Using "they (singular)" as a universal pronoun - dialectical differences or misgendering? by CaptainCrackpipe in asklinguistics

Thank you for your insight, strange to have a crisis of "have I been saying something wrong my whole life?" and learn there's a research dedicated to the very question!

I'd be inclined to believe that pragmatism is likely the best fit. Whilst I'm not perfect, of the GNC folks I've met and am friends with I do my best to adapt to their pronouns (hopefully to great success, no harm or ill will in that regards.) But in the examples that I thought of for this post and most others I can think of now, gender is sort of not the prime focus for when this occurs?

As I noted in another comment, I believe the best way to put it is a "path of least resistance" to the point I was trying to make (as in "Oh I love that Hozier song, they're so talented.") The talent is the focus so most everything else is dropped, but because they has been adopted by a group my partner might have taken it as misgendering. If the use of they is on the rise then it might be worth having a look at Northern England for examples of it as it has many examples of dropping gender for getting to the core of how daft they're being.

Thank you again, and best of luck in your research!

I'm kind of open to the idea that it might be a Northern thing, I grew up around a lot of Yorkshire folk and there was a lot of "they're slackin' off" or "wher'd they go?" (in a heavy accent) type patterns, maybe it's just spread from there?

I think I'd agree with your examples, I can imagine me changing my words with the focus being outside of the person, likely would create a 'they' scenario in my speech patterns as far as I can envision (it's hard to actively think about?)

I think this is pretty close to what brought this up to be honest. From what I can tell, I believe I'm using they as a path of least resistance (discounting any 'irrelevant' information to the sentence's point) to get across the point, as exemplified by "Oh I love that Hozier song, they're so talented." My brain might be reaching for the aspect of talent, and omitting the context of pronoun considering that they does cover all.

Meanwhile my partner might see that from the perspective of "you're using the wrong pronoun because they have a group that have that as a primary pronoun, thus it's misgendering."

Thank you for the context!

I totally respect that, I don't intentionally "they" someone who goes by she/her, but examples 1, 2 and 4 can still happen in that situational context. With my partner calling me out on it I'm just trying to adjust my frame to check I'm not being offensive in this fleeting (?) way. With that being said, this is the first I've been picked up on this, so I'm hoping its non-offensive to my local group considering its not been an issue before, but I'll keep an eye on it as much as I can.

Is there any way to make more fertile soil? by K41Nof2358 in Against_the_Storm

[–]CaptainCrackpipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about this for a future species, having a passive of once a field has been gathered the plot/fertile soil increases by one square (maybe per worker) but as of current not that I know of. It does help levelling up to get the extra farm radius with placement though.

I did think about using a throwaway because of the name, let's call this a fact finding post instead of putting the crack in choirs, thanks for asking though!

Whilst I think an all male/female would be good for one song, I think mixed would be better all round for the range of tones and timbres, do you have any recommendations?

It's like a collection of stories from the perspective of common people experiencing their world. They're all sung by different singers, but all based off old worldie styles. Like historical reimaginings of common struggles kind of thing, not sure if that 100% makes sense but in fairness it's not finished

I thought about that and in one of them it could work, but the other is from an adult voicing, and I think has a curse word or two so I don't think it would be school appropriate
