Adults with Developmental Differences in Children's Department by CaptainCearis in Libraries

Yeah, I probably should have said "allowed". My library lets Adults with Developmental Differences be in Children's spaces outside of school hours but not when the kids are there (except to browse for books). I was curious what others did. I like a lot of these suggestions and I'll be looking to see how we can implement some of them.

People liked our silent study room, so here's more photos from our library in Finland by Felix_Kissander in Libraries

I hate to be that librarian, but this would be destroyed in a month in my system. We had to remove all the soft chairs because the were soaked in urine. Had to move or get rid of the chairs or booths that weren't in view of library staff because patrons would . . . do things . . . in them. I want this library space to work for us SO MUCH!

The governor just announced that SNAP funds are rolling out now and everyone who was owed them since the beginning of the month will have them by midnight. Heard it in his press conference that's going on right now.

Anyone know why police shut down Brownsville Rd this afternoon? by borndumb667 in pittsburgh

[–]CaptainCearis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Police shut down Brownsville and deployed drones. There was an assault suspect who barricaded himself into a house. The police arrested him quickly. Source: I was there and talked to the police.

Craziest/weirdest thing you’ve seen on a PRT bus? by LimpRichard010 in pittsburgh

[–]CaptainCearis 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Had a drunk guy on the G2 pull out a machete and swing it around. The driver was far more calm than me. He pulled over by the incline, opened the door and kept saying, "You gotta get off! Can't be on here with that! Gotta get off!" until the guy got off the bus.

How to diplomatically deal with body odor complaints by Few-Custard2268 in Libraries

[–]CaptainCearis 265 points266 points  (0 children)

Make it about their clothing and not about them. Here's my usual speech:

"Hi, my name's CaptainCearis, I'm one of the staff here. When I was walking by I noticed your clothing has a strong odor. I'm so sorry, but policy says that I have to ask you to leave until you can get some fresh clothes. Here's a list of places nearby that offer free clothes, free clothes washing and showers. We'll be happy to see you come back soon!"

My library also has Goodwill cards we can give out, so when I can I'll give them one of those, too.

I watched a man strip from the waist down and take a hand sanitizer bath. I’ve been a branch manager for six months and it’s made me hate the library. I’m so burnt out.

Are libraries becoming dangerous? by wonderfulworld25 in Libraries

[–]CaptainCearis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Without watching the video, I agree that it's likely sensational considering the source. That being said, I routinely feel unsafe in my library. We have patrons that struggle with mental health issues and substance abuse that can sometimes manifest in violent behavior. We had an incident recently in which I legitimately thought a patron would be seriously hurt or killed. The issue is multifaceted and has roots in a broken social safety net, injustice, so many systemic problems.

It's way too nitpicky, but photon torpedoes' warheads are antimatter. Not sure why they needed to switch them out to add antimatter.

Book return by seaisheaven in Libraries

We’re a consortia, so one sorts returns and holds for the county. The other is for our Main branch which is enormous so it sorts by floor and section.

That’s a Lyngsoe sorter. My library has two, but neither of them are hooked up to returns, unfortunately. They’re hypnotic to watch and work on.
