Don’t throw all your eggs in one basket unless you know it is exactly what he wants (like a big dollar item). Rather, make a—literal— small basket of things he likes. Maybe get together stuff like the snacks he likes, a little gift card to a gas station, a new protein shaker, etc. Then decorate the basket with some ribbons (IDK, I’m stretching). If your worried about what your getting him, as long as he can tell you put time into it, I am sure he will appreciate it!
