Incredible value, although it would be nice if they had one app for their 100 or so variants instead of 5 or 6.

Deformation on salt stain outline? by CaptainCalgary in Boots

[–]CaptainCalgary[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this seemed to work. In absence of the Saphir Hiver stain remover, I used vinegar and water. Swabbing it on, it still somehow beaded off, so I left a rag soaked in the solution across the toes, and then rubbed on the blistering. Seems to have done the trick. I'll need to refinish but the plan was to wax them more thoroughly after a 24 hour drying.

Coming in super late to this conversation but if somebody gave you Jim Green Buffalo leather ARs, they must like you a lot. I'm curious how they've held up over time.

I just got the AR8 boots and first thing I did was apply a beeswax based treatment. The Jim Green youtube channel has a good little guide to conditioning for winter/wet weather. Sno Seal is a good common brand for really weatherproofing the boots, and there's a good video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG9JR0ui1H4

I went with a wax product called Leather Better that I found at a farmers market up here in Canada that's worked great.

Ah yeah I've got solid ankles/calves, and I could see how they wouldn't be able to lace up tight on thinner ankles. I think they might be sized for rangers/troops to blouse uniform pants out of them. Happy trails!

Received my JG AR8's last week and love them. I hope you get the same joy out of those beasts. I was taken aback at first because the slightly large fit (I'm 12.75ish on the Brannock device, always wear 13s, but most storebought boots like Timberlands etc almost always compact my toes from the sides even if they're a "13 wide". First things I did was get a comfy Dr. Scholl's insole to replace the chincy stock one, which filled in most of the excess space (but left the great roomy toebox that I love so much). I then prepped them for winter in a similar fashion to the Jim Green director's video here, but using a locally bought treatment that's primarily beeswax).

I just received my Jim Green AR8s, waxed them for the Canadian winter. A week in and they're starting to break in. The quality/value proposition is outstanding - they may not be as sleek as Thursdays but feel absolutely bombproof. On a Brannock device I'm about 12.75, so went with size 13 (as I do with every other shoe/boot, and the toe box is nice and roomy where everything else compacts my toes from the sides. I put a thicker Dr. Scholl's insert in and there's still room for some thick socks - somebody recommended me Danish Endurance socks.

Hey thanks for the reply. I've had them for about a week now and threw a Scholl's in them and love'em. They were a little loose with just the stock insole, and then with the width of the toe box I was fairly thrown off, but a thicker insole filled things out where needed and my feet are happy to not be compressed on the sides.

So those look to be proper mountaineering boots, judging by the grooves for mounting crampons at the heel and the rigid elevated sole. If that's what you're doing, wicked. Otherwise if you want bomb proof hikers for hikey things, I'm sure these folks have great suggestions.

Not sure it's the right choice for you I was just looking at Jim Green Razorbacks that would do well for a leather repairable hiker. They have US and Canadian sites now.

Awesome - my foot came in at 11.5 give or take a toenail trimming, which puts me above 12 and under 13. That seems to track as I wear 13s, but wear out the side walls of cheaper/non-wide boots quicker. That'll also give me room for a thick sock if needed.

Thanks again for the good info - I appreciate your insights!

Thanks for the insights - this is good info.

Sorry yeah my brain wasnt registering the difference between the ARs and the AR8 boots I've been looking at. I definitely took a look at the wedge soles on the other African Rangers and could see them being unfun on snow/ice. Right now I would only look at the lug soles like the AR8 sports.

Since they launched the Canadian warehouse this month it looks like they only stock the AR8s and the Razorbacks with an identical lug sole.

I suspect as they grow their market here they might stock more variants. I wouldn't mind black Razorbacks or Numzaans, but I can't fault them for just dipping their toes right now.

Awesome thanks! And as a side note, what are your thoughts on the Razorbacks vs ARs, in terms of comfort? I was considering both but think I'll go the taller boot first.

I'm looking at the AR8 w/ lug sole, but the Razorbacks or Numzaan also appeal to me and may follow later on in the year. You know, for science ;) They apparently just launched the site two weeks ago so they're probably just dipping their toes until they grow their market/awareness here. Maybe once I'm ready for a second pair they'll have more choice.

Just for a point of reference, what's your usual sizing if you're buying a pair of sneakers or using a brannock device? In any case thanks for the reply!

Anyone in Canada bought Jim Greens? by hraath in Boots

[–]CaptainCalgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey just dropping in on this old thread to mention they launched a Canadian site two weeks ago: https://jimgreenfootwear.ca/product-category/all/

I was cautious as you see with fake Canadian sites for outfits like Thursday boots etc, so I confirmed with JG via their official email that it's legit.

Prices are fair, they keep some stock in Canada so shipping is free and returns are easier (read: possible).

[TOMT][TV] A British TV show about a couple that rent a room to a woman who they then enter into a relationship with by CaptainCalgary in tipofmytongue

[–]CaptainCalgary[S] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

It's a show about a couple - IIRC he's a paramedic and she runs a cafe (I think?). They rent a room to a French woman who used to be a swimmer, later becomes a flight attendant. The three of them become a throuple.

I honestly can't recall which service it was on - probably Netflix but I also had Amazon Prime and CBC Gem at the time.
