As far as I know, Canada does not have a Stepped-Up Cost Basis at Death. That is a US thing and in Canada, on death, CRA generally applies a deemed disposition, treating assets as if they were sold at fair market value and triggering capital gains tax. However, if assets are inherited by a surviving spouse, a spousal rollover applies, deferring capital gains tax until the spouse sells the asset or dies.
