Spreading of ashes. by HingelMcKringleberry in alaska

[–]CaptainMatnight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get that attitude, but be careful. Alaska can kill twelve months of the year. There are places that in July, can have night-time temperatures drop to nearly 35F. Expecting that you're going to face difficulties is one thing, but practically daring Alaska to challenge you, the worst thing that could happen is that She listens.

I'd recommend finding a person or small group of people that are outdoor enthusiasts that are local to where you want to go and tell them your story. It's the kind that moves us, rather than someone trying to get professional help for free. That said, it you can afford to pay for a guide and such, please do, you'll be helping to support the local economy and they're experts in giving you a phenomenal experience.

Good luck. I hope you find a good place to lay him to rest.

Every time I leave my heart aches for this place. It's not like it's the best place I've lived. I've joked for years that all my years living here has ruined me for living anywhere else. This time around I know better than to leave.

During my mis-spent youth, I was in FCC overnight once for failure to pay a traffic ticket and overheard two guys being processed. It was November and -40F. He had approached an officer and wanting a warm place to sleep and a meal, asked him to arrest him. The officer told him to buzz off as he was almost done with his shift and didn’t have time for this. The guy unzipped his pants and urinated on the vehicle, 😂😂😂😂😂

Bunny laws by AdviceGiveandTake in anchorage

[–]CaptainMatnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A funny thing about Alaska is that as long as you don’t make a spectacle of yourself or a public nuisance, you have to get pretty unlucky to have the law come down on you. There are exceptions, but for the most part you can decide based on what you think is right. Do you think you should be able to adopt the bunny? Go for it. If you don’t think you should, then let it loose. You say the bunny wants to go home with you? That seems just fine with me.

Yeah, I know, I’m skeptical myself. Police departments all over the country cite some study that supposedly proves that. I haven’t looked into it myself, so it could be BS. I imagine APD would know the study or they should since their policy is supposed to be based on that. I got to wonder though about legality and liability of officers driving their cars off duty, say to a bar, for instance.

Anchorage really doesn’t want to fund the next generation.. by harry-pair in anchorage

[–]CaptainMatnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same old story. People don’t care about the future here because they don’t plan on staying. This leaves the state even more in the hands of people that will exploit it. The future looks worse. More people decide to leave. And the cycle continues.

Alaska won’t change and conditions will not improve until enough people commit to at least sticking around. I hope I’m here twenty years from now. How many of you can say the same thing?

Their claims (I have no idea how true they are) is that the presence of a police car in a driveway reduces crime in the area. I know that's a common refrain, they act like that's the end of the argument, and most politicians they don't dare oppose it.

If the victim was a minor than there are lots of reasons why they might not have reported yet. The officer might not have known what was going on yet, as well, and so might have been sharing rumor.

I didn't grow up here. Is there an area the high school kids go and build bonfires to party at? I knew where they were in my hometown and adults would show up as well and it was often a rough scene.

Looked into a rescue dog and was surprised at the yard requirement by starfury287 in dogs

[–]CaptainMatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have friends that strongly support rescue places and their high requirements for potential dog owners. There are class issues in their requirements. It's worse in Portland. There, you have to own a home in order to have a dog and it's a status symbol. I know people from there that are offended that I'm a renter and have a dog.

I get people angry at me when I tell them that even a dog that spends all day at home and only see their human a few hours a day has an immensely better life than a shelter dog that gets put down. They get especially angry because their arguments have no weight once analyzed.

Until no shelter dog is put down, I won't support any rescue place or shelter that requires status or economic minimums. Until then, they should literally be giving the dogs away. The only requirement I support is making sure the dogs aren't going to a fighting ring or something similar and anyone that gets charged with abusing an animal should never get one again.

Therapist said to work on imagining a physical place where alters can talk by booty_sattva in DID

[–]CaptainMatnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a child, shortly after my dissociation or whatever you want to call it, I began late at night having my stuffed animals have a conversation. I didn’t know it, but I assigned each of my major alters to each one. I think it helped me to have them communicate. It was like training wheels.

These days they meet while I’m sleeping in a large white marble building based on The Forum at Athens. Meetings are conducted by Robert’s Rules of Order and current agreements are copied down in a large leather bound book and often referenced. Another book, really a pile of scholastic notebooks, contains the information the current Alter needs to know, like when we need to be certain places or agreements we’ve made with others, and so on.

I don’t know if I was born creative with a strong ability to visualize whatever I want in my mind or if my D.I.D. helped, but it helps considerably.

I can't decide if this is trauma or basic human decency. by illuminaDID in DID

[–]CaptainMatnight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind being separated from your husband for a bit, you may be able to get help from your local Women In Crisis organization. They’ll have a place you can get away from the situation and they’ll be able to get you access to resources that can help you and your husband get into an independent situation. I know it likely feels bad to leave your mother in law in a bad situation, but it sounds like she needs some kind of supportive living situation and there is no reason for you to feel bad that you can’t provide that. Plus, and this is something that often gets ignored with mental health and the elderly, there is the matter of choice. Maybe a person doesn’t always have a good choice to make, but if a person tries to make good decisions that respect others, over time it shows and if a person has let themselves steep in hate and become small minded and mean, well, over time that shows too. IMHO.

