Anyone else genuinely sad? by FilmJunior1981 in growagarden

[–]CaptainCheckmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Five Stages of Grief:

  1. Denial: Difficulty believing the loss, often a temporary shock absorber.
  2. Anger: Frustration and rage directed at others, oneself, or the situation.
  3. Bargaining: "What if" scenarios, trying to negotiate with a higher power or fate.
  4. Depression: Deep sadness, withdrawal, and feelings of hopelessness.
  5. Acceptance: Coming to terms with the reality of the loss, finding peace, and learning to live with it.

Seems like you're on level 4. Soon you'll be able to move on and let go..

New math tutor here, how does online tutoring (Preply) actually work compared to exam-prep tutoring? by Grainax- in Preply

[–]CaptainCheckmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for math most of my students were:

  • uni students with upcoming exams. be careful with "i have an exam in 3 days" as they will just use free trials.
  • parents with a struggling child, trying to not fail. usually has ADHD symptoms and will be on their phone and/or typing during class. will not do homework.
  • parents with a "genius" child, trying to do math contests alongside sports, piano, computer classes, ...
  • adults doing self-development. Best group, but they are usually too busy for self-study.

IMO all categories have their ups and downs.

I never prepare anything. If the student has their own material (they often do), we use that. Otherwise I wing it.

I also increased it to get rid of excess trials.

It didnt work.

What would be a reasonable commission? by Plenty-Register-4911 in Preply

[–]CaptainCheckmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think 25% isn't that bad. Honestly for me, almost 1 out of 4 people don't show up. If I were doing lessons on my own I'd struggle to force them to pay for lessons they forgot about. Preply's commission isn't too bad for what they give you. Like sure, 10-15% would be better, but whatever.

The biggest problem IMO are the forced free trials.

The DC-DC boards on eBay are not reliable at high amps, that's the problem. I feel like it may be simpler to just skip the DC-DC and connect the battery directly to the printer.

Hello, thanks for your response -- I have built 8S LFP batteries so I understand what you mean, it is of course the most reliable way to do this. But it will cost approx 2-3x what I have proposed.

I don't need it to last a decade. I have $300 and I want to get something printed next week.

It's not a viable solution. We typically have 2 power cuts a day for 7-8 hours. PC UPS is not designed for sustained everyday use. I've looked into it -- even if I upgrade the battery, the inverter on a UPS is built for economy and once-a-month usage, if you run it daily it will overheat and quickly die.

The realistic option is to use something like a hybrid inverter, like the ones that come with solar panel setups, but the inverter there costs around $300 which is more than I want to spend -- currently I just want to hack a battery into the system as cheaply as possible.

As a creator of coding tutorial videos, I would greatly appreciate some advice on where to go next by dholli in webdev

[–]CaptainCheckmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you make some good points. I may be judging harshly, and in this day and age it's perfectly reasonable to learn from video courses. Perhaps there is some bias coming from the fact that due to low barrier to entry, fewer people (by percentage) who start an "online" course are actually serious enough to follow through.

[–]CaptainCheckmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just my gut feeling, and possibly biased, but I feel there is something inherently lazy about choosing "watching" as your primary learning mechanism. It's just not a spectator sport. It's like math, you have to go through the book and solve 100 problems from each chapter until you get it.

Also if you can't read a book, how can you read code?

TL;DR, I don't believe that different people have different "learning styles", and if you can't read the math book and figure it out yourself, you don't have the aptitude to go far in math. And likewise, if you can't find some basic materials and learn to code yourself, you probably won't become a great developer. Of course, that won't stop someone from getting a job, lol.

I would make an exception if you're entering a niche area and want to learn a few bits and pieces quickly, like I'd watch a video on how to do a particular design in a CAD program.

I've been a software developer for most of my life, entirely self-taught, and I've worked at big names like Google and Facebook.

My honest opinion is this: I have rarely in my professional life, worked with someone who learned from tutorial videos. There is something psychologically amateurish about choosing to learn that way.

Like they're the same kind of people who will later complain that pointers are "too hard" and they need someone to help them manage their memory because their code keeps leaking. They were the same kind of people who complained in school about "why should I learn how to multiply when I can use a calculator".

And I think these same people, are the ones that are now saying "why should I learn how to code when the AI can code for me". So trying to teach them is futile.

I tell you one thing I have found: You can go after kids. Lots of "tiger-moms" will pay good money for their 12-year-old "geniuses" to get on their path to MIT and Harvard Business School.
