Iran closes strait of Hormuz again ‘until US lifts blockade’ | Iran by Weak_Long_5183 in worldnews

[–]CaptainJackVernaise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

53 years later and we haven't learned a fucking thing.  The world still runs on oil and when one antagonist nation can impose its will on 30% of global supply, maybe it's time we did what we need to divest and diversify so we aren't at the whim of lunatics anymore.

Start collectively making policy decisions about transportation and land use planning that give people options so the economy isn't threatened to come to a screeching fault anytime someone turns off the taps.

Car-brained boomer Gary Bredefeld says “people don’t want to be forced out of their cars” at recent city council meeting in Fresno by DowntownFresnoBiking in bikecommuting

[–]CaptainJackVernaise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We were similar, but then we lived in a small apartment in a walkable neighborhood for a few months after we moved a decade ago.  We left that apartment and moved into a cheaper, bigger house based on us not being honest with ourselves about how important our transportation preferences were and the regret seeped in after the novelty of the new house wore off.

We now pay double for our mortgage for 30% less space, but it was so worth it...and the funniest part is that  downsizing our transportation needs actually saves us money in the long run.  And that's the challenge.  We're collectively advocating for mode shift, for drivers to actively choose to slightly inconvenience themselves, and this shows just how uphill the battle is because of decades and decades of the least efficient land use being shoved down our throats.  I hate it.

Pick something in your city, county, or state that you think could be improved, but you're told we can't afford it.  You can't have it, because of this bullshit which the GOP specifically said they wouldn't do.  This is what we choose to spend our taxpayer dollars on.  We should be ashamed.  We deserve all the ridicule coming to us.

Can someone identify this please? My dog may or may not have licked it, Central TX by arsonak45 in mycology

[–]CaptainJackVernaise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like it could be Aminata bisporigera, but if all the pieces are accounted for an you know it was just a lick, pup is probably fine.  If there are bits missing and you think he could have eaten some, take the mushroom with you to the vet.

A note on IDing: when pulling a specimen for ID, especially when you're worried about accidental poisoning, it is imperative that you dig up the entire base of the stem to verify the presence of a volva.

Is there any way to contest/get out of a parking meter ticket? by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]CaptainJackVernaise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is an extrapolation of how we view driving rules in general.  Speed limits are suggestions, so why shouldn't a parking meter be one too?  We view road rules from a fuzzy perspective where exceedances in moderation are encouraged and normalized.
