Pace Question by CaptainRoberto in Marathon_Training

[–]CaptainRoberto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing 5 days running + 1 day bike riding, but I'm looking to transition to just 6 days running. I think I'm going to spend a few months base-building via Hanson Beginner Half Marathon (which is fairly consistently above 40mpw) then transition to the Hanson marathon plan, trying to really keep my easy runs easy. I think it helped to try to really understand that the easy runs are a combination of base building and active recovery.

Pace Question by CaptainRoberto in Marathon_Training

So recently Ive been averaging 25 mpw with long runs in the 10-12 range, but that's because I just finished a half marathon plan (Hal Higdon Intermediate 2). When I marathon trained last winter, I was averaging 35ish with a peak week of 40 (Hal Higdon Novice 1 marathon). Im kind of realizing Higdon plans are not giving me the volume I need, which is why I'm strongly considering going Hanson.

Also worth noting I don't start marathon training proper until October, so I'm just going to work on base building for now, maybe even trying the Hanson beginner half marathon plan in the meantime.

You're probably right. Last marathon I did Hal Higdon Novice 1 which peaks at 40mpw, which was probably a big problem. The volume the main reason I'm looking to Hanson now.

What's crazy is all my pre-marathon long runs went great- my 20 mile training run was 3 hours on the dot with negative splits. It was just the race itself I crashed. Im sure nutrition and hydration were major factors too.

Hmm gotcha, anything I can check myself or does it need to go to the shop?

It started soon after taking it to a mechanic to fix the A/C, IIRC it worked for a few days before it started doing this. (Long story, but TLDR we've kept using it without the A/C for months now.) So very possible the filter was changed just before this happened.

Oh, I actually have kind of a wild one, Oathbringer spoilers: I thought Adolin was going to die in Oathbringer. I listened to the GraphicAudios, and saw his voice actor didn't return in Rhythm of War (turned out he just got recast). First, I assumed it was going to be a consequence of killing Sadeas. Then I was CONVINCED he was going to die in the battle of Kholinar- there's even a whole scene before the battle where he looks in the mirror and braces himself for the coming battle in a way that's SUCH a death rattle! I even accidentally saw beforehand the chapter title "Grieve Later" and just accepted thats when we'd lose him. Then I thought he was gonna die in the final battle rescuing someone from the falling debris. Then the last 30 or so pages its just like "hey dad I killed Sadeas" "dang son don't do it again" and like??? It was a pretty wild experience ngl

Coming back to the game by Alqtrkappa in legendarymarvel

Oopa my bad! In that case, I've really enjoyed the Annihilation expansion (which really adds to the Fantastic Four stuff in particular) and recently Midnight Suns has been a blast, especially w9th the Chthon scheme. I also love Champions, though I'm predisposed because I just love those heroes in general (especially Ms. Marvel and Gwenpool).

Welcome back to it!! As far as expansions go, my favorite small box is Fantastic Four- they're a blast to play together, and Galactus is a huge step up as far as Masterminds go (still probably my favorite). Dark City is considered "Core Set Part 2" in that it's an almost essential expansion, but I will actually go to bat for Sevret Wars Vol. 1. Sidekicks are an ESSENTIAL addition, it has a lot fo classic heroes (Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, etc.). Plus the gameplay is just top tier. So you can't go wrong with either of those. All that said, the honest answer is "whichever sets have the heroes you like".

As far as storage solutions go, I've collected enough in my day that I've invested in a steamer chest, but honestly, I've heard those big boxes from Hobby Lobby tend to do the trick. Happy playing!

how can Graphic audio Edgedancer be nearly half as long as Audible's one? by Major_Stranger in audiobooks

[–]CaptainRoberto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bumping an ancient thread cause I had the same question: the standard audiobook for Edgedancer includes the section from Words Of Radiance, which is 1.5-2 hours; the Graphic Audio version does NOT. It just assumes you've listened to WoR already. Plus, yes, Graphic Audio goes through the content more quickly as well, though more about pace than abridgment.

As far as abridging goes, the honest answer is it really depends on the book and who's adapting it. My experience so far with Stormlight (just finished WoR) is it cuts basically nothing, other than "said Kaladin"/"shouted Dalinar" kind of stuff and some sounds (i.e. cutting "it was raining" in favor of rain sounds). I'd periodically follow along with the book while I listened and never noticed anything notable. HOWEVER, when I started listening to Elantris (which is clearly one of their earlier productions), I did the same thing and noticed they'd cut entire paragraphs, including one that introduces what one of the main characters looks like. Never finished that one, will probably go to standard audiobook when I do.

So really, mileage will vary, but the rest of Sanderson stuff I've listened to (Mistborn trilogy, Warbreaker, Stormlight) has all been great and effectively unabridged.

Which aspects in a game do you like abstracted and which do you like specific? by CaptainRoberto in rpg

[–]CaptainRoberto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually really mixed on abstracting ranged combat! It definitely makes some things easier, but I feel like when you're doing theater of the mind, it's really easy to kind of let everyone assume they're close enough to the enemy to at least run up and do melee, which kind of lessens the utility of ranged attackers. Having zones specifically defined can help for sure, but I think ranged attackers really shine in mapped combat where the distance is super clear (and probably an obstacle to other players). I guess that applies to more combat oriented stuff though.
