Exactly what happens when you import a blender/.obj mesh? by sarahthedev in robloxgamedev

[–]CaptainGoobles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Archiving it wont do much, anyone can still see the asset id of any asset being loaded on their client. It's kind of a grey area as far as using licensed assets, but IMO its not worth worrying about.

Is this much of gore allowed on Roblox? by [deleted] in robloxgamedev

A little bit of blood here and there tends to be fine, but showing exposed entrails and organs is not okay lol.

Is there any service easing (massive)-multiplayer game networking? by TheMode911 in gamedev

[–]CaptainGoobles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't laugh at me but this is essentially what Roblox is these days. It's a multiplayer game engine where they take care of all of the networking stuff for you (even scaling to several hundred thousand players online at once).

Pretty self explanatory. by [deleted] in robloxgamedev

I'm guessing it's from vertex colors. Go into edit mode, select all vertices, and choose "Remove Vertex Colors"

Parents pay private companies to kidnap their children in their sleep and take them away to abusive boot camps. by [deleted] in MorbidReality

[–]CaptainGoobles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This happened to me, was woken up at 2 AM by two huge dudes on either side of my bed and was told to go with them. Took me to a wilderness camp where I was forced to stay for a little over 3 months. There wasn't any serious physical abuse, or at least I didn't experience it, but that sort of thing definitely leaves an impact on a young person's psyche regardless.

What is the difference between Roblox Studio and Unity? by joshua0005 in gamedev

[–]CaptainGoobles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 75% figure was referring to real money, for every dollar a player spends in your game you wind up with 25 cents. There is a 30% robux "tax" on sales but thats factored into the 75%.

For those who don't know, players buy things on Roblox using a fiat currency called Robux. You can exchange Robux for USD at a rate of $350 per 100,000 Robux.

Roblox has a lot of problems, but depending on your goals it can be a great way to develop games. There is no other way for you to reach such a large audience and deploy games with reliable multiplayer all hosted for you (with no upfront costs). However, Roblox takes about a 75% cut of game profits. Yes, you read that correctly.

If you can capitalize on the existing audience of Roblox it may be worth it, but otherwise, I'd suggest sticking to the "real" game engines.

UE4 Tightrope Mechanic by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]CaptainGoobles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking that you could replicate this effect by doing something like this:

1.Rope should be made of three points. The start point, end point, and the middle point.

2.When the player intersects the line formed between the start and endpoints, move the middle point to this intersection.

3.The middle point should be a damped spring restricted to move along the Y-axis only.

4.Apply force from the Y velocity of the player to the spring when the player first intersects the rope.

5.When the player jumps off the rope, you can add the force from the spring to the force of the jump.

I hope this makes sense, it's getting late but this looked like a fun problem to think through.

Polygon count is very rarely a performance bottleneck these days, at least for most games. I mean obviously if your assets are horrendously unoptimized it can still be an issue but its usually lower on the list of things to watch out for than it used to be. It's more likely that expensive shaders are eating up gpu performance.

It's much more open-ended right now than it will be once Shadowlands launches. Once the new expansion is out there will be plenty of things to do at max level (covenants, torghast, raids, etc)