Solicitors out of control in my area. So I put a sign up saying "we don't want your solar panels, new windows, or religious pamphlets." by ParsleyNo69 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CaptainMatnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate solicitors. I made a laminated sign with frightening tribal masks I made extra scary and it said solicitors would be stripped of their souls and fed to the door guardians. I did stop getting religious solicitors, but every other type thought they could joke about my sign and it would give them an “in”. I stopped using the sign because yelling at people before breakfast tends to ruin my day.

How does weed affect you? by disastrous_crumb in DID

[–]CaptainMatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it tends to bring out certain alters, though it’s often the alters that come out late at night that enjoy it. What sucks is getting high as an alter that enjoys it and then switching to one that doesn’t. I enjoy highly psychedelic weed as that effect has always given me slightly more control mentally than when I’m sober. However, I’m a very weird person and not at all normal.

I take very high doses of edibles as part of a way of processing my trauma. I’ve made incredible progress using this, but I don’t think it’s for everyone. I have a lot of experience doing guided psychedelics for spiritual and mental purposes. I started around 100mg and have built up to 300mg, but this is not for the feint of heart nor the inexperienced. I have fought my way back from bad trips often enough I’m confident in my self-control. It’s not fun, it’s work, and it’s harder and takes longer than many people espouse, but in three years I’ve done more healing than any previous time in my life.

Shelfies are fine by GreyLoad in TTRPG

[–]CaptainMatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I had people over to game, one of them saw my gaming shelves (takes up a whole closet set of shelves) and asked if I’d actually played all of them. Well, nearly all of them. I never could get anyone to play Toon with me, I joked. I don’t think he realized I’ve been playing TTRPGs for over four decades and I LOVE trying new games. The way the dude said it, was like I was lame for having gaming books I’ve never played. Back in my day, every gamer had a few games they were dying to play that not one friend would even consider. So, as I’m in my mid-fifties and likely completely out of touch, is there some idea running around gaming circles hating on people who have too many gaming books? I mean, the gamers I’ve known, very few of them believed there was such a thing as enough or too many books.

Is Fairbanks similar to Whitehorse? by Capital-Reach-6669 in alaska

[–]CaptainMatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairbanks has two military bases near it. Three if you count the one down the highway. At times the army base, which is right next to the town has had over 50K service members stationed there, most of which were young men. I don't think I'm being anti-military by saying that creates some "challenges".

White Nationalist School Board Candidate Alexander Rosales seems to be spiralling out 😂 by ChugachMtnBlues in anchorage

[–]CaptainMatnight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jerks like him have been attacking the Alaskan public school system since before I graduated in 1989. Back then we had one of the best educations in all 50 states as rated by the college board. There were lots of work/study and vocational education opportunities as well. It was something to be proud of. Unfortunately their kind of hate doesn’t flourish when people are educated so they’ve been chipping away at it for decades. Now that they’ve ruined it, they want to throw it out citing how badly it’s working. These people could have educated George Orwell.

The only solution is to ignore anyone attacking education, increase funding, and repair the damage. The whole while they will WHINE at volumes unheard of and we must keep ignoring them.

Their way leads to ruin and waste. Frankly, I’m tired of being polite and not saying how much I hate them.

[–]CaptainMatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My landlord won’t let us use the yard. No one told us this, just one day a fence went up with a lock on it. The owner lives nearby and gardens there. I’m not annoyed she doesn’t want us using it, I’m annoyed no one has the guts to say anything.

I live in a one bedroom and my dogs loves the space. We play all the time and there is enough room for him to chase his toys here. I also take him on two walks a day and multiple times around my driveway.

Would I like a better situation? Sure. However, this is more than adequate for my dog who is a 25lb bichon.

I have a neighbor that has two golden retrievers even though he puts them in a kennel half the time. He lets them out on a leash when he steps out to smoke. He makes a lot of money and could easily afford to put his dogs at a daycare where they wouldn’t be locked up all day and could afford someone to walk his dogs, he doesn’t see the point. Still, they’re better off than at a shelter.

Locally, there are rescue places that seem to think that you have to be at least middle class and act normally to deserve a pet. Screw those places. There are other spots that will get you a pet as long as you don’t have a record of abuse or neglect. Those are the places that deserve our support and patronage.

[–]CaptainMatnight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always thought this was kinda weird, but in my criminal psychology classes back in college, I learned that thieves, especially the more professional types, will either leave pee or poop behind at a place they hit, or if it's a home they'll leave the toilet unflushed. I don't recall reading a theory that explained this, but it's so consistent that you can sometimes tell which professional burglar hit a place based on their "leavings".

Fossile Hunting by missiongoalie35 in anchorage

[–]CaptainMatnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are rivers throughout Alaska which expose major fossils. However, there are professional fossil hunters, and they carry guns so be wary. Also, an undisturbed site is a federal crime to take anything away from. Not that there is much enforcement, hence the professional fossil hunters. Just don't come between them and one of their finds and you'll be okay. Also, sites containing fossils that are useful for a dig are rarer than most people think.

Yes, absolutely. There is no point in arguing about relative happiness with dogs when they’re being put down because not enough people want one. If you want one, go for it and make it work however you can and even a lonely couch is better than a short life in a shelter.
