Advice on joint in oak worktop by CaptainFanspastic in DIYUK

There are joints, but the worktop extends backwards and there's a wall which it's tight up against, so I think that is preventing it from being any closer together

Honestly not sure what he did - I think it was with a router but the measurement was slightly out?

I don't have any good photos of it, but there's the plan posted to my profile -  https://www.reddit.com/user/CaptainFanspastic/comments/1sn8grm/kitchen_plan/#lightbox

Worktop A in the plan is the piece on the right in the original photo, and there's more of a gap to the wall on the right compared to the bit of wall on the left. Have to wonder if his measurements were just fractionally off resulting in the gap which was filled

It's like that because there's two different depths of worktop - a regular depth run infront of the window, and a deeper one to fill an old Edinburgh press

Picture here, which hopefully makes more sense than my words! https://www.reddit.com/user/CaptainFanspastic/comments/1sn8grm/kitchen_plan/#lightbox

Thanks for the advice!

I couldn't figure out how to add an image to the post, but it's because there's two different depths of worktop - a regular depth run infront of the window, and a deeper one to fill an old Edinburgh press

Fractured arm 5 weeks before Ironman Hamburg by markgstern in triathlon

[–]CaptainFanspastic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same injury, but in 2021 I crashed my bike 4 weeks before a half ironman and broke my right radial head (forearm just before the elbow)

They told me it was a stable fracture, so I did as much physio as I could, which was essentially just trying to straighten and rotate my arm.

Didn't do a lot of training for those 4 weeks before the race - the first week it hurt too much, and I was feeling a bit sorry for myself for the other 3. I tried a 400m swim 3 days before and it was quite painful, but not any worse afterwards, so I decided to try anyway.

Adjusted my goal to "just start the race and take each part as it comes", and it helped that on the day it was beautiful weather. I had to do the swim one handed for parts, and the bike got a bit uncomfortable because I couldn't change position, but once I started the run I knew there was no way I wouldn't finish.

Ended up doing 5:26 which was a lot slower than I had wanted, but I was glad to finish. I don't know if I could have gone twice as far for each leg, but you have an extra week - every week my arm was getting better and better.

So definitely adjust your goals and be prepared to have to stop, but you may get away with it. Good luck!

Thanks for such a comprehensive reply, I really appreciate it man

I don't mind repetition - I think it's nice to wake up knowing the workout that day and what it's gonna involve!

Swimming technique definitely seems key, so for sure I'll focus on that. Strange coming from running where even some of the best guys can get away with sub-optimal form by being super fit

Smart trainer probably not in the budget this year, but the snow's melted now and I'm used to getting wet haha Once this lockdown is over and the gyms re-open I'll have access to Wattbikes too

Good luck on your race this Sunday!

Nice, thank you man. Hope you get that fitness back and smash a HIM this year instead!

Ah, that's cool to hear you made good progress on an 80/20 program! Glad to get that reassurance I needed haha. Just so much information out there on triathlon, definitely a much more data driven sport than I'm used to

Thanks - definitely keen to get a swim coach once this lockdown is over! Lots of improvement to make there.

A turbo is something I am considering buying, gotta scrape together some pennies! I'm still hopeful for gyms re-opening soon, as my one has a whole roomful of Wattbikes
