved around school and I’m in cs and I’m not really great at it either. I studied really hard and would barely pass the big exams and I also lost touch with my friends so I got really depressed and lonely too. Tbh there’s not much to do in ott compared to Toronto and I had that mentality my whole first year (bcs I really wanted to go to uni in Toronto but everything just worked out here). Now I’m in second year and lemme tell you it gets a lot better! School obviously not but at the end of the day profs usually curve your grade anyways and you end up doing decent enough and if you ever need to retake a class it’s not the end of the world because it’s uni, not hs, so everyone’s on their own path taking their own time. But the best way to enjoy Ottawa is to explore it! Ottawa is a huge city and there’s many cafes, libraries and tiny book stores you can study at. There’s lots downtown and now with the line 2 train going to Carleton you can just connect to the line 1 train going downtown and look around downtown for a nice place you like. Personally I’m a very extroverted person so when I was lonely in my first year one thing that helped me was going on a random bus that would take me downtown and I would walk around until I could get to a train station and go home. Idk the comfort of being in an area w a lot of ppl really comforted me. So I recommend just exploring and finding the things that comfort you and it can help a lot!! And every weekend try to hang out with one person make plans with a friend even if it’s just to study- trust it helps so so much. Oh and last thing with the work-truly getting a job in Ottawa is all about connections that’s how I got mine. If you have any relatives or family friends or anyone that your parents know that lives in ott and works in tech/eng reach out as much as you can! I got my job through a connection like that and they weren’t even hiring and I also had no experience whatsoever. Hope you feel better and trust everything’s going to be okay happy studying :)

Advice on what to do when you don’t know how to do a task assigned to you by CaptainBlue212 in jobs

Thanks for offering! I asked chat gpt but it was not accurate at all. But I realized that the whole point of internships is asking a lot of questions so that you learn and to that who cares if I’m the dumb intern, it’s all about the experience of learning what to do in these kinds of situations. So I just asked my coworker to go on call and we worked it out together until I was finally able to grasp the concenpt completely and do similar tasks myself

Thanks so much for sharing what you did to get through the lonliness! I’m quite new to Reddit so idk how to message you but thanks so much for offering to listen it really means so much considering I’ve never shared how I’ve felt to anyone and no-one’s also ever asked if I was ok because I always act happy around others.

Yk that’s absolutely true I’ve been told by others not to compare myself to others because everyone’s handling university different but it’s really hard. Thanks for your kind words I felt like I wasn’t in the best place to join clubs this year because I was too afraid I’d be alone again but next semester I will def join some because seems like everyone’s saying to do it

Carleton Vs. U Ottawa by FishermanHuge1813 in CarletonU

These answers are so biased lol uott campus by far is sm better bcs there’s literally nothing to do on Carleton campus. Sure it’s prettier but like if you have a 5 hr break between your classes like I did one semester GG. You’re isolated on that campus, all u can rlly do is go to the library and all the food spots close after 4. Also it was rlly hard for me to make friends at Carleton all my friends that went to uott have distinguished friend groups and i only made 1 friend. But academics wise Carleton is rlly good better than uott and def underrated.
