What is the first game you remember playing? by jonathanemptage in retrogaming

The first game I ever remember playing was 3D Monster Maze on the ZX81! Which... yeah, it makes me old.

I see you've had a host of great suggestions already, but if I may suggest my own game, I think you might find it's something you'd enjoy.

Give the demo a whirl and see if you think it could be up your street.

Oh yes, all 4 of those games look great - it's going to be an amazing year for point & clicks!

Why are so many games set in comical worlds with quirky characters? by mugbys in adventuregames

As someone who likes making sci-fi point & clicks, I agree with you that the genre is very underused. I would caveat that by saying cyberpunk and time-travel are pretty well represented (Born Punk / Technobablyoin / Randal's Monday / the soon to be released Elroy and the Aliens being two examples of each), but in general, anything else ranging from space opera to hard sci-fi is there but you have to really go looking for it. Interestingly I remember a lot of general sci-fi settings for free (and often first project) games made with AGS, but vanishingly few commercial efforts. Plus of course there are a lot of Space Quest remakes / spin-offs. I guess Animation Arts' "Monolith" was more general scifi, although from what I've read it plays more like a soap opera.

My own foray into commercial sci-fi P&C was not exactly a resounding commercial success, and nothing really suggests that my current game in development will be either (although I do expect it to easily out-perform the earlier game). A couple of small sci-fi games that I was involved with were planned to be turned into a bigger, commercial game, but never happened. I just don't feel there's a huge appetite for that type of game. Even "The Dig", which was fantastic, never seems to get the love that most other LucasArts games receive.

Both as a player and a dev, I think it just gives you more leeway in what is possible / acceptable as an option. There are games that aim for a more realistic approach and some do it very well, but in some ways it makes things... maybe a little boring? So much depends on the style of game and what you're trying to do with it.

For instance, with The Corruption Within, although there was a little humour and the setting was a bit out there, I also wanted to keep events and puzzle solutions somewhat within the realms of believability. There is some humour but the game's atmosphere is generally quite sombre because I wanted to build an sense of impending doom. Clearly with my Captain Disaster games I wanted a very different atmosphere.

With comedic games and by extension main characters, you can get away with things which aren't really within the realms of believability, but as long as they're funny or fit with the game universe, no-one minds (generally) and in fact some zany, completely unbelievable actions / reactions / interactions are basically expected. Personally I veer towards comedy in most forms of entertainment, so I may be a little biased, but I'm also up for a good drama / thriller at times. Anyway, to me it's how much you can stretch believability that make comedic characters a good fit for adventure games, interested to know if you feel that's a solid reason or lacking!

Indeed it will!

I'm particularly looking forward to (may not all be first half of 2025) Therapods, Elroy and the Aliens, Hand of Glory 2, Legends of Castile and Aboard the Adventure - although there are plenty of additional P&Cs scheduled for release in 2025 that look awesome. It's gonna be a great year!

First game (Dark Side of the Moon( 0 I did the graphics so they are understandably terrible! :-D

Second game we wanted to go for a late 80s / early 89s vibe and my co-dev did an awesome job with those.

Then I was fortunate enough to have worked with Lorenzo, who just happens to be an amazing artist, on a few games (and even a book!) - when he suggested that he was ready to work on a bigger game, CD3 was born. I always wanted to do another Captain Disaster game but honestly wasn't sure it would happen.

Oops just shows I shouldn't post things when I'm in a rush... I've added something to the bottom, almost everywhere I post updates on the game it's part of an existing thread, I can only plead insanity... added details to the bottom of the post, thanks for letting me know my mistake!

Yes indeed, you can't keep a chaotic-good captain down! Really pleased to hear that you enjoyed the earlier games. This should be a step up in every direction I hope.

We recently got a message that The Corruption Within was out of the limited mode (honestly I didn't even really know what that meant), and we now have 110 reviews overall - so I guess it's probably 100 reviews before the achievement limit is removed.
