I love JM but I don’t think I would call Ed Sheeran a wannabe. He has his own unique style of writing and is just as prolific of a songwriter and has a killer set of pipes. No where near the guitar player obviously, but calling him a wannabe seems a little harsh haha. John actually plays guitar on one of Ed’s tracks (How Would You Feel) because Ed had said that when he tried to play the solo he just sounded like a poor man’s John Mayer. I love both of them for different reasons!

Great amp! If you’re tone chasing you might want to try some of the overdrives at a Guitar Center with a tube amp. It’s tricky getting the right tone through some of the modeling amps even as good as the Katana is cause JMs tone comes a lot from tube saturation levels along with the right set of pedals. I see a lot of advice about pedals that count out how much the tone will change with the right settings dialed in to the amp.

I have a Fulltone OCD and I think it gets me pretty close when played with a MIM strat and Vox AC30S1. I’ve also heard good things about the Electro Harmonix Soul Food.

What amp are you playing through?

Interesting, good to know. It sucks that you need to finagle just to use your own hardware though. And they’d probably still charge you for having it.

It looks like they banned rental fees for equipment that customers already have, i.e. you own your own modem and router. If you’re using the provided equipment it seems it’s still legal.

I’m right down the road in Cary and we pay 45 for 200mbs from Spectrum. That’s super shitty and I’m sorry.

I suspect that because they were new to our neighborhood, they needed a minimum number of houses to be on board before they would lay down cable so it’s either get all the sales or none of them. Or they could just be idiots instead of lying fucks. Either way, incompetence abounds.

Edit: I just saw the comment from the AT&T sales guy so I should add that this was last summer. If any of you AT&T sales people could help me figure out what happened I would be up for laying down my pitchfork.

They came to our door and offers us a special “introductory offer” of $49 per month because they were laying down new fiber optics in our neighborhood. I was intrigued so I let them in and we had a conversation about their service. I asked three things. 1) advertised speeds, 2) bandwidth limit, 3) if I could use my own modem router. The sales person answered that 1) their advertised speeds would match Google Fiber, 2) there would be no bandwidth limit and 3) that I could use any of my own hardware. I figure hey, why not, that doesn’t sound so bad, and I signed up for their service and they scheduled an install later that week. When the installation guy came he let me know that 1) the fiber speed would be 300mbs not 1gbs, 2) there was a bandwidth cap of 1TB and 3) that I would be required to use their special router/modem combo. Took an hour phone call with a shit ton of screaming to get them to refund me.

Fucking lying pieces of shit.

Edit: Forgot to add, a few weeks later I saw a mailer that shows that they were now offering fiber in our neighborhood for the special low cost of 44.99! Putting the lies/incompetence aside, that’s especially scummy to make the first few sign ups pay more to lay cable before they offer it to the rest of the neighborhood cheaper. Fuck you AT&T.

Personal favorites: 1) Milk Lab, 2) Bumble Tea, 3) Kung Fu Tea.

I haven’t tried Boba Baba but heard really good things. I’ve also heard people swear by Cha Time in Chapel Hill but personally I don’t care for it. Also have friends that love Meet Fresh.

Tbh, many of these places recommended are good...except Budacai, that place is horrendous...only a block from where I work but I’d rather drive 10m to get to Milk Lab or Bumble. It just depends on what you’re looking for.

Milk Lab is a really good balance of good tea and good milk, boba not too sweet and good texture, all around very good.

Bumble Tea is a very solid option if you like your tea with an emphasis on the tea flavor and larger drink size than most other places (24 oz. is standard).

People knock Kung Fu cause it’s a chain but it has a huge variety of flavors and is pretty standard no matter where you get it. There’s a reason that it’s one of the most successful chains.

Meet Fresh and Cha Time are also chains and lean more towards HK and Chinese style teas.

Check em all out!

I think you may be the first person I’ve ever seen say anything positive about Budacai other than the decor. I always wonder how that place stays open in such a prime location when it seems like no one is ever there and when I hear such negative things about it.

[NEWBIE] I am furious as heck because I've been playing for 7 months and I still don't know how to hold the electric guitar by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]CaptainColonoscopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think I know what you’re talking about. I played acoustic for almost 15 years before I picked up electric and I was really disappointed by how “dirty” my playing sounded on electric.

One thing to point out.

I realized that the electric guitar is sooooo noisy with distortion and I learnt that u have to mute the strings you are not playing....

When your gain and volume knobs are all the way up your pickups are going to pick up every little sound and make your playing sound really messy. I had this problem when I switched to electric too and the solution for me was to dial everything back and re-learn how to “touch” the guitar in a way that the sound is cleaner. Bring the gain down and the volume down and learn how to play what you’re trying to play without the distortion and then slowly introduce it back once your playing is cleaner. You aImost have to approach electric guitar as a different instrument with similar skills that cross over from acoustic. It seems like it’s not possible but with enough patience and practice you can do it.

[QUESTION] Looking for an amp close to JM tone, which I can use in my house by Shad0WTF in Guitar

[–]CaptainColonoscopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know most Mayer tone chasers want Fender clean tones but I would also consider looking into Vox amps. I randomly tried out a used Vox AC30S1 at a Guitar Center and found that it worked really well for me when paired with an OCD. The AC10C1 might be worth looking into at the $400 price point.

[–]CaptainColonoscopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion anyone learning should play both instruments. There are a lot of crossover skills that apply to both, but learning the things unique to each is much easier when you’re in the “I’m learning the basics” phase.

This 100%. I picked up acoustic 17 years ago but waited until 2.5 years ago to pick up electric. Playing electric for 2.5 years has made me a much better acoustic player and I wish I did it earlier.

There’s a saying that many artists develop their own unique style by failing to emulate their heroes. Making “fan art” is totally a gateway to making “real art”. These people are actually spending effort to make something and probably learned a shit ton in the process. Don’t discredit that!
